This is Jake Stevens. Jake is a fellow entrepreneur I met at the Rochester Institute of Technology who is destined for great things. Jake recently turned down a salaried $120k a year job at Apple.

Jake’s life story is about learning discipline and learning to better recognize and take advantage of opportunities. Jake talks about his love for video games and his relationships with his siblings as a kid, his struggle with academics in his early school years, how he found a passion for math, how he taught himself to code at RIT, and finding his current path with his start up.

My Great Aunt Jeannine Nolan is the coolest 91 year old woman I’ve ever met. Throughout my childhood, Aunt Jeannine would always take me windsurfing, kayaking, and fishing at her camp on Oneida lake. She’d stay up late playing cards with my sister and me. She was there for every birthday, holiday, and performance from the time I was born to the time I graduated college.

My Aunt Jeannine played a huge role in my mom receiving her master’s degree from SUNY Brockport, and she’s been a guiding force to me and my extended family for many many years. Every time I ever needed anything, she was always there to help.

In this episode, we hear about how she used to fake sick to get out of going to gym class, how her father raised and sold turkeys to finance her college education, how awful living through World War 2 was, how she used to raise hell on Halloween, and how her life choices ultimately contributed to me and my sister to have lives filled with a huge abundance of opportunity.

I can definitively say that without my Aunt Jeannine, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.

Oscar Estrada is the best filmmaker I know, and my best friend. Oscar is the person I call when I have a half-baked idea that I think could be great. Oscar has an action bias. He gets things done, and he doesn’t stop. He’s also a lot of fun at parties.  

I met Oscar at The Rochester Institute of Technology when we were both members of our college improv group Work In Progress. Oscar is originally from Peru and he came to RIT for college. As a member of WIP, Oscar performed live improv comedy without yet being fully fluent in English. Imagine flying to another country and performing a play, with a script you improvise on the fly, in a language you don’t yet have a full understanding of. Oscar did that.  

The first project Oscar and I built together was called The RIT Newsman, a weekly entertainment news show about RIT for RIT students. Since then, every successful video or media project I’ve worked on has had been with Oscar by my side, including this show. Together we’ve seen a lot of success, and have had to learn from a lot of failure.  

Oscar’s life story can teach you the power of taking calculated risks, the power of hard work, and the power of failing forward.

I met and became infatuated with Bridget Dugan in middle school when we were both on our middle school’s cross-country team. We dated for a brief time when I was 12 years old, and then she dumped my ass. I probably deserved it. We then spent years doing improv comedy and performing in shows together in our highschool’s theater department.

Bridget is awesome. She’s currently a flight attendant for a major airline, but more than that, she’s one of the smartest and funniest people I’ve ever met.

In this episode, we talk about how she used to blow milk out of her nose to make friends in elementary school, how some harsh feedback from a highschool teacher impacted her life, and her transition from being an English major into becoming a flight attendant.

Bridget regularly helps me make my stuff better. Without her impact on my life, I would be a worse person.
