The emirate of Sharjah wrapped up its cultural festivities celebrating its prestigious recognition as the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2019–2020 on 22nd April, handing over the title to the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.
The online closing ceremony marking this momentous year for Sharjah was broadcast live on local, Arab, and international television stations and social media platforms, attended by a large audience of officials, as well as writers, intellectuals, and artists from around the world, as well as many watching globally from the comfort of their own homes.
In her speech, Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Head of the Advisory Committee of Sharjah World Book Capital 2019, highlighted the significance of the theme "Open Books, Open Minds", as well as the power of books to bring us together, especially in the most difficult of times.
