    Summary:

    Atlantis will fall...

Keep your head down. Follow orders. The mission is paramount.

As a psychic warrior in the elite Order of Amazons, Peri is tasked with protecting the last vestiges of her people on the sanctuary planet of Atlantis, no matter the cost. For over a thousand years, she has enjoyed relative immortality, cycling into a freshly cloned body when the old breaks down. But corruption has taken root at the core of the settlement, and cracks are forming in the peaceful facade. Peri is no longer convinced that the mission she has devoted lifetimes to is still worth her loyalty, and she finds herself tempted by the chance of a forbidden romance with the brilliant, devious Hades.

Peri's disillusionment comes to a head when the hostile alien race that destroyed her people's home world, Olympus, threatens to do the same to Atlantis. The time for indecision is at an end. For her people to have any chance at a future, she must go against centuries of training and work with Hades to destroy the very thing she swore to protect. Time is running out, and the odds are stacked against her. Whether Peri fails or succeeds, one thing is certain: Atlantis will fall.

But the end is only the beginning...

  • Journal of the Plague Year Audiobook by Daniel Defoe

    ID: 500386

Title: Journal of the Plague Year

    Author: Daniel Defoe

    Narrator: Shea Taylor

    Format: Unabridged

    Length: 10:09:59

    Language: English

    Release date: 11-17-20

    Publisher: Findaway Voices

    Genres: History, Europe

    Summary:

Another plague year would reconcile all these differences; a close conversing with death, or with diseases that threaten death, would scum off the gall from our tempers, remove the animosities among us, and bring us to see with differing eyes than those which we looked on things with before.

In 1665, London was struck by the bubonic plague, an epidemic that was the last major instance of the bubonic plague in England. This instance of the plague killed 100,000 people over a year and a half, and was transmitted through rats that ran through the city.

A Journal of the Plague Year was presented as an eyewitness account of the epidemic through the eyes of Londoners, though Daniel DeFoe was only a child during the plague. This book was likely based on the journals and writings of his uncle, but is written with factual specificity and authority that place it among other contemporary accounts of the year. Whether it should be called fiction or nonfiction has been widely debated due to its astonishing amount of factual details, but its ultimate fictitious nature of the authorship.

This journal, whether considered fact or fiction, remains relevant centuries later in a world experiencing similar events and casualties. The words within the journal echo the same sentiments as those experiencing the modern pandemic have felt and expressed. Delving into the observations of the past generations gives current readers a sense of shared suffering through the centuries, and may impart retroactive wisdom that is remarkably relevant for current times.

    Summary:

From an Edgar Award-winning author Evocative language, tight plotting, and memorable characters make this historical mystery set in colonial America a standout. Publishers Weekly, starred review

With the aid of the Native American Shaman Conawago, Duncan McCallum has begun to heal from the massacre of his Highland clan by the British. But his new life is shattered when he and Conawago discover a dying Virginian officer nailed to an Indian shrine tree. To their horror, the authorities arrest Conawago and schedule his hanging. As Duncan begins a desperate search for the truth, he finds himself in a maelstrom of deception and violence.

The year is 1760, and while the British army wishes to dismiss the killing as another casualty of its war with France, Duncan discovers a pattern of ritualistic murders related to provincial treaty negotiations and struggles between tribal factions. Ultimately he realizes that to find justice, he must brave the sprawling colonial capital of Philadelphia. There the answers are to be found in a tangle of Quakers, Christian Indians, and a scientist obsessed with the electrical experiments of the celebrated Dr. Franklin. With the tragic resolution in sight, Duncan understands the real mysteries underlying his quest lie in the hearts of natives who, like his Highland Scots, have glimpsed the end of their world approaching.

The pleasures of Eliot Pattisons books, and Eye of the Raven is another smashing example, are threefold: high adventure in perilous landscapes, a hero stubbornly seeking the truth, and the haunting mysteries of ancient cultures. Otto Penzler, editor of The Big Book of Female Detectives

    Summary:

'Whatever is my right as a man is also the right of another; and it becomes my duty to guarantee as well as to possess.

In 1789, the people of France decided to overtake the monarchy of their country in favor of a republic. The French Revolution played out like an echo of the American Revolution of the decade prior, with people rising against their governing bodies.

Like the American Revolution, the French revolution had its dissidents and supporters. Thomas Paine was one such supporter, and Rights of Man was his manifesto in support of people fighting for liberty.

Throughout this books 31 articles, Paine asserts revolutions are a valid way to rise against a government that does not protect the rights of its people. As one of the most revered political writers of the time, his words were impactful to the success and support of the French Revolution, and remain a fascinating exploration of 18th century political theory centuries later.

    Summary:

If American conscience were only half alive, if the American church and clergy were only half christianized, if American moral sensibility were not hardened by a persistent infliction of outrage and crime against colored people, a scream of horror, shame and indignation would rise to Heaven wherever your pamphlet shall be read. Frederick Douglass, to Ida B. Wells-Barnett

In 1892, investigative journalist Ida B. Wells-Barnett published a pamphlet with unflinching and honest descriptions of the cruelties being enacted against Black Americans in the South by their white neighbors. Wellss poignant and raw reporting of the horrors of lynching scandalized many of her readers outside the South, yet the practice continued unimpeded for more than half a century after. Today, Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases is a sobering reminder that American racism and inequality did not simply end with emancipationand that state-sanctioned oppression and violence can take different forms in different eras.

Ida B. Wells-Barnett was born into slavery in Mississippi in 1862, and was freed at the end of the American Civil War in 1865. Orphaned at the age of 16, she moved to Tennessee to become a schoolteacher and provide for her remaining family. She later became the co-owner of and reporter for the Memphis Free Speech and Headlight, a newspaper published on the grounds of a Baptist church and dedicated to social justice. Despite her life being threatened, her office being destroyed by a mob, and her family facing daily harassment, Wells remained an activist for civil and womens rights for her entire life. She was one of the founders of the NAACP, and was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for her reporting on the violence against African Americans. She died in Chicago in 1931.
