    Summary:

In the 1600s, cotton and silk fabrics that bore colorful and exotic printed patterns, known as calico, were flying off the shelves of the East India Companys stores. The rapidly escalating demand for calico had taken a visible toll on the European textile businesses. The trend spread across Europe and North America, and picking cotton was such an arduous task that even when relying almost entirely on slave labor, it was hard to make cotton a profitable industry in North America.

That all changed with Eli Whitneys invention of the cotton gin near the end of the 18th century. Able to more effectively separate the cotton fiber from seeds, Whitneys cotton gin turned the cotton industry into one of the antebellum Souths biggest cash cows, and as a result, the region became even more dependent on slave labor than before. The cotton gin exponentially increased the labor output, which in turn brought an exponential increase in the number of slaves throughout the South, despite the fact the international slave trade was banned in the fledgling United States in the early 19th century. By the dawn of the Civil War, there were over 3 million slaves in the South, and cotton was so crucial to the Southern economy that the Confederacy would try to compel European countries to intervene on their side by refusing to export cotton to them.

The Industrial Revolutions changes also meant mass production was taking hold on both sides of the Atlantic, and Whitneys principle of interchangeable parts was put to good use not only by the inventor himself, but by several other progressive business executives. After inventing the cotton gin, Whitney had won several lawsuits against farmers for non-payment by suing their states, and with an amassed figure of $90,000, he was able to start additional businesses. When war with France seemed like it was looming and the national armory could only produce 1,000 muskets in three years, Whitney intervened.

Title: Peter Skene Ogden: The Controversial Life and Legacy of the Canadian Fur Trader Who Explored the Pacific Northwest

    Author: Charles River Editors

    Narrator: Mandy Mitcheson

    Format: Unabridged

    Length: 1:57:25

    Language: English

    Release date: 10-16-19

    Publisher: Findaway Voices

    Genres: History, North America

    Summary:

The fur industry was by extension the face of every world power pursuing a stake in the West, and the rivalries were ruthless. The Mexican border during this era lay far north of its present position, and the Canadian border was as yet nonexistent, pending the outcome of competing British, American, Russian and Spanish interests. Despite the American outpost established early at the mouth of the Columbia River in what would become Astoria, Britain ruled as the preeminent military power in the region. That authority was evident in the vast Hudsons Bay Company, which imposed its own judicial structure wherever it went, on land or by sea. The Americans responded with rival companies operating out of the Midwest and traveling over Lewis and Clarks original route.

Among the most prodigious and influential personalities to emerge from that protracted battle was Peter Skene Ogden, a Canadian fur trader and explorer. As a zealous member of Canadas North West Fur Company, his vicious campaign against Hudsons Bay Company members marked him as one of the most dangerous personalities on the continent, unpredictable and capable of the lowest tactics for unseating the great British power. So talented was Ogden that when the rivals finally merged in the following decade, he rose to the top echelons of his greatest rivals industry.

During that period, he traveled the continent in several extensive expeditions, and with the solidification of the American-Canadian border, well to the north of what was originally anticipated, it was Ogden the negotiator who held Russia at bay in the Alaskan country. More than any other individual, Ogden spent years shaping the international dynamics of the beaver fur trade, continental in reach, [and in] rapacious competition for wealth, yet no comprehensive biography has been produced for a man who not only served as a central catalyst for a continent, but did so in such a colorful manner.

    Summary:

Necessity forces us all to make uncomfortable choices. The Professor, operating in such a fringe discipline as Paranormology, bore a greater burden than most. Every decision held the potential to bring his work, and the budding field, into disrepute.

Our investigation at Hampton Court taught me that there is more to ghost hunting than simply recording and observing; a proper grasp of politics is just as necessary as the ability to read a thermometer.

This is the third book of the Paranormology series.

As a knight-errant, albeit one still in training, with only a year of service behind him, Lance took his duty seriously. But waking up was also a serious business, and that was why, despite the midmorning light flickering over his face, Lance was still half asleep. His faithful steed stepped up to help him, breathing smelly fumes into his face.

'Blah!' Lance sputtered, trying to clear his tongue of the frothy waft. 'What have you been eating, Percy?'

His pet's pungent wake-up call forced Lance to roll over. When the heat of Percy's breath continued to eat into the shield of his pending sleep, Lance finally gave in to his beast's rude awakening.

'Alright, I'm getting up. Back from me, you fearsome brute.'

The horse was far from intimidated by Lance's waking grogginess; instead, he moved closer to his master, nuzzling him with his wet nose.

'You're lucky you're the runt of your family,' Lance grumbled, sitting up.

    Release date: 10-11-19

    Publisher: Findaway Voices

Genres: Biography & Memoir, History & Culture, Religious & Inspirational, Women

    Summary:

To say Edith Stein lived a remarkable life would be a dramatic understatement. Born in Breslau (then part of Germany) at the end of the 19th century, Edith was raised as an observant Jew, only to turn her back on religion right around the time World War I devastated the continent. In the wake of the war, during which she earned a doctorate and began working as an assistant at the University of Freiburg, she began reading the works of the legendary St. Teresa of Ávila, one of the most influential Catholic saints in history.

As Stein continued to be influenced by St. Teresa, she was baptized as a Catholic in 1922 and began to turn her attention to becoming a nun. When she ultimately decided that would not be her path, she began to teach at a Catholic school in Speyer, a position she held until 1931. As it turned out, that period of time coincided with the rise of the Nazis, with Adolf Hitler working his way up the ranks of the Weimar Republic before taking full power in 1933.

As the Nazis seized the reins in Germany and began implementing antisemitic policies, Steins Jewish background made her a target regardless of her conversion, and she had to quit teaching as a result of not being Aryan enough to qualify for a civil servant position. In the wake of that, she pursued her original dream by joining a Discalced Carmelite monastery in Cologne by the end of 1933, and she took the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Edith and her sister Rosa would remain at Cologne until 1938, when their Jewish background compelled them to flee to a monastery in the Netherlands as antisemitic persecution intensified in Germany. They were two of countless Jews who fled Nazi Germany or attempted to ahead of World War II, but as fate would have it, they didnt get far enough away.

    Summary:

Saint Martin de Porres was born of John de Porres, a Spanish nobleman and Knight of the Order of Alcantara, and a black free woman, Anna Velazquez.

Martins father was not very happy to find his child was black. He did not want to be connected with the child in any way.

As a matter of fact, on the baptismal record there was no mention of the father at all. The Baptismal certificates read only 'Martin, son of an unknown father.' But some years later, he officially acknowledged Martin as being his son. Were not sure if John ever married Anna Velazquez.

If he did, he didnt treat her very well. He spent most of his time in other countries, leaving Anna and the children, Martin and his sister Joan to fend for themselves.

Though Martin was not from a poor background, you would not have known it by the way he and his family lived. They were always at least borderline poverty, and sometimes full-blown poverty.

But none of this had any detrimental effect on Martin. If anything, it gave him an understanding and empathy for his poor brothers and sisters.

From his earliest days, he focused completely on his Lord present in the tabernacle of all the churches of Lima and in helping out the poor. His mother became furious with him in the early days.

She would send Martin shopping for food, entrusting to him the meager pennies the family had, just enough to get some bread and a few necessities to see them through their meals.

Martin inevitably took the money and gave it to the poor.
