Welcome to this week’s episode of the StephUp Podcast! This episode features special guest, Ben Kraker, as we talk about Toxic Christianity.
Ben is co-host of the Threads Podcast: Life Unfiltered, which is a space for authentic, transparent conversations about faith, mental health and other uncomfortable discussions.
Ben shares his story of growing up in a fundamentalist conservative evangelical environment. He was always told what to believe, so questioning and challenging these beliefs was discouraged. It wasn’t until he served at a non-profit organization in Los Angeles that he started to see a different side of what it meant to be a Christian. This challenged his whole worldview from what he knew as a kid.
Growing up conservative Christian, for both Ben and Steph, Christianity equaled being conversative/Republican. When they met other Christians who were liberals and Democrat people who were Christians, it challenged their idea of what Christianity really meant. And then Trump and the evangelical obsession with him happened which is also a huge reason why many more started to question and deconstruct their faith.
“It’s sad to me that stereotypically when you think of a Christian, the first thing that comes to mind for so many people are the things that we are apparently against. If we truly are Christians, if we really are about the way of Christ, then shouldn’t we be known for that, and not for all this baggage we’ve added to it?”
