Worldwide about 10-20% of children and youth experience mental disorders. However, it is often difficult to determine the causes behind the child mental health conditions, disorders and diseases. Research shows that several barriers, such as a diminished civil society support, a lack of global consensus on mental illness and its treatment, missed policy opportunities and limited evidence on the delivery of mental health interventions, are blocking improving mental health. Neuropsychiatric conditions are often the leading cause of disability in young people in all regions. If untreated, these conditions severely influence children’s development, their educational attainments and their potential to live fulfilling and productive lives. This is an observation by Professor Jace Pillay, the South African Research Chair in Education and Care in Childhood at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

Storyteller supreme, Gcina Mhlophe, wants to leave behind a very special legacy as she turns 61: She wants her birthday, October 24, to become National Storytelling Day.

With the support of storytellers — both local and international — who have pledged to tell stories on that day, Mhlophe hopes that her birthday will be the storytelling catalyst across the land from schools and villages to rural and urban areas. But, she’s not looking to government to cement this day into the general public’s holiday calendar. She wants the germ of her idea to grow, organically, until it has caught root across the land, and reading and storytelling have become as much a part of the public landscape as breathing.

Sam Nhlengethwa was born in the mining community of Payneville Springs in 1955 and grew up in Ratanda location in Heidelberg, east of Johannesburg. He completed a two-year Fine Art Diploma at the Rorkes Drift Art Centre in the late 1970s. While he exhibited extensively both locally and abroad during the 1980s and ’90s, Nhlengethwa’s travelling solo show South Africa, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow in 1993 established him at the vanguard of critical consciousness in South Africa and he went on to win the Standard Bank Young Artist Award in 1994.

The Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga urged schools to set aside 30 minutes for reading for enjoyment every day and called on parents to support their children in practicing their reading skills each day. She further pressed businesses to adopt and sponsor reading resources for schools.Motshekga, along with various social partners, made the calls at the launch of the National Reading Coalition (NRC) in Benoni, Ekurhuleni.

A hundred and twenty years ago, seven thousand Zulu mineworkers walked from the gold mines in Johannesburg to Natal, covering a distance of five hundred kilometres over ten days. This journey was their longest march. It is 1899 and Philippa’s fiancé Nduku has just broken off their engagement. Author and journalist Fred Khumalo began a long march on Monday to commemorate 7,000 Zulu men, women and children who walked from Johannesburg to Durban during the Anglo-Boer war.

More pupils have been "affected over a number of years" by the alleged "serious misconduct" of a female former Bishops Diocesan College teacher, the school says.
"We have confirmed that there have been several boys who have been affected over a number of years," school principal Guy Pearson said in a statement on Tuesday.
This follows the resignation of the female teacher who allegedly had a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old matric pupil.
The allegations have rocked the prestigious private Cape Town boys' school in Rondebosch after the Sunday Times reported that the pupil had also tried to break off the relationship.

Adelaide Frances Tambo (nee Tshukudu) was born on 18 July 1929 in Top Location, Vereeniging, in the Vaal Triangle. Tambo attended the St Thomas Practising School in Johannesburg and Orlando High. She worked as a nurse at the Pretoria General Hospital and at an old people's home in London.

Adelaide Tambo’s political life started at the age of 10 after a raid by the police, following a riot in Top Location, Vereeniging. A police officer had been killed, and Adelaide's ailing grandfather, aged 82, was among those who were arrested and taken to the town square. There the old man collapsed and Adelaide had to sit with him until he regained consciousness.
