We have another great episode this week as we are accompanied by Josh Feldman. Josh was awarded a Drug and Alcohol Counseling certificate from the University of the Pacific and has co-facilitated Psychodrama groups. He has been in the addiction treatment field for nearly a decade and during that time has worked as a Chemical Dependency Tech, Medication Tech, Business Development Representative, Admissions Director, Counselor and Program Director/COO/Owner of his own sober companion and in-home treatment company.
Josh joined Hilary and Jason right before the COVID-19 quarantine to tell us his story and how he overcame his struggles. Josh explains how discovering marijuana at a young age took him down a dark road very quickly, leading to his first outpatient program at 14 years old. His "moment of clarity" occurred during another outpatient program in which an older gentleman and his experiences served as a visualization as to what Josh's own life could be, in addition to all the good things that could come of it. Today, after nearly 10 years of sobriety, Josh says that the keys to his success have been his focus on being a good guy on a daily basis and stresses the importance of "remembering the pause" in life.

This week we are joined by longtime magazine publisher, Jim Moorhead. After getting sober in 2007, Jim decided to launch Renew Media to support individuals and families in recovery. Jim has always said, "the most attractive alternative to active addiction is recovery. The other options…not so good." Similar to the Red Songbird Foundation, he believes that by providing people with the resources to get help, they too can realize the blessings of a life in recovery.
In this episode, Jim opens up about his childhood and how some of his experiences may have been contributing factors to his later addictions. He recalls how alcohol made him feel invincible at an early age and how it helped ease some of the social pressures that went along with meeting new people in college. Jim also speaks on his once drug addiction and what was originally a social activity, spiraled into something much more damaging. Jim finally tells Jason and Hilary that his success to maintaining sobriety comes from continuously working in a program and staying connected to friends and mentors.

Paula Geis Partin was raised in Central California in a home full of alcoholism and abuse. At 14 years old, she took her first drink which began her drug and alcohol addiction. Although she spent many years in state institutions trying to recover from her troubled childhood, her healing didn't begin until she opened up about surviving the sexual and physical abuse she endured. Paula now sees her dark past as her greatest asset and uses her experiences to help others. She has just celebrated forty years of being clean and sober!
This week, Hilary gives us a little insight into some of the struggles she is currently going through and sits down with Paula to hear her story. Paula explains that for so long she was letting what others had done to her affect her daily life. She finally came to the realization that these feelings were something she could change and control. She discusses how the birth of one of her children provided an epiphany and that even though you can try to parent the heck out of your children, things may still take a dark turn. Paula finally discusses her own style of meditation that has been extremely helpful and how she is currently helping young children who are also immersed in difficult circumstances.

This week, we are enlightened by the wise words of Polly Pistole, a sober woman with over 40 years of recovery. She has previously worked in the addiction field for over 15 years and today works with hundreds of women stricken with addictions around the world. Polly is very excited about the Red Songbird Foundation, as she believes that it is a way to save many lives who are traumatized from abuse and addiction.
Polly gives insight into her day-to-day life that has kept her sober for over 40 years. She discusses why the ego involved with the disease of addiction can be a fatal flaw on the road to recovery. Also, Polly profoundly explains why alcoholism has been the greatest gift in her life, rather than a curse. With so many years of knowledge and insight, it's a "drop the mic" kind of episode!
