In the evening of that first day of the week, Jesus appeared to His apostles. They were gripped with fear at His sudden appearance, so Jesus asked, -Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts-- By the end of this narrative these disciples had been given their commission to take the gospel to every nation.

Upon arriving at their destination and recognizing the resurrected Lord Jesus, the two disciples said, -Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us--

The prophets before Jesus' ministry anticipated His suffering and death to bear the sins of His people. And the apostles looked back upon those prophetic writings to answer the question, -Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory--

After hearing His followers' woefully lacking view of Messiah, Jesus taught them from the word of God- -beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.-

On the road to Emmaus, Jesus appeared to two of His followers. One of them reported their sadness at the recent events and lamented about Jesus, -But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel.- What redemption were they hoping for and what did Jesus actually do for His people-

The disciples of Jesus could not believe the testimony of the women that Jesus had risen from the dead. But after visiting the empty tomb, Peter -went away to his home, marveling at what had happened.-

The woeful women came to the tomb of Jesus and were reproved by the angels who said, -Why do you seek the living One among the dead- He is not here, but He has risen.- Such a marvelous truth was hard for the women and the apostles to believe, even though Jesus had told them many times what to expect.

After Jesus died on the cross, the people responded in different ways. The Roman centurion proclaimed, -Certainly this man was innocent.- The people mourned and the women from Galilee watched as Joseph of Arimathea buried the body of Jesus. All of these eyewitnesses could testify that Jesus truly died on the cross.
