  • Freedom from Fear

2 Timothy 1:7 God has not given us the spirit of fear, cowardice, or timidity.
Genesis 3:7-10 The greatest fear of all is of God. The accuser tempts people to fear God. Because of fear, man hides himself from God.
Romans 8:15-17 The spirit of slavery or bondage causes fear.
Mark 5:2-5, 14-17 The fear of the supernatural causes people to run from our Lord and our God. Many Christians live powerless lives because they are afraid of wrongly applying the manifestations of the spirit.
Exodus 14:10-13 Fear of circumstances, situations, and people tempt people to blame God. Focus on God rather than is vital.
1 Samuel 15:20-24 Saul feared the people, so he disobeyed Yahweh. Many political leaders compromise their integrity to appease the people. Many religious leaders compromise the integrity and accuracy of God’s Word because they fear losing their job, church, or the people.
Galatians 2:11-13 Peter rejected God’s truth because of fear. Fear has ruined more men’s ministries than anything else.
Judges 7:2 and 3 22,000 left because of fear. 300 fearless godly men defeated 135,000.
    2 Timothy 1:7:

    • Power – Acts 2:14; 4:19-220; 2:4; Romans 8:15-17
    • Love – 1 John 4:15-18 love eradicates fear

    • Confident Christianity

Isaiah 32:14-18; 44:2-5; Ezekiel 36:24-28; 37:12-14; Joel 2:26-29 Throughout the Hebrew Bible, we find several prophecies about the outpouring of God’s spirit. Each of them occurs in the Kingdom age.
Acts 1:3-9 Jesus told the disciples they would receive a baptism in the spirit in a few days. They immediately asked him about when the Kingdom would come, since the outpouring of the spirit and the coming of the Kingdom were linked in their thinking.
Acts 2:1-4, 12-18, 32-33 Finally, we come to the day of Pentecost and the moment when the spirit comes down upon God’s people. Peter looks to Joel’s prophecy to interpret what happened. This is when Christianity goes public.
Acts 4:1-22 When Peter stood before the very same leaders who had orchestrated Jesus’ crucifixion, he didn’t blink. He’s filled with the spirit and bold beyond measure.
Acts 8:26-35 Philip dares to approach the treasurer of Ethiopia while he’s on the road in his chariot. Amazingly, the man converts on the spot!
Acts 17:16-34 Paul preaches to the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers at Athens, apparently unintimidated by their intellectual pedigrees.
Acts 25:23-26:9 Even knowing that his fate is on the line, Paul shares his testimony with King Agrippa, challenging him to believe in Jesus.
Acts 29:1ff It’s now your time. Stand up and be a witness who testifies boldly in the power of God’s spirit.

    • Children of God

      John 16:16-24
Jesus spoke of a day coming when his disciples could have Father/son relationship, just as he had.

Who are the children of God?

      Romans 9:1-5
Israelites were the adopted children of God. These were the sons of Abraham
      (Exodus 4:22; Isaiah 63:16; 64:8; Jeremiah 31:8-9).

This adoption was not based on bloodline, but it was based on having faith in the promise

      (Romans 4:1-5; Matthew 3:9; John 8:39-40).

      Children of God by Faith

      Romans 9:6-8
“It is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise…”
      Romans 9:23-26
God promised that a time was coming when those who “were not My people” would be “called sons of the living God.”

Now, in Christ Jesus, all who have faith can be part of God’s family.

Ephesians 1:3-6 He predestined us to the adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself.
Galatians 3:14; 23-29 We are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 4:1-7 We are no longer slaves, but sons, heirs of God.
      Romans 8:14-17
Those who are led by the spirit of God, these are the sons of God. And if children, then heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ!
      Romans 8:18-25
There is more yet to come when we will receive the full redemption of our body. The creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God!
      John 3:1-3
Now we are the sons of God, but there is more yet to come. When he appears we will be like him!!!!

Now we are the sons of God. We are “as he is” in this world. Act like it! Don’t allow the tempter and the accuser to talk you out of your rights as a child of God. Live like a child of God!

      Matthew 5:9; Luke 6:35-36; Ephesians 5:1-2; Matthew 7:7-11

    • Angels and Demons 2

Colossians 2:15 The Old Testament has limited information regarding the devil, demons, and the entire spiritual realm. Jesus was the first to expose them for and also to cast out demons.

Origin Revelation 12:3 This event happened sometime after paradise was created and before the flood. According to Ezekiel 28:11-19, anointed cherub who covers was in Eden and was lifted up with pride and sinned against Yahweh. Based on the context of Scripture and not supposition, the cherub became the serpent while in Eden. His first recorded evil act was against Adam and Eve after which he was cursed by God and his destiny foretold.

Genesis 3:14-15 On your belly you will go all the days of your life.

Destiny Ezekiel 28:16-18 He will be destroyed forever by fire, Revelation 20:10-15; lake of fire Jude 7; Matthew 25:41

Appearance 2 Corinthians 11:14 The devil is symbolized by serpent, goat, and the dragon, but this is not how he presents himself. Many of the famous painters like Luca, Signorelli, Goya, etc. made drawings of him as ugly and monstrous.

Mission He endeavors to disgrace and defame Yahweh by misinforming humanity about Him. He also strives to humiliate, destroy, and kill all people while blaming God for his evil. The devil’s titles reveal his large-scale, systematic scheme against Yahweh and humanity.

Genesis 3:1 Serpents are cunning, crafty, and deadly, more so than any other being.
Matthew 4:3-4 He is the tempter. Everyone is tempted by him.
Revelation 12:9 The deceiver – He deceives the whole world.
Revelation 12:10; Zechariah 3:1 The accuser
James 1:13-15 He will stimulate unholy or evil thoughts that tempt us to sin. He can do this many ways. If we bite the bait, he pulls us in, and then we sin. After the sin, he attacks as the accuser burying us in shame, guilt, and condemnation. With these dark thoughts and feelings, we are ashamed to approach God or Jesus, and we wallow in the darkness. Often then we are tempted to do the same thing again to get rid of the pain the first sin caused. Hence, an unvirtuous cycle begins.
Matthew 8:28-34 Jesus has absolute power over the devil and demons, and he lives in us.
Ephesians 6:10-18 The way we fight the devil is summarized here.
1 Corinthians 10:12-13 God will help.
      2 Peter 2:9
      Luke 6:27-31 Live rightly.
Romans 8:28-39 Have faith in the work of Christ.
Matthew 4 and Luke 4 reveal that Jesus spoke God’s word to the evil one.

    • Heaven's for the Birds

Genesis 1:14-20, 28; Matthew 6:26 “Heaven” refers to the sky, air, or atmosphere.
Isaiah 66:1-2 Heaven is also God’s throne–where He makes plans and rules.
Matthew 6:20; 1 Peter 1:4; Philippians 3:20 Heaven is where our citizenship, treasures, and inheritances are stored with God.
Deuteronomy 10:14; 1 Kings 8:27 Even before Yuri Gagarin punctured the heavens and failed to see God’s throne, the Scriptures recognized God’s “heaven” is actually beyond the sky.
Matthew 5:5; 6:9-11; 19:28-29; 25:31-34 According to Jesus, the destiny of God’s people is not heaven, but living on a renewed earth, which he called the Kingdom of God.
Genesis 3:19; Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10; Psalm 146:3-4; John 5:28-29 In between death and the resurrection on the last day, the dead are unconscious and inactive. Perhaps this is where the epitaph “RIP” originated.

“For I choose to follow not men or men's doctrines, but God and the doctrines by him. For if you have fallen in with some who are called Christians, but who do not admit this, and venture to blaspheme the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; who say there is no resurrection of the dead, and that their souls, when they die, are taken to heaven; do not imagine that they are Christians.” –Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho, chapter 80, trans. George Reith, circa a.d. 165

Ancient religions typically taught that the dead were awake either in a state of reward/punishment or reincarnated into a new body. The Bible stands apart in its teaching that the dead are asleep until Christ returns to resurrect and reign over a renewed world.

Psalm 138:2 God’s attitude toward His word
Psalm 19:7-11 God is perfect, His work is perfect, His way is perfect; therefore, His word is perfect.
Jeremiah 36:1-4 God told Jeremiah what to write, and he dictated to Baruch who wrote it down.
36:16-18 The king heard God’s word and had a devilish response.
36:28 God told him to write it again. The king destroyed the scroll but not the author.
1 Peter 1:23-25 Yahweh’s word endures forever. God has protected His communication (Scriptures) throughout the ages.
Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
2 Timothy 2:15 There are not contradictions for Scripture always fits together.
Matthew 17:2-9; Mark 9:1-9; Luke 9:27-37 Mount of transfiguration
2 Peter 1:16-21 More sure than the vision Peter experienced is the written word of God.
Galatians 1:11 The Scriptures are not the words of men, but the words of God or Jesus.
2 Peter 1:1-5 Everything pertaining to life and godliness is found through knowledge in the Scriptures.
Psalm 119:11, 12, 18, 24, 33-41 God’s and Jesus’ mindset regarding the Scriptures is evident. What should be our attitude and action?

    • The Beginning of the End

John 12:7; Matthew 26:10-13 Anointed for his death
Mark 15:42-46 Entering the court of a Gentile and touching a dead body, Joseph became ceremonially unclean to eat the Passover. It is hard to conceive how difficult a task this was for Joseph.
Luke 23:50-51 Joseph was a member of the Sanhedrin.
John 19:38-42 Nicodemus wrapped his body according to their burial custom.
Matthew 27:62-66 Guards at the tomb
Matthew 28:2-4 This is the only information about his actual resurrection; no one else saw him get up, but many saw him in his resurrected body.
John 20:1-10 The first person to believe that Jesus was raised from the dead
John 20:11-17 Mary Magdalene is the first one to see our Lord in His resurrected body!
Luke 8:3 Mary was delivered from 7 demons.
John 20:18 The disciples did not believe her.
Mark 16:11 They did not believe her.
Luke 24:1-11 The women along with Mary believed, but the disciples did not.
Matthew 28:5-10 These women saw Jesus.
      Matthew 28:11-15 Bribed the guards
Luke 16:31 Raised from the dead
Luke 24:12 Peter goes to the tomb a second time.
      Luke 24:13-33 Two unbelieving disciples
Luke 24:34ff Because he got up, we too will do so. When he returns, his resurrection is the beginning of the end.

The importance that Jesus placed upon the Scriptures is astonishing. Christianity should be founded upon the truth contained in the Scriptures and not on man-made traditions.

    • Life and the Pursuit of Righteousness

Proverbs 21:21 — He who pursues righteousness finds life, righteousness, and honor.

      How would you define righteousness?

Doing the right thing; easy as A-B-C… or is it?

Paul wrote in Romans 7:15, 19, 23-24 – New Living Translation

15 – I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.
19 – I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.
23-24 – But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?

Who can relate to Paul’s struggle? Where do you struggle?

      Pain of Same

What will happen if you don’t change?

      Pain of Change

What will you gain if you do change?

      Pain Relievers

What Scriptures can you apply, as an antidote, to live righteously?

      Pain of Same

Choosing unrighteousness. How would you define it?

Some answers may include — self-righteousness, wickedness. A definition of wickedness — conduct that is out of gross self-centeredness; neither reveres God nor respects man.

Another answer is sin. What does Scripture teach us about sin?

Romans 6:23 – The wages of sin is… DEATH!

      Pain of Change

      Deuteronomy 30:19 — Choose LIFE!

      Pain Relievers

Ephesian 6:11-17 — Put on the armor of God! Roar into battle; you are a child of the most high God!

      Pursuit of Righteousness Challenge

      1. What prevents you from pursuing righteousness?
      2. What encourages you to seek righteousness?
      3. What Scriptures can we apply to encourage ourselves and each other to pursue righteousness?

What would it mean if we didn’t struggle?

Romans 7:25 – New Living Translation

25 — Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ, our Lord…

Be relentless in your pursuit of living righteously in the light of the Kingdom to come!
