Omaru is "a native born American whose parents immigrated from Sierra Leone in search of a better life for their children and family. Growing up as a first generation American I have been fortunate to have experienced two distinct and colorful cultures that have molded me to the person I am today. The skills I learned navigating both cultures has allowed me to face challenges with a perspective that unites the two. With these experiences and growing up as an African American male, it became obvious that I didn’t fit into either mold of being “Black” enough or African enough in the respective communities. One thing that was consistent was that I was a Black man to the rest of the world."
