I have a deep and innate ability to empathize, and since I was a kid, to sense beyond the words spoken and actions taken. As an adult, I've harnessed these skills and used these gifts to connect deeply with others.Before I became a therapist, I worked as an executive director for private non-profit community based agencies in Oregon and Washington state, and then for the City of Seattle, developing community projects. In 1984, I unfortunately injured my back, and it became clear that I would need to change careers. The question was: what role can combine my commitment to empowering others while allowing me to sit down? After a great deal of reflection and exploration, I decided to go back to school in the fall of 1991 to become a counselor.At the time, psychological studies primarily focused on cognition, family of origin of issues and the belief that if you just changed your thinking, then your emotions and mood would change for the better. During my clinical internships, however, I found that talking through issues makes people feel temporarily better, but most of the time, it just isn't enough. Because of my background in meditation and energy work (dating back to 1974), I knew there was more to being than just thinking. Many of the problems that keep people stuck dwell in places that are difficult to consciously access. So, I began studying methodologies that provided a more holistic view- incorporating mind, body and spirit. In 1993, I graduated with a Master of Arts in Applied Behavior Science from City University in Bellevue, WA.By 1996, I began working with Roger Callahan in a new therapy modality- Thought Field Therapy—which addresses a variety of mental and physical ailments through specialized tapping of meridian points. Much like acupuncture, Thought Field Therapy works to locate problem areas and reinvigorate the vital force or energy that allows you to thrive.By 1999, I began studying Donna Eden's Energy Medicine theories. And from 1999-2007, I coordinated her teaching staff and served on the faculty of her certification program. Since then, I have incorporated not only Thought Field Therapy, but all nine of the vital subtle systems into my practice. Furthermore, I'm able to combine these with traditional therapy models, including cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness meditation, hypnotherapy, EMDR and more. With all of these tools in my tool kit, I'm able to help folks identify and overcome a wide variety of concerns.In 2005, I added “coaching” to my scope of practice by studying with Mentor Coach. “Coaching” is very different than “psychotherapy.” In coaching, we focus on the here and now and your desires for the future. Coaching is all about clarifying what you want in life and implementing a plan to obtain those desires.Whether you need coaching, psychotherapy or energy psychology, I believe in exploring whatever means necessary to discover and experience profound healing and growth. As someone who lost a parent at a young age and has lived with chronic illness most of my life, I'm acquainted with pain and suffering. However, I also know that healing is possible. There are always ways to find relief, and we must explore all those solutions in order to live life to the fullest.My overall goal is for you to bring techniques, insights and lessons learned in therapy out into the world. Although we can analyze your resources, skills and passions, it's your responsibility to apply these in your everyday life. Real-life applications are, ultimately, what will create the new, more positive world you need.Outside of therapy and coaching, I enjoy spending time in my garden, with my friends and family and with my dogs and cats. I'm committed to keeping my neighborhood a good place to live, so from time to time, I'm involved in local politics.
