How a localisation tour's strategic vision Ignited Cross-Sector Synergy

Last week on February 2nd to 6th, 2025, I participated in one of the most phenomenal impact journeys of my life. For the next few days, I will share my journal as it occurred. And thus we begin.

Our collective anticipation was palpable as I stood under the warm Nairobi morning sun, having painfully left my family behind but now surrounded by a diverse group of eighteen curious, bright, and fascinatingly impact-minded individuals at our meet-up point at The Hub in Karen. In the sunbaked village ofKibera, Kenya, Mary Atieno’s micro-enterprise thrived not on aid but on a $5,000 impact investment. Her organic fertiliser business now employs 30 women, supplying 500 farms. Contrast this with a neighbouring village where a well-intentioned NGO-built water system lies rusting and abandoned when funding dried up. These stories encapsulate Africa’s crossroads: clinging to aid’s fleeting relief or embracing investment’s enduring empowerment.

Meanwhile, in Niger,USAID’s abrupt 2024 funding freeze left 17 maternal health clinics shuttered, reigniting protests. “We marched to the health ministry demanding answers,” says activist Amina Diallo. “Why must our lives depend on foreign whims?”

This tension underscores a pivotal question:

Can Africa transition from aid dependency to a self-sustaining agency?

It took me a while, but I finally got to it. ✍️

I have been in a unique space of introspection over the last few days since the new year. I have a philosophy that has driven me for quite a while: "Africa MUST change the way it tackles Poverty".

On the one hand, I am utterly devastated by the chaos the "USAID freeze" has caused in many lives. On the other hand, it has also provided a clear impetus for why self-reliance for the global south is yesterday's issue!

So I took a moment and took a somewhat deep dive into all the conversations around the chaos. I wrote a simple piece exploring how Africa can break free from aid dependency and embrace a future powered by local innovation and impact investment.
