The primary risk factors for postpartum depression include previous depression, anxiety and/or mood disorders. Other risk factors include low social support, stress during pregnancy (including emotional, financial, partner-related or traumatic stress), traumatic birth experience, tobacco use during pregnancy, and not breastfeeding, early cessation of breastfeeding or negative early breastfeeding experiences.

The prevalence of postpartum depression is higher among:

  • American Indian/Alaska Natives and Asian/Pacific Islanders than non-Hispanic white women.
  • Mothers who are younger than 24 years old than older mothers.
  • Mothers with lower educational attainment than those with higher education attainment.
  • Mothers who are unmarried than those who are married.
  • Mothers who smoked during the postpartum period than those who did not smoke.
  • Mothers who gave birth to low birthweight infants and infants requiring NICU admission than those who did not.
  • Mothers who had three or more stressful life events in the year before birth than those who did not.
