Publisher's Summary:
The dilemma of how and whether defective newborns are treated is hardly new; Plato and Aristotle both addressed the subject. But the moral questions about treatment are continually being recast by advances in medical knowledge and technology. Since neonatology is such a new field, there is often more than one way to proceed, even in such relatively noncontroversial areas as prescribing medications. And with such tiny, voiceless patients, the uncertainty of medical prognosis is acutely felt.
In "Life and Death in the Nursery", Anita Diamant, the New York Times best-selling author of The Red Tent and The Boston Girl, tells the powerful, heartbreaking story of Carol and Phil Powers, whose son Whit was born with a life-threatening congenital disorder, and the doctors and nurses who try to save him and thousands of newborns every year. As right-to-life fervor swept the country in the wake of the 1982 Baby Doe case, Diamant takes listeners inside Boston's Children Hospital at the height of the debate over infant care.
"Life and Death in the Nursery" was originally published in New England Monthly, July 1985.
Members Reviews:
Not a book
This is an article, not a book, and a short one, too. Interesting though. I've Often thought when reading stories about the extreme measures taken to save these poor sick babies if this was in the best interest for the child. There seems to be so much suffering involved with all these procedures with a very uncertain outcome.
Thought provoking
Great read about the dilemma of parents facing heart wrenching decisions. Don't think anyone should judge until they've been personally faced with such a decision.
Great insight on what defines life
This presents valid and affirming points regarding what motivates end of life decision's in healthcare. Beyond infants, I think the concepts of ethics and true intent of termination also apply to elder care and assisted suicide. This was a refreshing and non aggressive perspective if one families process and approach to this difficult situation.
Article from 1980's Still relevant today
Article from the 80's about neonatal care. Thought provoking and informing, and I believe, still relevant.
Heartbreaking
Good book and sad at the same time. It ended in a happy note though. Don't understand why babies are not happy and healthy but know it's not to be.
