George Landa returns to our show to discuss his musical career. As a 7th grader he was witness to a surprise performance by his classmate and it led to passion for music. He grew up in Nogales, played clubs in Mexico, snuck to Tucson to hang out the Chicago store and eventually started playing bars in Tucson Like Sharks and The Speakeasy.

George is a preacher, guitar player, signer and writer. He loves the music and loves the lifestyle of a musician. He told his very first band they would do great things and lead great lives, but probably not make much money. He developed his credo- Be good to the music and the music will be good to you- after an access television performance found his music in the hands of midwestern woman bringing her peace and tranquility as she passed on from this world.

He's now introspective about his role in the continuum of music. His band, Los Nawdy Dawgs, makes it a point to play the music of those who shaped them. Artists like Lalo Guerero, who George says was influential in the later years of the band. But they are not an oldies cover band. They play original music and put their own modern influences on the classics.

I met up with George in his secret underground bunker studio in the heart of downtown to learn about his musical journey from Nogales to Tucson.

We start today with a circus coming to town

It's a new decade- or is it? Some say 2020 is the beginning others say 2021 actually starts the new decade. If I have learned one thing from that watching too many movies its that this type of confusion could lead to a Zombie attack or some other type of Armageddon n scenario is inevitable. We're continuing into the unchartered territory of the future with each passing day and dooms day very well may be upon us.

Luckily for us here in Tucson, we have a source of supplies to ward off any such disastrous destiny. Since 1951 Millers Surplus has been serving our community from a downtown location. Over the last 70 years their business model, merchandise options, and customer demographic has changed. But in their current location since 1967, Millers Surplus has remained a constant in a changing urban environment and provided Tucson with a place to go for that specific item they may need for work, play or apocalyptic fighting.

George Landa walked into the store as a customer in 1999 and hasn’t left since. He now manages the retailer on 6th Ave and sat down with us for a look at this Iconic downtown store.

We start today with a yearend celebration.

El Burrito Cowboy, Paquita Vaquita and Amiga Sue set out to save Douglas from a menacing phantom. These characters are the creation of film maker Alfonso Sahagun Casaus and they have been helping to teach children about healthy eating as part of the El Burrito Cowboy Show. Now Casaus has his team on the big screen fighting to save Douglas Arizona from the horrible phantom. Along the way they showcase the beauty, history, culture and architecture so unique to G Ave in Downtown Douglas,.

Casaus first started in film through access Tucson on Broadway in downtown. That led him to a 20 year career as a photojournalist for local news stations.

Speaking to Alfonso, it's easy to see his love for Douglas and his desire to make the world see the beauty which is so obvious to him.

We met up a coffee shop to discuss his 20 year career, his children's show, the movie and his new year resolutions.

Christmas eve 1916 on the corner of Meyer and Simpsons, Eduardo “Lalo” Guerrero was an born. He would grow to become a champion of his Chicano/Mexican culture and recognized worldwide for his singing and prolific song writing.

In his younger years he performed all over Tucson and his talent eventually led him to Los Angeles. Lalo Guerrero was of a generation known as the pachuco period, a time when young Chicanos expressed their growing cultural identity and independence. They flowed right into the zoot suit-influenced clothing, language and music.

We recently sat down with a couple of men who briefly crossed paths with Lalo Guerrero and got their impressions of Lalo's impact.

Ruben Lopez Moreno will be 92 on Christmas. He grew up on Convent St- just a stone's throw from Guerrero's home. He went to school with Lalo's younger brothers and tells of a time when everyone played music and sang-- Lalo just did it better. Senor Moreno was joined in the interview with his son, also named Ruben who has a successful music career with Mariachi Luz de Luna. The younger Moreno has toured with Calexico, helped numerous schools create a mariachi program and been performing throughout Tucson for over 40 years.

We start today with dreams of a busy Christmas

An artist who travels the world, performs internationally, never stays in one city for too long has starting calling Tucson a home. He found what he called "a wealth of black talent in Tucson" and wanted to put on an event to show it off. Hotel McCoy was the venue, Roux Events the organizer, and Tucson the talent pool. The event was called Black Renaissance and the founder Seanloui Dumas quickly found himself at the forefront of a movement in Tucson.

It was supposed to be an event, then a series of events and now the plans include a city wide celebration of the wealth of black talent during Black History month.

I had a chance to sit down recently with Seanloui to get the story of how this artist with a transient lifestyle came to have such an impact on Tucson.

Oscar Mike is a term from military jargon meaning On the Move. It became the motto of a 501c3 foundation which organizes high-energy extreme events for disabled and able bodied individuals alike. We don’t view disabilities as road blocks, but more as challenges to own and overcome. I was introduced to this term a few weeks ago when interviewing Eric Bell, a member of the 2 time National Championship Wheelchair rugby team from the u of a. They won their second championship earlier this year at the event hosted by the Oscar Mike Foundation.

Eric is also the Program Coordinator for Physical Access at the University of Arizona. He is in charge of making sure every student has an equal opportunity to education and is not impacted by limiting access for their specific needs. His team will ensure a student who needs accommodations, let's say for a wheelchair, has those needs met before the first day of class. When that individual shows up to her first session, there is already a desk in that room able to accommodate her wheel chair. It seems simple but the UofA is a leader in ensuring seamless education with a universal experience.
