February 26, 2020"Paul's First Letter to the Thessalonians — The Typical Church in Thessalonica — Extolled!”
Today we begin our study of Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonian believers. In this letter, we find that there was no occasion for Paul to reprimand this church as there was good reason to do that with other assemblies (such as the church in Philippi). This church, therefore, stands as our example. Indeed, this letter provides us with a three-fold illustration of a church that can even rightfully be called “typical” or, to use a more current word in our language, “normal”. For, in chapter one, the apostle boldly declares that we should live as the Thessalonians did faithfully imitating him, rejoicing by his grace, and then, in constant expectation of his blessed return, living in the light of his coming. What a glorious blessing that would be and how different the church would be if we all did just that.

This is the final teaching on Philippians. We complete our three-part overview of its powerful and so needed teaching with three simple but profound questions: What is the Privilege Behind Paul’s Example? What is the Preeminence of Paul’s Example? What is the Power Behind Paul’s Example? Paul’s suffering was his privilege and it is ours as well he writes here. That gave him his opportunity as our example or type. Finally, the power of his life and testimony was fully demonstrated as the provision of Almighty God for him and for us. We walk a path that may even lead to rewards, prizes, and even crowns — if we run the race set before us with his zeal and for Christ’s eternal glory. May we all long remember these words and be examples for all those around us of God’s abundant grace. Praise God.

February 14, 2020"Paul's Letter to the Philippians — A Thank You Note Never to be Forgotten -- Part 2"
We have now nearly reached the end of our overview of the precious letter to the Philippians. Next time, Lord willing, we will finish our study here with a focus on what it means to “imitate” Paul. Of the Twelve Dimensions of Blessing revealed by Paul in this letter, we have already covered seven of them. Today our focus will be on four more, and then next time, Lord willing, the the last one, imitating Paul as our privilege under grace. Today though we considered our unity in the Body by the spirit, our filling by God and the provisions for reigning in life, our privilege to suffer together with Christ, and finally, our hope of the prize of his high calling, or, as Paul called in in chapter 3 and verse 11, the “out-resurrection”. Now that special blessing (not all will attain unto it) is reserved for those that run the race Paul ran. Oh, may we run that race and gain unto that prize as the apostle was so hopeful he would. Amen.

February 06, 2020"Paul's Letter to the Philippians — A Thank You Note Never to be Forgotten”
At the very beginning of Paul’s letter to the Philippians believers, he writes precious words of introduction, words of thanksgiving that will characterize the entire letter. He finishes the letter with a corresponding section of thanksgiving. The opening statement after the salutation is in verse 3: “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you” and reaches a spiritual height that is astounding in verse 6: “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” With that introduction, the apostle is well-founded in his transitional statement in verse 7: “ye all are partakers of my grace”. That sets the stage for the rest of the letter. Finally, in chapter 4 he concludes in a similar vein in verse 19: “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”. May God be praised indeed for his super-abundant grace. This is truly a “A Thank You Note Never to be Forgotten”. Amen.

January 28, 2020"Paul's Letter to the Philippians — All Our Need Met With His Sufficient Supply”
Today we reach the final verses in Paul’s letter to the Philippians. The apostle has just finished explaining how he has been initiated into trials that involve great losses even to the seeming necessities of life. He had learned to be satisfied however with the Lord’s provision. Now, at the end of his letter he powerfully applies the lessons he has learned to the Philippians with this precious promise in verse 19, “my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus”. With this ending, there is nothing else to say except to conclude with a remarkable double salutation in verses 20 and 23. That final verse says it all: “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you all. Amen.” That even members of Caesar’s “household” (verse 22) testify to the same is most memorable. What an encouragement for us in and through every trial!

January 23, 2020"Paul's Letter to the Philippians — True Contentment, Whatever Our Circumstances"
We are nearly at the end of this magnificent letter to the Philippians believers. Now in the final chapter, the apostle exhorts for the final time with a focus on his rejoicing while under house arrest in Rome and suffering great loss there. The major statement here is on his “initiation” into grace and its many out-workings in our lives, even through trials and sufferings. His message is that suffering need is not different from “suffering” abundance therefore with the central verse being verse 12: “I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.” His conclusion is equally important and powerful in verse 13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” The indwelling Christ is Paul’s constant source of power! Or, as Col. 1:27 states it: “Christ in us the hope of glory!” He therefore echoes that truth again here as he nears the end of this letter. May it be so for each of us now and forever.

January 16, 2020"Paul's Letter to the Philippians — The Final Exhortation — Follow Me!"
Having reached the final chapter in this great Pauline letter (a prison letter, by the way), we now find his final exhortations. This section proceeds from Paul exclaiming how the Philippians were “his joy and crown”, to another request (compare with chapter 3, verses 17-21) that they would all “follow” or “imitate” him not only in his doctrine but also in his walk: “Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do”. The rest of this final exhortation is a promise to those who would so imitate him: ”the God of peace shall be with you”. What a powerful way to end this final exhortation. The Lord’s blessing will be abundantly upon all those that follow Paul. Will we do that? That is the question. The “peace of God” is promised in verse 7, now the “God of peace” with his full blessing. Amen.

January 06, 2020"Paul's Letter to the Philippians — The Witness of the Apostle Paul — Enemies of the Cross”
We continue today reaching one of the most important exhortations in this letter. Continuing from the earlier verses that again have focused on the mind-set that is truly heavenly, Paul now addresses the false teachers and their influence among the believers to whom the apostle is writing. His exhortation is perhaps the strongest in his letters and the language used of these dangerous ones uses the words “enemies of the cross” in reference to them. Their influence in the church was apparently great. Paul minces no words saying also that those persons will suffer the consequence of their errors. That is in contrast to those that run the race set before all of us and for whom the glories of God’s grace yet ahead are our sufficient motivation for today. So following or imitating Paul as he imitates Christ is offered as that powerful example for us all.

January 01, 2020"Paul's Letter to the Philippians — The Witness of the Apostle Paul — The Highest Calling of All”
In Philippians 3:11 the apostle reveals his hopeful expectation concerning this coming judgment. This judgment is the judgment for believers, called also in two places the Judgment Seat of Christ (Rom. 14:10 & 2 Cor. 5:10). This is NOT the Great Throne Judgment, of course. Also he writes in the Corinthian letter of how this Judgment will be performed (1 Cor. 3:11-15). So rewards will be given out and every believer will receive praise from God even though all works may be burned having been found to have not been founded truly on Jesus Christ. But what does that really mean? Paul teaches clearly here in Philippians chapter 3 that the issue is always one of motive (Phil. 2:5; 3:16-17) and accordingly one of our works being a response to law of any kind, rather than truly the fruit of faith in our Lord Jesus. Paul is to be our example of this as written here in chapter 3: 13-14 “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but [this] one thing [I do], forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

December 24, 2019"Paul's Letter to the Philippians — The Witness of the Apostle Paul — Risking Everything for the Sake of Christ, Part 2”
Philippians 3:8 declares how Paul had given up everything for the sake of Christ. He had counted “all things [but] loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus [his] Lord: for whom [he] had suffered the loss of all things”. Of course, this followed the great exhortation in chapter 2 verse 5 where he exhorted each of us to have that same mind-set that Christ had in leaving heaven’s glory for this sin-cursed earth with eternal redemption for sinners very much in view. Paul’s example of this same mind-set dominated his life. All followed from that he says here. And, for him therefore, to be “found in him” at the Judgment Seat of Christ with nothing else to recommend him but that which is of the “faith of Jesus Christ”, that was his greatest desire. As he then explains, is to leave behind entirely all works of law. Shining forth at that time, in that special resurrection (the “out”-resurrection), with the reward appropriate, would then be his eternal badge of glory. No dead works to be burned, all endures the judgment fire. All lost here for the sake of that reward then. May it be true for us as well. Amen.
