  • Love Connection

The connection between love and spirit is threefold. First, we experience God’s love for us. Second, the spirit enables us to love God; and third, the spirit gives us the ability to love others as Christ loves us.
Romans 5:5-10 While we were in our unholy, pathetic state, God so loved us that He gave His Son to die for us. Much more, we are saved from the wrath to come.
Romans 8:14-17 The generosity, love, mercy, grace, goodness, wisdom, and power of God are very evident with the love empowering gift of holy spirit.
Galatians 5:13-16 If we walk by the spirit, we will not be overcome with the unloving deeds of the flesh.
Philippians 1:12-20 Instead of submitting to the temptations of anger, ingratitude, grumbling about injustice, blaming God or others, or doubting himself, he was thankful that his incarceration had turned out for the greater furtherance of the gospel. He did not take things personally because he did not believe lies about himself.
1Timothy 1:13-16 Love, joy, and peace are the fruit in someone who believes truth and is influenced by the spirit of truth.
Matthew 6:1-4 The motive for service is vital. We should have a godly purpose in all that we do.
1John 4:9-11; 19 Love for others has two important aspects ‒ first, we must have the right heart behind our deeds of service. Second, works or deeds must also accompany the right motives.
1John 3:16-18 Thinking about loving others or only having good intentions is not enough.
    1Corinthians 13:13

  • What's the Solution?

    The problem
Why do bad things happen to good people?
Why do hurricanes, earthquakes, and volcanoes happen?
Why are some struck by lightning or dragged out to sea by sharks?
Why are some children born handicapped and others die young?
Why doesn’t God simply prevent freak accidents from happening?

    Atheism

Stuff happens; there is no reason why

    Pantheism

Pain is an illusion; enlightenment is found through detachment

    Biblical Responses

The devil did it (2 Corinthians 4.4)
Results of the fall (Romans 5.12; 8.22)
    Judgment of God (Genesis 19.13)
All things work together for good (Romans 8.28)
Death is a wakeup call for the living (Ecclesiastes 7.2)
Not enough faith to be healed (Matthew 13.58)
Time and chance overtake us all (Ecclesiastes 9.11)

    Dealing with Suffering

Don’t deny evil (psalms of disorientation, i.e Psalm 88)
God suffers with us; we are not alone (Hosea and Gomer)
God knows what it is like to lose a son! (John 3.16)
    Hope, living hope! (Revelation 21.1-7)

We may not have the answer to why God allows this or that to happen. However, we can provide people with the ultimate solution—the kingdom of God (when God makes everything wrong with the world right).

  • Who's in Charge?

Revelation 15:3-4 – God is King of the nations.
    Isaiah 40:1-14
Who counseled Yahweh? Who is qualified to question what God knows and what He can or cannot do?
    Isaiah 40:15-18
The nations are like a drop in a bucket, regarded as less than nothing and meaningless.
    Isaiah 40:21-25
He reduces rulers to nothing. God is in charge. He is sovereign over all the nations.
    Jeremiah 18:1-10
The potter has the power over the clay.

    The Devil’s Temporary Control

Luke 4:5-6 The devil has been handed dominion over the kingdoms of this world. He gives this to whomever he wants. (I Corinthians 4:4 – “The god of this world;” Ephesians 2:2 – “the prince of the power of the air”) Ephesians 6:12 – spiritual forces are at work behind what we see in the senses realm.
    Job 1:6-12; Daniel 10:10-13, 20-21; I Kings 22:11-23; II Kings 6:13-17

Through God’s wisdom, foreknowledge, and predetermined counsel, not overstepping His own laws or free will choice, working within the boundaries of justice and mercy, God exercises His sovereign rule over the nations and rulers.

    Egypt/Pharaoh – Joseph (Gen 50:19-20); Pharaoh (Rom 9:14-23);

Assyrian Empire – Jonah, the rod of God’s anger (Is 10:5), Sennacherib (Is 37:16-37)

Babylonian Empire – Nebuchadnezzar-God’s servant (Jer 27:6, Dan 5:8, 20-21), Belshazzar –weighed in the balance (Dan 5:17-31)

    Persian Empire – Cyrus (Is 45:1); Daniel 5:28; 8:20; 11:1-2

    Grecian Empire – Daniel 8:21; 11:2-4

Jesus Christ – Crucifixion – wisdom of God (I Cor 2:7-8), ignorance of rulers- (Acts 13:27-29)

Throughout history, God has continued to work His sovereign will. He continues to exercise His sovereignty, and all that He has said about the future will come to pass.

    Rev 17:17, II Thes 2:3-12

Oh, the wisdom of God! Romans 11:33-36

What should be our response? II Peter 3:10-14
