One of Africa’s pioneering modern artists, Mulatu Astatke is considered the ‘father of Ethio-jazz’, the multi-instrumentalist skillfully fusing African, American and European rhythms.
After writing music for and performing with Duke Ellington, he set Ethiopia’s modern golden age of music into motion in the 1970s, with his music now having been sampled by Nas, Damian Marley, Kanye West and Nicolas Jaar, among others.
Sally Mousa spoke to Mulatu before he took to the stage with his band for an electrifying concert at the opening of the Africa Hall in Sharjah.
