The currently popular story of the Ukraine among the mainstream Ukrainian liberal nationalists is that Ukraine is the original Kievan Rus civilized empire, whereas Russia is a cheap copy of it. This story has some consistency issues, but who would like to be the empire anyway, if you may be a freebooter Cossack, roaming freely in wild steppe? And Cossack communities were essentially maroons, deserters of serfdom in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Muscovy.

Thousands of Russians have been fighting against the invasion to Ukraine. During first month of protests against the war, 15 000 people were detained. Small street actions are still sporadically taking place, although they are heavily persecuted. More than 300 people have been imprisoned for anti-war activities, including six anarchists and antifascists. What are the current anti-war initiatives in Russia tofollow? How to support Russian anti-war movement, which is operating in more and more repressive circumstances? Why Russian anti-war movement has this far failed to change the course of war? Who are the current anarchist and anti-fascists prisoners in Russia, and how to support them?

A presentation for the Bristol Anarchist Bookfair, 1 November 2025, by Antti Rautiainen. The presentation was also delivered at the London Anarchist Bookfair on 20 Septemberand at the Cowley Club in Bristol on 21 September 2025.

The presentation largely follows the one given in Agrinio and three other Greek cities in June 2025 (https://avtonom.org/en/author_columns/anarchist-and-anti-fascist-prisoners-russia-anarhikoi-kai-antifasistes-stis-rosikes),
but is more concise, as no translation was required. Compared to the June presentation, the case of Kirill Bobrov has beenadded.

Kirill Bobrov was suspected of involvement in the insurrectionary anarchist organisation RevolutionaryAssociation of Free People in 2011–2012. The group claimed responsibility for arson attacks against government buildings and the ruling party in Ufa. Kirill managed to escape and was granted asylum in Austria, but later returned to Russia while suffering from serious mental health problems. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2024; however, the anarchist movement only became aware of his case in 2025.

In spring of 2023, after center-left government of Sanna Marin was defeated in Finnish elections, leader of neoliberal National Coalition party invited right-wing populist Perussuomalaiset (Finns, literal translation Basic Finns) -party to form the most right-wing government in Finland since 1920’s. Since then, multiple protest movements have arisen in Finland, against austerity, anti-immigrant and anti-labor measures of the government, and revealed racist messages and cooperation of right-wing populist with Nazis. Labour unions declared wave of strikes, including halting of most Finnish foreign trade for 1 month in spring of 2024.

However, this far protest movements have gained only minor victories. How history of the right-wing populism in Finland explains its relatively easy access to positions of power? What are lessons of the 2023-2024 protest movement in Finland for movements in other countries, struggling against rise of the right-wing populism and far right?

Since year 2017, Russian special service FSB has moved to destroy the anarchist and anti-fascist movements by opening ”anti-terrorist” criminal cases, and torturing victims to confessions. Repressions gained momentum after Russian invasion against Ukraine in 2022, number of anarchists affinity groups and individuals have been arrested andsentenced to long prison sentences due to planning and executing anti-war sabotage, and spreading anti-war message. What can be done to support anarchist prisoners in Russia now?

Antti Rautiainen lived in Russia 1999-2012, until he was deported, accused of ”endangering security of Russian federation”. In Russia, he was participating to anarchist initiatives to support prisoners, and other activities, and he has been involved in solidarity work also after his deportation

Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

On April 19, Dmitry Petrov, a Russian anarchist fighting on the side of Ukraine, died in battle near Bakhmut.

For almost twenty years, Dima contributed immensely to the anarchist movement in Russia and Ukraine. Dima was, first and foremost, a person of action, not a theoretician. Although, a rather interesting synthesis of ideas was also observable in his practice that deserves broad discussion within the anarchist movement and will now need to be further developed without him.

I began to write this text immediately after Dima’s death was confirmed, but the text dragged on, and in the meantime, a lot had already been said. Therefore, I will concentrate on those aspects of Dima’s activities that have been written about less so far, namely his student activism and other (semi-)open projects in Moscow in the 2000s, his religious views, and the first stages of his underground activities.

Last September, some Italian anarchists published a collective letter criticising Ukrainian anarchists for defending themselves and their movement against Russian imperialist aggression.
