The letter to the church of Pergamum is a perfect reminder that God has established churches to be IN the world but not OF the world. Churches and believers are meant to be set apart, holy, and a shining light in a darkened world. The problem Jesus had with this church was not that they were established "in the place where Satan's throne is," the problem with Pergamum is that they compromised Christ's message to be more acceptable.

As a church body, or even as a single believer, we can begin to feel pressure from the world around us that causes us to wonder, "Are we doing what God has called us to do?" Sometimes churches lose members and the congregation shrinks and the church as a whole asks if they have lost vision. As an individual believer, we lose friendships and feel as though the whole world is mocking our faith in Christ. In this sermon, we learn of a church in the book of Revelation that is experiencing faith-shaking tribulations, but they are given the hope of knowing that God has given them the power to endure and a promise to those who conquer.
