Nicole is responsible for ensuring that the 13,000 residents of long-term care in her community have access to the highest level of care, respect, and above all, can live free of abuse and neglect. Before her role with OSCCS, Nicole worked for nearly five years as the Director of Operations for Ombudsman Services of San Mateo County, where she became a fierce advocate for seniors and dependent adults and immersed herself in culture change initiatives and person-centered care philosophies. Ms. Howell has worked in the nonprofit community for a decade and attended the University of Nevada, Reno. When she is not working, she can be found at the Oakland Coliseum cheering on the Oakland A's and hoping for a World Series Championship.

In this episode, Host, Micheal Pope, is going to talk about the celebration of Independence Day in the middle of a pandemic. As the state sees a high increase in COVID-19 cases, Governor Gavin Newsom warns Californians to follow new health orders ahead of the Fourth of July. People have to understand that the Fourth of July 2020 should be celebrated differently and avoid road trips to state parks and beaches. Big gatherings are the environments in which COVID-19 spreads.

Coronavirus infections throughout the Bay Area grew to 26,300 on Wednesday, an increase of more than 677 cases in 24 hours, county data showed. Single-day spikes in Bay Area counties included 202 new cases in Santa Clara, 192 in Alameda, and 116 in Contra Costa. In California, Newsom’s order requires restaurants, wineries, tasting rooms, family entertainment centers, movie theaters, museums, zoos, and cardrooms in the 19 counties to halt indoor operations for at least three weeks. The affected establishments are allowed to operate outdoors, such as restaurant patios.

Maryanne is a Social Worker at ASEB (Alzheimer's Services of the East Bay), and Carla works as a Program Director/Music Therapist at ASEB. 


Maryanne specializes in working with people living with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia, their families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. She is personally familiar with vascular dementia as her maternal grandmother lived with it for years. This firsthand experience turned into a passion for working with older adults living with dementia and their families. Maryanne graduated in 2019 with a Master's of Social Work from the University of Michigan.

He received his MDiv (Master of Divinity) with honors from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, and has also done graduate studies in Literature and Criticism at the State University of New York at Albany, and in Liberation Theology at Maryknoll School of Theology. Rhodes has served churches in California, New Jersey, New York City and New York State. He has published numerous articles, monographs, and books, including Journey Through the Psalms, Words of Hope and Clarity, Words for a Birthing Church, Pentecost Fire: Preaching Hope in Times of Change and Words to the Silence: A Book of Uncommon Prayer. He also wrote a regular column for Emphasis Preaching Journal for seven years. Shouting Joy to the Storm is his eighth book.

Caregiving takes more hours than the day provides. Our caregivers are warriors of their love for their loved ones living with Alzheimer's and any form of dementia. Tracie Fong is a caregiver, thus an essential worker at ASEB (Alzheimer's Services of the East Bay). Tracie will join Micheal and share her experience as a caregiver during and prior to the pandemic.

Fact: According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are 5.8 million Americans aged 65 or older who are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and more than 16 million Americans provide unpaid care for them. Family members and friends provided nearly $244 billion in unpaid care to people with Alzheimer's and other dementias in 2019. And almost a quarter of Alzheimer's caregivers are in the "sandwich generation," meaning they care for both someones with the disease and their child.
