Today is our final study in this series on the gospel of John. We will see the importance of deliberately focussing on Jesus and His words. Our instinct is to follow our own interpretation of Jesus’ life, whereas God wants us to seek an understanding of Jesus from His perspective and worldview. We will explore the value of setting aside our own views.

Usually, the first-born son of a King is born to be King. But imagine a king being born for the main purpose of dying! Of course, I am not speaking of any king but the King of Kings, Jesus Himself. His death and resurrection were the greatest events to take place on earth. There are three great powers in the universe – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. These three work together for the redemption of lost humanity. The lessons this quarter have been from the gospel of John, and have dealt with chapters 1 through 12 (which some call ‘the Book of Signs’). Today begins Chapters 13 through 20 (which some call ‘the Book of Glory’), these chapters focus on the closing scenes in the earthly life of Jesus. Today’s study will specifically focus on ‘The Three Rs’ – Ritual, Revelation and Reassurances.

The great problem that every human culture has had to face is that of death. Benjamin Franklin famously wrote ‘the only things certain in life are death and taxes’. The Gospel of John gives a solution to this deadly problem through the person of Jesus. John describes Jesus not only as the source of life, but the source of eternal life for all who believe in Him.

John’s gospel emphasises both the authority of the scriptures, and the prophesies of the scriptures, in an effort to reveal that Jesus was the Messiah. Despite John’s evidence, many still do not believe that Jesus was the Messiah. This lesson will discuss how Jesus accurately fulfilled prophecy, and how our faith in Jesus is based on solid evidence.

Throughout the Gospel of John we find sentences affirming the divinity of Jesus Christ. Some people say that Jesus Christ was just a good man. C.S. Lewis, however, observed that good men don’t go around claiming to be God. Either Jesus was what He claimed to be, or He was mad! This study will look into John’s gospel, and will discuss a few of those who witnessed the divine nature of Jesus.

During the time Jesus walked the earth, racial prejudice had been alive and well between the Jews and the Samaritans for centuries. It was so entrenched that the two neighbouring populations avoided any physical contact with each other. This is the environment within which Jesus, a Jew, took his public ministry. This study will discuss Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well, along with the testimony of the Samaritans.

The Messiah had been promised since the fall of man in Genesis 3:15. The major and minor prophets foretold His advent. Yet when the Messiah finally arrived, His identity was an issue.
