In super simple layman's terms, when the human body experiences an anitgen the immune system creates antibodies to fight it.  The immune system then remembers that antigen in case it attacks again.  But this time the body is ready to defend against it before it can do anything. 

We often have to first encounter that which is unpleasant in order to develop what is necessary to go to the next level and be prepared for the challenges and unpleasantries of that new level.
