After Judas had gone out, we see Jesus address his disciples and tell them that he has now been glorified. Jesus, and only Jesus, has handed himself over to the events to come. Jesus provides His disciples a new commandment; one that can only be fully understood by looking at the cross. “...As I have loved you."

Every believer will have failures, and this part of the Gospel story gives us both warning, but also hope. One follower, Judas, walked away from the light and into the night. Another, Peter, acted with bravado, yet cowered in fear. Jesus even told Peter that, despite his boldness, he was only one step away from being cut down by Satan himself. The only thing that keeps Peter's faith alive isn't Peter, but is Christ. God's grace gives us strength to continue as He lovingly restores us even after denial. So long as we love the light (even if imperfectly), we can know that Christ is working in us.

When we read about Jesus washing the feet of His disciples, it's easy to view this through a modern, sterile lens and to minimize the humility this act of service required.  This was not a pleasant job, however, as the sandaled feet of travelers at the time would have been likely covered with all sorts of dirt, grime, animal feces...you name it!  And when we step back and remember that this is not "just" a man washing the dirty feet of his friends...this is the living God, serving his enemies. Those that were soon to betray him, and those that had lived lives contrary to His law...and even us.  In doing so, Jesus models the type of service He expects from His followers.    We may not agree with the viewpoints, behavior or attitudes of those that God brings into our lives, but He calls us to love and serve them, as He has loved and served us, with grace, generosity and sacrifice.  Thankfully His Spirit comes alongside us and provides all that we can't!

Can you imagine what it would be like to take a class where you never quite knew if you were passing until the very end?  How horrible would you feel to get to the end of the semester only to find out that your efforts weren’t good enough and you had failed! In life, however, the Bible is very clear about what God requires and that the “good enough” mark is well beyond what any of us can attain.  Thankfully, there is good news for those of us who have fallen short, and the message of Easter is one of hope.  Not hope that we can get our act together…not hope that we can somehow boost our efforts and make the grade…but hope in Jesus, the Son of God who was Good Enough!  Jesus is our living hope, and in His death and resurrection we can have certainty in our own eternal standing with the Father!

Our souls are often troubled when facing the future, trials, or internal struggles. What can sustain us during these times? What can truly satisfy us and give us sustenance for the next day? Even Jesus' soul was "troubled," and He calls us to walk in His footsteps. But In those footsteps, He gives help: "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me." When we are at out wit's end, we cast ourselves upon what we know to be true, and as we resolve to have God's will be our food, our souls will be sustained, even if still troubled.

Have you ever felt disappointed by God, or felt as if He let you down or didn't do things how you think they should have been done? Maybe you've felt lost and confused, angry or bitter, or just haven't understood why He is allowing certain things to happen in your life. We can know that we are not alone in this, and though God may at the time seem like He is failing or absent, we can have a confident hope and anticipation that all of our trials, sufferings, and struggles will ultimately bow to Him and His purposes in our life.

What does a reasonable response to God look like? Living a good, moral life? Trying our best? Serving others? Though all of these responses may seem reasonable, proportion matters. God has given us everything, and through Jesus He has purchased even our eternal life. The only reasonable response, then, is to give Him everything. However, we often live unconvinced that God has actually forgiven us of much. We either think we're already pretty good and have earned His favor, or we think our sin is too bad (or too current) for Him to totally forgive. And because of that, our response to Him is not full, but it is half-hearted and weak. When we come to realize the truth that God pursues us even in our sin, it changes how we respond to Him.

Jesus came to this earth not just simply to make salvation possible, but to actually save. His mission wasn't to throw the proverbial "Hail Mary" pass in hopes that some of us may catch it. He came to run the ball Himself, securing salvation for those that that His Father gave to Him, and He declared that He will lose none of them, that all those that Father gave Him will come to Him, and He will never cast them out. The power and glory of our salvation is not just simply that it is possible, but that it is actually and truly purchased and secured for us.

God's love was demonstrated by the giving of His Son. We as Christians have been called to lay down our lives for one another and consider the needs of others over our own. In 1 John, John tells we are to love one another and in John 13, Jesus tell us this is how the world will know that we are His disciples by our love for one another. Our testimony to the world of God's love is shown by the great lengths in which we love our brothers and sisters in Christ. As we get to be a part of God's mission, may our love spur others towards the reconciling work of Jesus Christ.
