  • Quest for Truth 85 Fuzzy Faith Meets Real Beliefs.
    In getting started, we talk about a comedy project that may be showing up as part of HPN. If listeners, or readers of the show notes would like a preview to let us know what you think, send us an email to ask for more details. Also, stand by for a show that was sprinkled with technology glitches. We had fun with the conversation, despite the tech troubles.
    Meet the hosts: Learn about Nathan’s recent ordination service. What’s that about, and how does the ceremony work? Chris tells about fun at a St Louis Cardinals baseball game, and Keith tells about some broadcasting woes. Not to mention an unexpected solution to them. Finally a new baby has entered the world, and is doing well.
    Main Topic: Actually a smorgasbord of topics that start with a presentation by Chris, and a story found through Bible Gateway. “Ancient toilet confirms the bible.” In short, how archaeologists have once again proved that events, places, and people in the bible are real. Good king, Hezakiah, tore down pagan temples, turning one important one into a latrine. How’s that as a throne for a king? Read the all about it here.
    Next up, Nathan shares a confusing article on conflicting beliefs that Christians in America hold. The survey that reveals the fuzzy faith is “AMERICANS LOVE GOD AND THE BIBLE, but ARE FUZZY ON THE DETAILS.” This finding, found on Lifeway.com, tells the sad truth that Americans don’t know much about theology. Most say God wrote the Bible. But they’re not sure everything in it is true. Who goes to heaven? What does it take to get to heaven? Sadly, Christians are conflicted, and don’t seem to be concerned about it. Read the confusing facts here.
    To wrap up the importance of using sound logic to prove out beliefs, and not blindly trusting matters to others, Keith shares a few bullet points as found at Stand to Reason. These are taken from notes, and not directly from the web site.

    * If I place eyeglasses on a chair. You see them. Do you believe they’re there?
    * I remove the eyeglasses. You see they’re gone. Do you believe they’re not there?

    Thus, Belief is from evidence, not choice.
    Belief isn’t lost, but rejected.

    * Teaching in the family environment can fade.
    * A new environment can replace mom and dad “say so” with conflicting belief.
    * Yet further environmental change introduces beliefs that hitch hikes on the culture around us, but can also fade with new environments.

    What to do?

    * When there’s no reason to believe, there will be a lack of belief.
    * Belief built on traditions and blind faith will cause drift away to agnostic world views.

    Solution.

    * It’s OK to tear down what you know, doubt, ask questions. l
    * Rebuild beliefs based on sound logic, and testing it out.

    Keep seeking truth to hard questions.
    To put a final wrap to the show, Chris stumps us with sports trivia. Of origial teams in baseball, basketball, and football, which are still playing today? Where did they end up? Keith also presents another Churchy Church word. What’s the deal with the term, “Washed in the Blood?” Creepy, gory, and terrible, or a reason to be joyful? Listen in as Nathan and Keith give it a short discussion.

  • Quest for Truth 84 Faking Religion
    Or, You can’t Lose It, If You Never Had It.
    We’re back in the chat room, and thanks to our participant. Even though we ask chat participants to be muted during the main part of the show, trust me we had people today. Thanks. We had some interaction in the pre and post show times.
    Meeting the hosts, is where we get the details of the happenings in our lives in the past week. Keith and Chris had pretty much nothing going on. Nathan clears the air on his absence last week, and what exactly he did in Branson. We share a couple humorous baptism stories.
    The Main Topic boils down to losing your faith. World religions can often have very good teachings, even close to what the bible has to say, but there’s a subtle difference. Is humanity the highest order to base the teaching on? Or should it be God?
    Keith presents a real world situation of someone’s statement on why they claim to have lost their faith, and why they don’t see a need to pursue it again. In affect, feeling like the quality of their life hasn’t suffered, but has even been enriched in the ways of humanity. Keith points out a couple of passages, 1 Timothy 6, which deals with false prophets, and fighting the good fight of faith. Also 2Peter 1:5-12, which has a similar theme of the dangers of false prophets.
    It boils down to how is your quality of life holding up? What fruit are you producing? When times get hard, have you finally come to the place where your tank of ethical treasury has run dry, and you find yourself compromising, and betraying those ethics?
    Nathan presents a segment, we originally planned it to be a short segment, but it fit so well with the other talking points that we ran with it. Focusing one of those often misused, misunderstood, and misinterpreted passages, Nathan shares:
    Matthew 7: 21-23 (KJV).

    21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
    22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
    23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

    The problem.

    * People use this to point out the idea that someone can lose their faith. “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven…”
    * That getting to heaven is based on works: “…but he that doeth the will of my Father…”
    Or
    “…have we not prophesied… cast out devils… and in thy name done many wonderful works?”

    Context is key. Paying attention to what is said, and what is not said is important.
    Nathan puts it this way:

    Matt 7.21-23 is often considered scary to some. They believe it talks about loss of salvation. However, it does NOT!
    Sometimes in order to interpret what a passage says, you first need to know what it DOESN’T say. This passage is NOT saying one can lose his salvation. We can see this more clearly by looking at three factors:

    * The Bible doesn’t contradict itself 2 Tim 3.16-17 says God inspires all scripture, and since God inspired it, he knows what he’s talking about, and will not contradict himself.
    * We see in more than one passage that once someone trusts Christ, they are sealed.

    * Ephesians 1:12-14 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

  • Quest for Truth 83 Hang Out On The Fellow Ship.
    Part of a well rounded Christian life is when we can have times to just hang out. Fellowship. Though we are short one host today, we have a live chat in session, and spend time in a few rounds of questions ranging from trivia, to family matters.
    Though we put together a short segment on meeting the hosts, the whole show might be thought of as one big meet up session. We start by showing our stuff with science trivia. Then move on to some questions on relationships. Chris has more trivia, then we share some ideas on food, pets, alergies, and a few other areas.
    It doesn’t sound like much. Just some good natured hanging out with the guys. Spend about an hour with us, and maybe next time you could join in with the live chat.

  • Quest for Truth 82 From Dusty Church Words to Salvation
    We are back in the chat room, but without Chris, or others to chat with. Still, we have a lot to catch up on. We're still tweaking on some audio settings in the recording session, and the glitches are shrinking.
    Meet the Hosts. Nathan has exciting news about a new position to pastor at a new church. Keith has a broken window in the office, and tells about being ordained as a deacon.
    Random gleanings from the Internet. Learn about Christian singles who live together, atheists who have a good concept of what trials and tests are about, and some irksome news about universities that made a shameful list.
    Main Topic. We started to do some more installments of Churchy Church Words, in an earlier episode, but had to change plans. Today we get back to the topic. We have a look at a bunch of them ranging from a couple that are deeply entrenched in the dusty Greek and Latin to a bunch more common ones. In the process, we discuss the importance that the law still has on Christian teaching, the battling viewpoints of baptism, and a whole lot on matters surrounding salvation.
    Did we cover a curious word that church people toss around, and causes confusion for you? Did we give an answer that cleared it up for you? Do you have a word that you heard, but don't know what it means? Did we rush over any that we talked about today?
    Be sure to let us know how we did, or ask more questions. Contact us using email right from the web site.
    Want to ask a question in real time? Join us in a live chat session. Can't make it when we have the regular recorded session? Drop us a line, and Keith will be glad to open the chat room to hang out for a while.

  • Quest for Truth 81 Speaking of Chat
    Keith does a solo episode, and decides to tackle the topic of helping listeners to participate in our live chat room. There has been reports of having trouble getting signed in
    First we look at using the Teamtalk5 client for Windows, and using the customized link that is coded to take you right into the chat room. Keith runs into some trouble, and explains how to get past it, and into the room. Sometimes you may get an error, but you are actually on the server, but not in the room.
    Next, we look at the iTeamtalk app for iPhone. Before connecting, Keith walks through the preferences screen, and a few important settings to know about. The mobile app for Android should be very similar. The preferences has a lot of settings, but we’re mostly interested in how to customize your name, and set volume controls.
    Finally, after a computer crash, Keith switches to his MacBook, and shows how well the Macintosh chat client opens, using the custom link on podcast.heltsley.net/live and gets logged in.
    Some tips to remember:

    * Have ear buds handy to use for the mobile device. The audio is sent to the earpiece, rather than the speaker. The volume is also decreased, even when switching to the speaker.
    * Whether on a computer, or mobile device, using earphones of some kind helps cut down on feedback from other chat participants.
    * On mobile devices, the default is to use the Transmit (TX) button. Tap to lock it down, and tap again to release it.
    * Advantage to using the push to talk method include that if you’re in a noisy environment, you stay muted until ready to talk.

    Hopefuly, this will give you the confidence to pop into one of our live chats. We record most Monday mornings at 10AM Central time, and you’re welcome to join us.
    Music Tracks:
    Thanks to Kathy Adkins for permission to include her music in today’s show.

    * From her album, The Second Mile – Operator
    * Live from Sorento, IL – Hello. (Recorded August 13, 2016)

  • Quest for Truth 80 Live Internet Questions
    It’s our first live chat, with someone besides the hosts in the chat room. The recording is also from the live stream. Though the audio is good, there are some echoing troubles, and working out things like when to key the mic. OK, the audio is edited,but just a little, and not any more than usual.
    Meet the hosts. Nathan has been preaching more lately, and nervous about his potential new congregation. Chris is getting back into the swing of riding his new bicycle more, and Keith has rented his other house. Lots of nice praise worthy stuff.
    Main Topic. The topic we had slated for today had to be postponed. Keith couldn’t find his notes. Instead, we spend time on some random items gleaned from the Internet. Blogs, email alerts, and other podcasts.
    We talk about having a dead faith, and agree with the atheist who defined what that means. It’s never time to stop learning, both about the world around us, and the world of spirituality.
    What do you think about Microsoft’s newly announced dedication to make it easy to report hate speech? Big deal, little deal, or not an issue. What does this mean for those who are easily offended? What does it mean for Christians, or other religions? Does it cross boundaries of our right to freedom of speech?
    Can you tell if things are a sin, if they aren’t mentioned in the bible? If they are, what can we do about it, or should we do anything at all? It isn’t so much the sin, if you’ve searched the scriptures, and are convicted of it. It’s always worthy to refrain from one of those marginal sins, if it might make a brother fall into a temptation he can’t control. Be private, and discrete.
    Note: I promise the chat recording will get better. We need to perfect our technique in the way the room recording uses voice activation as opposed to a push to talk system. Participants are welcome to join in with the pre-show, or post-show discussion. In the future, we’ll probably limit chat to text only once the show is in progress. Maybe… we’re still working it out as we go.

  • Quest for Truth 79 Salty Preacher Review
    Getting started with a quick quest for food that leaves Keith lacking, the other hosts feast on a breakfast of snack food.
    Meet the Hosts. To try and tame the show length, we forego the usual Dumb News. Keith remembers another of the forgotten updates from the last time we were all together. Magical vegetables that turn into flowers. Chris shares about a fire alarm in the man cave, and Nathan is a cool breeze, in the newly installed air conditioner that interrupted his stay in our previous show
    Main Topic. We actually ramble on with momentum from last week where we presented the radio production of, One Foot in Heaven. First, Keith makes a correction, that the show actually had been made as a movie, and not just a theatrical play. It was a show about the behind the scenes life as a preacher, and since Nathan is both a preacher’s kid, and a preacher, he shares how things are still very similar.
    Bonus Topic. We look at Matthew 5:13-20, a part of the sermon on the mount. Jesus taught that believers are salt, light, and need to affect the world around them by teaching the truth.

    * Salt.

    * Flavors
    * Tenderizes
    * Preserves
    * Can lose its flavor, being trampled by men.

    * Light.

    * A small flame impacts a dark world in big ways.
    * Most affected when in prominent position
    * Can still impact in low places.

    * Teaching Truth.

    * The law is still valid, but fulfilled by Jesus.
    * Efforts of perfection fall short, even of top religious leaders.
    * Grace and forgiveness of Jesus is the key.

    * Conclusion.
    Jesus has the power to:

    * Restores salt to flavor.
    * Keep light going.
    * Spread the truth of grace , to transform the unbeliever.

  • Quest for Truth 78 Lux Radio Theater – One Foot In Heaven (Frederic March, Martha Scott). 420420
    There was no live recording today, so Keith presents a story from the days of classic, old time radio. Lux Radio Theater presented movies with the scripts altered from movie version, to an audio drama. Today’s feature wasn’t ever a movie, but it is based on a play, based on a book, written by a minister’s wife, and based on their real life. Whew! As indicated in the title, the show aired in 1942, on April 20. Sponsored by the Lux soap company, we take liberties to snip out commercials.
    After a few housekeeping bits of information concerning the chat room, how to send input for our upcoming 100th episode, and our new voicemail number, Keith gets the show rolling.
    The story is based on the real lives of the Spence family, and set in the time around the First World War. Rev Spence is a poor Methodist minister, with a growing family. Listen in for some behind the scenes glimpses in a pastor’s life as he struggles with a meager income, Dealing with the snooty, and ingrained ways of the congregation over all manner of his personal and public life. Preacher’s families have their own ordeals in spiritual matters, the same as anybody else, and when a house fire comes, it actually carries a blessing with it.
    Through the war years, and several dreary parsonages later, Rev Will Spence is frustrated with the poor condition he is expected to live in, while his parishioners live in relative luxury.
    His advancing career leads him to deal with the social standing of influential church members, building projects, and conflicts with staff. Challenges to long standing ways threaten to not only tear the church members apart, but vicious rumors are spread that disparage the pastor’s family.
    Will it lead to a need to move? Will the green pastures at the new church, with higher pay be the reward the family has been seeking from God? A little righteous indignation goes a long way to reclaim some errant members of the flock, and restore unity in the building project. Is this the end of the story? As far as the drama is concerned, but the Spencer were still around, and still ministering at the time this was produced.
    In epilog, as was the format of the show, Cecil B Demille spends a few moments with the stars, and introduces the radio drama for next week. As for us, we’ll be back to our usual recording routine next week, so be prepared for that.
    Don’t forget to contact us, however you like. Email, social media, or now with voice messages. (401)753-4844 or (401)7 Keith H.

  • Quest for Truth 77 Objections to Hell
    We try to keep things throttled back, but this turns out to be a longer episode than counted on.
    Our big anniversary show is coming soon, but we forget to share one important way to share your favorite moments. Fortunately, Keith included our new voice mail number at the front of the show introduction.
    Meet the Hosts. At first Keith can’t remember his update, but gets it in before the segment ends. Peachy. Chris and Nathan talk wrestling, and staying cool in the absence of air conditioning.
    Dumb News. We feature animals in the news, and some mix and match news headlines. Plus, an honorable mention plays into a topic in the rest of the show.
    After a bit of a bunny trail, we get started with the main topic.
    Main Topic
    Chris presents questions, gleened from various web pages where the authors state reasons why they don’t believe in hell. Or what things they are opposed to in such a place of eternal punishment.
    Are people right to challenge the God of the universe? The God of justice, and all things loving, forgiving, and fair?
    Nathan gets called away for a moment in there, but returns in time to share his thoughts on last week’s book review show.
    Want to take part in a live chat? Everything you need to know to get started is on the Live page. All about how to join the room… all about where to get the free chat client, but if you still have questions or need help… Contact me with email!
    As mentioned, we now have a voice maiol number. Leave a message, and I can call you if you like. Leave your voice message at (401)753-4844
