  • Quest for Truth 152 Re-Quest 2: Jesus the Lord
    Revisiting one of our earliest shows, Keith opens with a short introduction to this solo episode. He reviews a few features to the podcast that were only a concept at the time, but have become features over the years.
    The original show can be heard by downloading it with this link.
    A delayed release that Keith explains as he opens with the, Meet the Host segment. He talks about some of the concept and background of the podcast, technical difficulties, rough ideas and all. Recovery from the holidays is in full swing, and recording plans are taking shape for this and other podcasts that Keith does. Namely the Alive and Still Married podcast he does with his wife.
    Note: As of the time of this Re-Quest, the Alive and Still Married podcast remains on hiatus.
    Continuing to look at the statements in the Apostles Creed, Keith pauses to consider why the scriptures can be held as true. Need more convincing? Refer to Lee Strobal’s book, Case for Christ. Particularly part 1 in the book, for historical evidence, and more support for why scripture is trustworthy for study, and spiritual matters. Another good bible teacher Keith recommends is (the now deceased) RC Sproul, and his Renewing Your Mind podcast. Go to your local library! Look them up on the Internet! Don’t believe me just because i tell you to, look into it more on your own.
    Main Topic:
    The statement: And (I believe )in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:
    A short list of bible verses are examined to document that Jesus is the only begotten, or uniquely born son of god. He’s the only human in history, or the future who is uniquely qualified to redeem us from the price of sin.

    * Psalms 2:7 “I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, `You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. (ESV)
    * John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. (KJV)
    * John 3:18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV)
    * Romans 1:4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, (ESV)
    * Romans 5:21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (ESV
    * Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (ESV)

    The purpose of the special qualification of Jesus is to pay for each of us going beyond what waits at the end of life… the grave. And make a way we can regain a relationship with God, and rejoin him in his spiritual kingdom. He did this through being resurrected from the tomb, making him the authority and power we have to be able to cqall him our lord
    In our original direction in the podcast we went to the topic of Sin, Man, and the Relationship with God. Check out Part 1, and Part 2.

  • Quest for Truth 151 Legends, Healing, and the Future Church
    With special guest, Doug McCoy, from douglasamccoy.com Nathan is back, and we’re live in the studio.
    Meet the Hosts. Doug shares how his area of California is free of fire, and floods, but the fog is thick. Keith has been working out, and has a slightly scratchy throat.
    We get started with the main part of the show. Each of us bringing a topic, and the rest of us adding our comments to it.
    Nathan leads off with various points were we have to determine whether it’s from mythology, or from the bible. Golden fleeces, fire in the sky, signs, and more.
    Doug asks about the future of the church. is it all over? Should Christians just pack it in, and get with the secular program? Is there any hope that the church will prevail against the gates of hell? Though there is much that might be changed to suit our changing world, thereare core doctrines that can never be compromised. Correct worship is important, but how can people worship, if they don’t first know the gospel of Jesus? For that matter, is there any other gospel than Jesus? What about people who claim there are other good ways to live, or that even an atheist can live with good morals? Hint: it depends on how you perceive an eternal destiny, and how you define morality, and the standards you base it on.
    Keith brings up the topic of faith healing. Is it real?
    Situation: Your wife is having a failing battle with cancer. Add to that depression, and mental disorders. the claim is that she would be healed, but she lost her faith, if she ever had it at all. If she didn’t have sin in her life, this would never have happened.
    She goes off all medication, and life goes haywire.
    Though healing is recorded in the bible, and God can certainly heal human bodies, most who claim to heal people today are bogus. If people really could heal in biblical fashion, it would be instant, and complete. Such people would do well to set up their ministries in hospitals , not churches, on TV, or the Internet. There would be a clear track record of completely healed people in their wake as proof. Any random person should be able to come to them to be completely healed, not hand picked shills in the audience.
    Responses to such faith healing claims, and being sick or disabled.

    * Sickness or healing has nothing to do with faith.
    * Some people are radical, wacko, hypocritical, judgemental. In short they have a misguided idea of faith.
    * Just ignore them.
    * There’s nothing wrong or sinful in suffering or hardship.
    * Don’t turn from the faith you have.
    * Hhardship builds or refines character.
    * Hardship proves depth of faith.
    * If having no faith, or a sinful life equals bad health. Why do you wear glasses?
    * If faith means pain free, why did it hurt when i kicked your shin?
    * If we all die, that means we get sick beyond healing. Do we all lose our faith? Are we all doomed to hell then? No.

    In closing, Doug shares his contact information: douglasamccoy.com.Nathan has a new website to check out for his church, Houston Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, Arkansas. Finally, we alll share our thoughts for the week to wrap it all up.

  • Quest for Truth 150 Grilled Hosts
    With the briefest of openings, we get right to a list of questions, gleaned from a variety of sources. Our Meet the Host segment turns into a session of asking the hosts anything, and we do our best to respond. To cap off the show is a brief look at some
    Compare and contrast between Abraham, and Jesus. Each being founders of physical and spiritual kingdoms, and each facing their own temptations with different results.
    Ready? Here’s the questions, asked, and once in a while commented on by our Retrobot guests. They ask the questions. Nathan and Keith give their answers.

    * Being the start of a new year, are there any things you have started? Resolutions, bible reading/study plans, goals to work toward, etc.
    * What are the top 5 things you would like to get out of 2018, before the year is over? (Either goals that are attainable, or ones you wish were).
    * what is one of the most significant things you read this week from the bible? (Give the theme of it, or state it in a sentence or two).
    * Do you ever keep notes in a journal? Either a prayer, or bible study journal? what benefits or methods would you recommend for those who might want to try it?
    * If you could choose to know everything about one topic, what area would you choose to be an expert?
    * Do you feel like you attract a certain kind of person?
    * If money were no object, where would you like to go for a vacation?

    Scripture:
    -Genesis 12, Matthew 4
    Similarities and Comparisons.
    Abram vs Jesus
    Righteousness: Both were righteous in their own way. One because God declared him righteous. The other because he was already God, who came to earth in human form.
    Lineage: Abram established a nation who became God’s chosen people. The vessel where all the world would be blessed. Jesus was the fulfillment of that nation, and vessel to extend the call for all nations to return to be righteous to God.
    Qualifications: Abram was in the line of people who came out of Noah, and from Adam, who managed to cling to the thread of right living, while all the other nations went their way. He stood as the focal point to grow a righteous nation out of him. Not perfect, or without failings, but entrusted to live right.
    Jesus was unique, being both man, and God. A product of the nation Abram started, but also its creator. Living a sinless life, he alone is qualified to be the focal point to launch an eternal, spiritual kingdom.
    Temptation: Abram went to Egypt to flee famine. His fears caused him to give into temptations to lie about his wife. It didn’t go well. Despite that, God still blessed him, and returned him to his land.
    Jesus was led, by the Holy Spirit to a place. In that place, Satan was allowed to tempt him. Things went well. Jesus overcame, was ministered to by angels, and his ministry began. His spiritual kingdom grew, starting with the disciples that were called.
    Kingdoms/Nations: the physical kingdom is all we know through our experience now. It’s limited, temporary, although it can be a very blessed experience. It’s easily corrupted by sin. The spiritual kingdom started with Jesus. We can experience it now, even while in the physical world. But once the physical passes away, the spiritual kingdom remains for eternity.

  • Quest for Truth 149 Introducing Spiritual Truth
    In the studio for a solo episode, Keith anticipates a call from Nathan Caldwell. After a visit from the Retrobots, who manage to sabotage a few things, we have to take a break while Keith irons out technical troubles.
    Getting right to our Main Topic, Nathan has phoned in his quick ideas on the appearing of the Holy Spirit as found in Acts 2.
    Keith reads from a few notes, mixing in Nathan’s comments, and even lets the Retrobots read from the chapter.
    First of all, it’s important to know the church has a mission that can only be powered by the working of the Holy Spirit. Jesus himself promised the Spirit would come, and empower each individual, as well as the body of believers as a group. It’s the Spirit who changes, and transformz uz into being more like Christ. Why? so we can share the good news of God’s grace, the word of Jesus, and the gift of the Spirit to others.
    The Spirit lives with, and empowers individuals. The first sign was in breaking down comunication barriers. Don’t get bogged down by the ability of whether you’re speaking in tongues, or not. it’s a gift that serves a purpose, God’s purpose, not a flashy show for you. Instead, be amazed in the promise that was fulfilled. Focus on being an agent of God to share the Spirit with others, not the end of the line of any blessings that have come your way. In a nutshell, the Spirit comes first, then amazing works are done.
    The Spirit empowers spreading the Gospel. When you’re filled by the Spirit first, truth spills out. Are you not a bold, or outgoing person? Good, just allow the Spirit to fill you, and let the Spirit work through you. it’s he who can doo that bold work, beyond what you thought possible. Are there struggles that need to be overcome? Only when you don’t pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Or you turn him away, or tone him down.
    The Holy Spirit builds community. How do you know the signs of God at work? There is unity, providing for others needds, fellowship, joy in physical needs, and joy with the others in the spiritual community. In short, the Spirit fills us with love, and it overflows to spill out on anybody else around. It goles viral. Imitated behavior is fake, and gets tiresome quickly. Seek God first, ask to be filled with the Spirit, and love is renewed, and is naturally spread around.
    Haven’t you ever experienced the overflowing love from the Spirit? it’s a once for all time event. if you aren’t experiencingg it, all you need to do is ask God for it. Ask to be filled, or refilled, and he’ll do it. People aren’t perfect. We leak. But that’s no reason to not ask to be filled again, every day. Then let the light of God’s love shine to those in the world around you.
    Start your new yer out right. Seek God, ask for his spirit, and share that good news with the world.

  • Quest for Truth 148 Christmas Focus
    Merry Christmas! Before we get started on the topic, Keith is joined by the Retrobots to share a couple announcements.
    First, the audio book of Christmas Timeline will be taken down later in the week. But It was a limited time gift to our listeners, and will now be available only to those who purchase the book on Amazon. However, a link on the Contact page will still give you access to it. It’s still a free bonus, and all it will cost is letting Keith know your email address. Don’t worry, your information will never be given away, or sold. It’s only so you can be alerted to any future bonus downloads.
    The next announcement is about the release of our new audio drama. The previous episode was a crossover episode to let listeners know it was out. The permanent home of Dangerous Christian will be on its own website, with its own RSS feed to subscribe to. As it develops, there will be cover art, a domain name, and it will soon be found in various podcast directories. For now, have a look for it at danger.heltsley.net and let us know what you think about the site, and the dramas.
    As we wait for a call from Nathan Caldwell, the Retrobots alert us of a voicemail from a guest we had on the show last month, Doug McCoy. He has a question about a recent announcement that the pope wants to change the Lord’s Prayer. He also gives us a quick take on what he thought of the announcement.
    Since Nathan’s call came in at the same time, we replay the full message for him to react to, and give a more detailed response. Keith weighs in on the matter, adding to the findings in news sources, and commenting on whether the recommended switch in the translations is valid, or if it matters. There is a translation issue, but it’s not with the wording the pope wants to have updated. Words that some contemporary, easy to read versions already have. Another, non-related topic is the line of translations the pope cites as the reason for the mistranslation.. A timeline that isn’t exactly correct, and Keith explains.
    The Retrobots, particularly David, causes a slight problem, and we lose the connection with Nathan. No problem. Through the magic of podcasting, and our old time machine from the early days of Keith’s other podcast, Retro Radio Podcast, we fly through the bonds of time and space to eavesdrop on Nathan as he delivers a Christmas sermon to his congregation.
    Main Topic
    Christmas Focus
    Beginning in Romans 12:1…

    1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
    2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
    Gifts of Grace
    3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
    4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function,
    5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
    6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;

    * Where is he?
    * Don’t be distracted from sharing Jesus.
    * Where does God fit in?
    * A child born to die

    Giving.
    Acts 20:35

    35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'”

  • Quest for Truth 146 Finding Real Peace
    After a moment of getting caught up, and a short segment of Meet the Hosts, we focus on a seasonal topic.
    Christmas is the time to celebrate peace on earth, and good will towards men. But what does that mean? Nathan shares about a final time where peace will come to earth, and be the normal way of life.
    What’s the source of peace? It’s an attribute of God’s character. Being made in his image, we, as humans, can achieve peace on a small scale, but true peace comes from God. It came in the flesh when Jesus was born, and is passed on when his disciples continue to carry that torch of peace.
    Why do we need peace? In our turbulet world it offers shelter and safety. In coming to such a conflicted world, peace seems to sometimes stir things up, and create more conflicts. But only because forces of evil in the world aren’t willing to give up power so easily.
    No matter how stirred up life becomes, or the depth of depression and despair, real peace can still find its way to offer a bubble of safety and hope. A peace that no storm can rage against, and win.
    Christmas carries a lot of man made baggage with it. If you can have fu n with such inventions of the holiday to find joy, that;s great. Santa, snowmen, reindeers, and all the decorations, and mor.
    Just don’t forget why peace came to earth. A peace that only God can offer. A way of salvation that only he can provide, so all people might return to him.
    To wrap the show up, we close with a few parting thoughtd. Keith explains the episode last week, anfd the free, limited time availability of his new book in ful audio form. If you missed it, it might still be available, but is primarily for those who purchase the book from Amazon. Nathan shares a word of support for a few felow podcasters, and shows on sandwiches, marriage, and being a good dad.

  • Quest for Truth 145 Back to Basic Doctrine, with Doug McCoy
    Some pre-recorded bits are mashed together as Keith asks his recent guest, Doug McCoy, a few basic doctrinal beliefs that Christianity teaches. In a later recording session the same questions were asked of our usual co-host, Nathan Caldwell.
    Listen to see how similar… or different they are… as they go head to head on these seven basic areas of belief.

    * God, Holy Spirit, JesusHow do they relate to each other? To humanity?
    * Humanity. Purpose of man. Is it basically good, or basically bad?
    * Sin. Is it really a problem?
    * Salvation, What is it? How do we get it?

    * Conviction,
    * Confession,
    * Repentance,
    * Faith,
    * Justification, Regeneration,
    * Sanctification

    * Elect. Pre-destined or Choice?
    * Sacraments

    * Baptism. Infant, or believer. Once, or repeat. Is the method important?
    * Communion, How often, wine or grape juice.

    * Eternal destiny.

    * Heaven. A real place? Who gets in? All or some?
    * Hell. Is it a real place, Is it forever?

    Any of these topics could merit it’s own show, so the responses are basic reactions to each point. Do you have a comment, or need some clarification? Drop us a line by Email or leave a comment on the show notes. We would love to here your ideas.
    Thanks to Doug McCoy for letting Keith grill him on these questions. Find out more about Doug at McCoyCast It’s the place where you’ll find Doug, “Podcasting the Things that Interest Me.”
