Jonathan Jansen, rector at the University of the Free State, in an article for the Mail and Guardian newspaper strongly stated that, "If our children are to stand tall, they must master the language used to exclude them." This was him highlighting that English is the language of choice in schools because indigenous languages are poorly taught. Today we look at the importance of teaching children their home language as early as possible and embracing our home languages.

Royal Kids NPO partners with Marriott International, parent company of Protea Hotels by Marriott. A Cape Town woman called Danolene Johanessen has for a long time been involved in initiatives to improve the lives of young people living in impoverished communities. In 2012 she decided to do something to assist children whose families do not have the funds needed to purchase good school uniforms. These children often feel embarrassed about their situation, and are sometimes bullied by more affluent children. In addition, many of the children are HIV positive and some are the orphans of parents who died because of AIDS.

Veteran jazz musician Dorothy Masuka passed away over the weekend. Mam’s Dorothy was 83 years old and before her passing, she had been suffering from complications related to hypertension after suffering a mild stroke last year. One of her last stage performances was at mam’Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's funeral last year. On social media, tributes have been pouring in for Mam’Masuka.
