February 21, 2022Daily Morning Note | February 21, 2022Singapore shares closed lower on Friday (Feb 18), amid mixed trading in regional markets as investors continued to keep an eye on geopolitical tensions in Ukraine. The Straits Times Index (STI) fell 0.4 per cent or 12.67 points to close at 3,428.90. The market barometer was little changed over the week, down just 0.05 points. Across the broader market, gainers outnumbered losers 259 to 226 after 1.3 billion securities worth S$1.2 billion changed hands.The ongoing standoff between Russia and Ukraine as well solidifying expectations of a Federal Reserve rate increase next month, sent US stock indices closing lower on Friday. Wall Street also is bracing for the Federal Reserve to launch a series of increases in the benchmark lending rate. The benchmark Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.7 per cent lower at 34,079.18, and the broad-based S&P 500 also fell 0.7 per cent to 4,348.87. February 04, 2022Daily Morning Note | February 4, 2022Major U.S. stock indexes tumbled Thursday as technology and social-media companies weighed, including Facebook owner Meta Platforms.Nasdaq Composite Index fell by 538.73 points, or 3.7%, to 13878.82, breaking a four-day winning streak.The S&P 500 fell 111.94, or 2.4%, to 4477.44. It was the largest percentage drop in nearly a year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 518.17, or 1.5%, to 35111.16.In a bid to tackle decades-high inflation, the Bank of England lifted its main interest rate for a second time in a row on Thursday. Inflation in Britain will peak at 7.25 per cent in April, compared to 5.4 per cent last December, which was already near a 30-year high. Interest rates were slashed dramatically in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic. Policymakers were divided however on the size of the increase. Governor Andrew Bailey was among the majority of five members to vote for 0.5 percent, while the remaining four wanted 0.75 percent. ECB will also meet on Thursday and is expected to maintain its key interest rates.
