When You Have Nowhere Else to Go

Bible Reading:
“So Jesus said to the twelve, ‘You do not want to leave also, do you?’ Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life’” (John 6:67-68 NASB). 

After Jesus had said some difficult words for His followers to understand, many of them got up and left. Some probably realized He wasn’t the conquering Messiah-king they had hoped for. Others perhaps got frustrated with not being able to understand Jesus’ words. After many of them left, Jesus asked His remaining twelve disciples if they, too, wanted to leave.

That’s when Peter spoke up and boldly proclaimed, “To whom shall we go?” In other words, “We have nowhere else to go.”  

Have you ever felt like that? 

I remember the day I felt I had nowhere else to go but to Him. My parents had just split up, and there was no security in my home, in my plans, or in my heart. Today, I look back on that day as the moment in which I took ownership of my faith. The moment in which my bond with Him was sealed, and I realized I had nowhere else to go but to Him. 

When we grow up learning about Jesus from the time we’re young, or if we’ve walked with Him a while, we can get complacent and put our lives in cruise control and fail to acknowledge His presence, direction, wisdom, guidance, and love every moment of our day. Faith becomes a compartment that is added to the many elements of our life, instead of becoming our whole life. That’s when disappointment can rock us.

We live in a world that has made perfection into a pursuit — and most of us are exhausted from chasing it. The pressure to appear finished, polished, and put-together follows us into our relationships, our work, our faith, and even the way we see ourselves in the mirror. But what if the imperfections we are trying so hard to hide are not the problem? What if they are actually part of the masterpiece?

Isaiah 64:8 offers one of the most tender images in all of Scripture: God as the Potter, and us as the clay — works in progress, continually being shaped and molded in His hands. Clay that has been through the fire cannot go back to what it was before. But even broken ceramics can be worked into something beautiful — strengthened, remade, transformed into a mosaic that tells a richer story than a flawless surface ever could. God does not stand over our imperfections in disappointment. He is the One who uses every shattered place, covers every crack with His grace, and works all things — yes, all things — for good. The call to "be perfect" in Matthew 5:48 is not a demand that we arrive; it is an invitation to mature in love, to be sanctified and shaped by His hands over a lifetime. We are not finished yet. And that is not a failure — it is the whole point. Lean into the work of His hands, and let what you thought was your flaw become the very place His light shines through.

Ponder Today

1. We are not finished products — we are works in progress in the hands of a master Potter who knows exactly what He is shaping us into and why every stage of the process is necessary.
2. Even broken pieces are never wasted in God's hands — just as shattered ceramics can be worked into beautiful mosaics, every shattered place in our lives can be remade into something purposeful and good.
3. The pursuit of perfection can become a subtle way of pushing God out of the picture — pretending we are finished and have it all together leaves no room for the Potter to keep working.
4. Our imperfections, when shared honestly, grow compassion and community — what we are most tempted to hide is often the very thing that connects us most deeply to others.
5. The call to "be perfect" in Matthew 5:48 is not a demand to arrive but an invitation to mature — to allow God to sanctify us in His hands and in His timing, covered all the way by His grace.

Today's Prayer

Lord, I am ready to admit imperfection. I am tired of striving toward a moving target and pretending I have it all together. Help me not to see my imperfections as setbacks, but as windows through which Your light shines most clearly. Help me accept my intricate pattern and trust You to make and perfect me the way You desire, in Your time and by Your grace. Show me the beauty of brokenness, and teach me that not having it all together makes me a vessel for Your grace — not a disappointment, but a work still in Your hands. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“The Enneagram was demanding that I look to it first, and only through its lens could I look to God second.”

That’s just one of the revelations made by author and Oxford theology student Christina Lynn Wallace.

For years, Christina loved the Enneagram—a tool that has become popular in counseling and recovery circles. It helped her understand herself. It gave language to her struggles, her relationships, her emotions, and even her marriage. Like many Christians, she encountered it almost entirely through Christian sources and believed it was simply a helpful tool for self-awareness and spiritual growth.

Then her mother asked her a question she couldn’t shake: Have you ever really looked into the origins of it?

What followed was months of research that eventually led Christina to publicly walk away from the Enneagram altogether. And there are some shocking findings, including one of the founders admitting to having something or someone take over his body while writing aspects of the framework.

In this episode, we have one of the most nuanced and difficult conversations we’ve ever had on the podcast. Christina walks through the documented origins of the Enneagram, including the occultic and spiritual practices tied to several of its foundational figures, and explains why she ultimately came to believe the issue runs deeper than personality theory. At the center of the discussion is a bigger question—one that directly connects to addiction, recovery, identity, and discipleship:

What happens when something other than Jesus becomes the lens through which we understand ourselves?

This conversation is not about panic, shame, or cheap outrage. In fact, both Christina and I openly acknowledge that many people—including us—have found aspects of the Enneagram helpful. But we also wrestle honestly with the danger of allowing any system, framework, program, or personality tool to become an identity rather than simply a descriptor. As well as believing that our relationship to God is determined by a tool or test.

We also discuss the tension Christians often face when dealing with things that may have pagan or occultic roots. Can something be redeemed? What does discernment actually require? And how do we avoid both fear-driven legalism and spiritual naïveté?
