LFPWLI: How to Stop Fearing Failure with Mental Coach Seth Pepper
In this episode, Mathew and Seth discuss the impact coaches have on athletes, the flow state, and the hidden blessings in panic attacks. Seth shared his struggles with finding an identity outside of being an athlete, and how he overcame extreme panic attacks through repeat exposure therapy. He pointed to examples like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka to show that high-level athletes are now more honest about their mental health. Finally, Seth emphasized the importance of knowing oneself outside of the game and not personalizing results, as they are just data points.
Seth Pepper is a disrupter in the world of sports who grew up in an artistic family. Despite not having an athletic background, his dad was very supportive of his ideas and empowered him to pursue his goals. Seth decided to become an athlete at 14 and chose to pursue swimming. He went on to become the state champ in Oregon, the national champion in college, and a gold medalist internationally. Seth helps people reach their fullest potential by training their minds through visualization and repetition, and he is a proponent of the power of the subconscious mind. Even though Seth didn't end up making it to the Olympics, he learned the valuable lesson that success is not about winning, but about becoming.
