    Summary:

Phaedo, also known to ancient readers as On the Soul, is one of the best-known dialogues of Plato's middle period, along with the Republic and the Symposium. The Phaedo, which depicts the death of Socrates, is also Plato's fourth and last dialogue to detail the philosopher's final day. In the dialogue, Socrates discusses the nature of the afterlife on his last day before being executed by drinking hemlock. Socrates has been imprisoned and sentenced to death by an Athenian jury for not believing in the gods of the state and for corrupting the youth of the city. The dialogue is told from the perspective of one of Socrates' students, Phaedo of Elis, who has been present at Socrates' death bed. By engaging in dialectic with a group of Socrates' friends, Socrates explores various arguments for the soul's immortality in order to show that there is an afterlife in which the soul will dwell following death. After the discussion Phaedo and the others were there to witness the death of Socrates. Artist Bio Author: Plato (428-348 BC) was a philosopher in Classical Greece. Along with his mentor, Socrates, and his student, Aristotle, Plato helped to lay the foundations of Western philosophy and science.

    Summary:

Many of the tales collected in Mosses from an Old Manse are allegories and, typical of Hawthorne, focus on the negative side of human nature. Hawthorne's friend Herman Melville noted this aspect in his review about Hawthorne and His Mosses: 'This black conceit pervades him through and through. You may be witched by his sunlight, transported by the bright gildings in the skies he builds over you; but there is the blackness of darkness beyond; and even his bright gildings but fringe and play upon the edges of thunder-clouds.' William Henry Channing noted in his review of the collection, that its author 'had been baptized in the deep waters of Tragedy', and his work was dark with only brief moments of 'serene brightness' which was never brighter than 'dusky twilight'.

He finds himself in the same location (Boston, Massachusetts), but in a totally changed world: it is the year 2000 and, while he was sleeping, the United States has been transformed into a socialist utopia. The remainder of the book outlines Bellamy's thoughts about improving the future. Summary:

In Socialism: Utopian and Scientific (1883) Friedrich Engels explains that Marxism is scientific socialism. Engels claims that whereas utopian socialism is idealist, reflects the personal opinions of the authors and claims that society can be adapted based on these opinions, scientific socialism derives itself from reality. It focuses on the materialist conception of history, which is based on an analysis over history, and concludes that communism naturally follows capitalism. Engels begins the book by chronicling the thought of utopian socialists, starting with Saint-Simon. He then proceeds to Fourier and Robert Owen. In Chapter Two, he summarizes dialectics, and then chronicles the thought from the ancient Greeks to Hegel. Chapter Three summarizes dialectics in relation to economic and social struggles, essentially echoing the words of Marx. Artist Bio Author: Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) was a German philosopher, social scientist, journalist and businessman. He founded Marxist theory together with Karl Marx.

'Popularity is the most fearful of all tests.'

'The clergyman who is able to trudge bravely through the years, filling the months with quiet honest work, pressing himself close upon his people and holding his people and himself close to the heart of Christ may cause little stir in the world but he will make an impression which will be felt in heaven.'

'Envy is a sin of weakness, and whoever is guilty of it confesses his inferiority.'

Excerpt from the book: 'Well, when I had been dead about thirty years I begun to get a little anxious. Mind you, had been whizzing through space all that time, like a comet. Like a comet! Why, Peters, I laid over the lot of them! Of course there wasn't any of them going my way, as a steady thing, you know, because they travel in a long circle like the loop of a lasso, whereas I was pointed as straight as a dart for the Hereafter; but I happened on one every now and then that was going my way for an hour or so, and then we had a bit of a brush together. An ordinary comet don't make more than about 200,000 miles a minute. Of course when I came across one of that sortlike Encke's and Halley's comets, for instanceit wasn't anything but just a flash and a vanish, you see. But after I got outside of our astronomical system, I used to flush a comet occasionally.' Artist Bio Author: Mark Twain (1835-1910) was an American writer, entrepreneur, publisher and lecturer.
