She was DETERMINED to not let Broca's aphasia slow her down. Recovery after a stroke and aphasia never stops.
Get your starting point: https://findaphasiasupport.com
If you think you're done — you're not. Nine years in, Michelle is still proving that recovery doesn't end when you think it does.
You've been here a while. Maybe a year, maybe longer. And somewhere along the way you accepted it: this is the recovery. This is as good as it gets. The gains have stopped. You're managing now, not improving.
That's the story you're telling yourself. I want to tell you a different one.
Nine years ago, Michelle Clemens was a news anchor and reporter. She was living the professional life she'd built. Then she had a brain bleed. Three surgeries. 1% odds. Aphasia. Apraxia. And somewhere around year one, like everyone else, she probably thought recovery had a finish line and she'd found it.
But she didn't stop. She took a three-week cruise when she could barely speak. She went back to school. She wrote a book. She became a trainer, a speaker, a documentary producer. Nine years in, she's still working. Still improving. Still living a life that proves something nobody tells you: recovery doesn't have an endpoint.
Not if you don't want it to.
Her dad Vince is here too, sharing what it looks like to support someone who keeps deciding to rebuild. Together they wrote a book called "Determined" about her first year of recovery. But Michelle lived eight more years beyond it.

You used to talk to anyone. The cashier. The neighbor. The guy at Home Depot. Now you sit in the car with your aphasia and let your wife go instead.
Want to get back to being "the guy?" Take your first action: https://aphasiastrengthscompass.com
In this episode I talk about Jerry. Four years post-stroke. His world had gotten tiny. He didn't see his own responsibility in getting back to himself. He felt that traditional rehabilitation and speech therapy didn't fully preparing him for real-world challenges.
Three things came out of that conversation.
- His world shrank because shame was driving it, not aphasia recovery.
- The people around him pulled back because they were following his lead.
- And his voice had literally gotten softer over four years because he had decided he was less worth hearing.
Once he saw those three things, everything changed. I walk you through what we did next. You can start this week.
Your first action this Aphasia Action Month is the Aphasia Strengths Compass. It shows you exactly where you stand in your communication right now and what to build on first.

You deserve a LIFE Beyond Aphasia
In this episode, we discuss the challenges of medical appointments when a loved one has aphasia and faces barriers to communication.
Despite advocating for patient rights, the doctor often bypasses the disabled person, creating frustration and highlighting the need for better patient communication.
We can help you advocate. Start here: https://aphasiacarepartnercompass.com
She'd done everything right. Called ahead. Asked the nurse to make sure the doctor addressed her husband directly. The doctor never once looked at him. She redirected him three times.
And on the drive home, hands shaking on the wheel, she came within a foot of hitting the car in front of her.In this episode, Genevieve talks about what white-knuckling caregiving actually costs you. Not just emotionally—the near-misses on the highway, the medication errors when you haven't slept, the things you say and can't take back.
She walks you through what it looks like to loosen your grip, even just a little, and why one person helping this week could change everything.

You are the plan. You have been your aphasia spouse's only backup since his stroke.
But what happens when the caregiver needs help?
Build your plan. Start with here: aphasiacarepartnercompass.com
You have been managing everything. The medications, the appointments, the daily routine, the communication breakdowns.
Nobody told you to build an aphasia care partner backup plan for yourself. So you haven't. And when the doctor calls with a cancellation you cannot put off, there are no names on a list, no written routine, nobody who knows what to do.
If you have ever thought about leaving your spouse with aphasia alone and felt your chest tighten, this is the episode.
We talk about why aphasia caregivers have no support system in place for themselves, what an aphasia spouse emergency plan actually needs to include, and how to get help as a stroke caregiver starting this week with one conversation.
Because caregiver burnout is not the only risk. Luck runs out. And the phone will ring.

Have you been so busy protecting him that you accidentally took away his role in the household? We talk about what happens when you over-function for someone with aphasia. You are frustrated. In all the time you have worked on speech therapy in your recovery journey, you still don't feel like yourself.
You hate that you can't express yourself or interact with others the way you want to.
Start rebuilding now: https://findaphasiasupport.com
We built a tool that helps you start seeing communication in nine areas: at home, at work, out in the world where you have more strengths than you realize.
This is what the Aphasia Strengths Compass does. It maps where you're stronger than you think and where your energy matters most.
This isn't about therapy exercises. It's about getting back to being the person you are.
Sit down with your spouse. Take the compass together and start talking about where you are and where you want to go. When you're done, let's jump on a connection call and talk about what you found.
You can rebuild your life after Aphasia.
@LIFEBeyondAphasia
You don't have an emergency preparedness plan, and that's keeping you trapped.
If your mom falls, your sister calls, or you need 72 hours away, you can't leave because nobody else knows his routine like you do.
Care Partner Compass. Want to rebuild your marriage? Start here. aphasiacarepartnercompass.com

Who you call first. What medications and routines he needs documented. How to ask for help without guilt or shame.
You'll learn why paying for backup care isn't failure and how to identify people in your circle who can step in.
Start this week. Write down one name of someone who would say yes.
That's where emergency preparedness becomes possible, and you become his wife again.
