In this episode of Let’s Understand the Bible - Esther, Jake and Emma explore the first two chapters of the book of Esther, where we see God’s providence working behind the scenes in a pagan empire. We discuss the key events, including Queen Vashti’s removal, Esther’s rise to the throne, and Mordecai’s critical role in uncovering a plot to save King Ahasuerus. Though God’s name isn’t mentioned in these chapters, His sovereign hand is evident throughout the narrative.
What We Cover:
1. The Banquet of Ahasuerus (Esther 1): How a king’s pride and impulsive decisions set the stage for God’s plan.
2. Esther’s Rise (Esther 2): God positions Esther, a Jewish orphan, as queen in preparation for His redemptive purposes.
3. God’s Providence: A reminder that even in ordinary or flawed human circumstances, God is always at work.
4. Faithfulness in Exile: How Mordecai and Esther navigated life in a foreign land with wisdom and trust in God.
Reflection Questions:
1. How can you see God working in your life, even when His presence isn’t obvious?
2. Are there situations where you, like Esther, need to trust God’s timing and preparation?
3. What can you learn from Mordecai’s faithfulness in seemingly small acts?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for always working behind the scenes, even when I cannot see or understand Your plan. Like Esther, help me trust in Your providence and remember that You place me where I am for a reason. Teach me to act with courage, integrity, and wisdom, knowing You are sovereign over all things. Use my life to fulfill Your purposes, and may I always rest in Your perfect will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
