Point #2 – A college degree has a direct correlation to value in fields like engineering, accounting and nursing. But increasingly, a degree holds no correlation to the field of work graduates go into. So here are 5 jobs that pay very well and don’t require a degree!

Job 1 – Web Developer

-       There are three kinds of web developer. Front end (the part of the site people see), back end (the infrastructure and behind the scenes stuff) and full-stack developer (can do both front and back end). 

-       They can easily earn $60,000 and a full stack developer can get a six figure salary. 

-       Design exciting websites, work with graphics, and test new features

-       Monitor web traffic and learn to understand customer buying trends

-       Work from anywhere there’s a good internet connection

-       Glassdoor reports the average salary for a front-end or backend developer is around $74,000 but this varies heavily due to experience and can be much higher.

-       A full stack developer can make an average of $95,000 and be much higher based on experience.

Job 2 – Executive Chef

-       Love food? Try being an executive chef! You have to know more than just cooking. You need to be able to manage people and a kitchen as well. 

-       Creating exciting new dishes and entrees 

-       Hire and train staff

-       Follow all food and safety regulations

-       According to Payscale, the average pay is $61,400 

Job 3 – Claim adjusters and examiners

-       Investigate the circumstances of insurance claims

-       Review police reports of incidents

-       Compile evidence from multiple sources 

-       Claims adjusters on average earn around $50,000 but get perks like company cars and bonuses that total over $60,000 in total compensation

Job 4 – Electrical power line installers and repairers (lineman)

-       Installation, repair and maintenance of overhead and underground electrical power lines and auxillary equipment

-       Working on everything from power plants to customer’s homes

-       Jobs in every city with utility, energy or telecom companies

-       Get to work outside, high up and little desk time

-       The average lineman can make $65,000-$74,000 depending on the type of company they work for

Job 5 – Diagnostic medical sonographers

-       Not just about babies, but important for heart and cardiovascular system to detect blockages of arteries, veins and heart (life saving information for many)

-       Only two years for an associate degree and an expected increase of demand for this position by 19% over the next 10 years

-       Jobs in hospitals, doctor offices, medical labs and outpatient centers. There’s also new markets for traveling sonographers if you like moving to different places often!

-       Average salary in 2019 was $74,320 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics

Sometimes the best investment doesn’t look like an investment. 

Point #1 – Before you invest in property, stocks, or anything else, you have to look at your debt. 

People don’t realize it, but sometimes paying down additional debt has the BEST RETURN on your money? 20% on a credit card is a better “investment” than buying a stock with a 10% return. That’s a 100% better return on your money. 

Let’s say you get a check for $10,000 and are looking to invest it. If you had $10,000 in credit card debt at 20%, that’s going to cost you $2000 in interest. If you took that $10,000 and invested it in the stock market and made 10%, then you would make $1000 and of that $1000, you would have to pay taxes on top of that! If you pay 20% on it, then you only made $800. 

That means your actual investment earnings was $800. You could have kept an extra $1200 if you had just paid off the credit card!

 Quote – It’s not about the money you make. It’s about the money you keep! That’s not just a reference to spending, but taxes too.

 Point #2 – Do you have 6 months of your monthly expenses saved? If not, invest in stability and your financial foundation.

Can you imagine trying to build a house without laying down a foundation? That’s what investing without 3-6 months expenses is. Because most good investments require time to accrue additional value and can often fluctuate in value or be unavailable altogether. Well if disaster strikes and you need to pull your money out prematurely or can’t access the money because its locked up, then what good is it if you get kicked out of your house!

Investing in your financial foundation is the best place to start.

Statistic – 2 out of 3 people don’t have $500 saved

Point #3 – Invest in what you know or pay someone to invest in what they know for you

Trading stocks is a bad idea for most people. Emotions will ruin you financially. So paying someone to manage your money is often a fantastic way to go.

Do you know the real estate market really well? Then researching and buying property is probably the way you should go!

Investing in a new business has a massive upside! Are you looking to start a side hustle or full time company based on a hobby or passion? Then this can be a great investment as well! It’s risky but has a huge upside.

Not an expert on any given thing? Then find something you enjoy that you could monetize and invest in yourself! Buy online courses, go to seminars and conferences, get a mentor in that space. An investment in yourself is the best investment.

 But the most important thing about investing to remember is this…

Why are we so afraid to talk about money? Why is it considered a social taboo? 

From an American perspective, we can blame the British for this one. Jodi R. R. Smith of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting said that the wealthy didn’t need to discuss it because most wealth was based on land so it was relatively easy to figure out what someone earned. And those further down the feudal ladder had very little so there wasn’t much to discuss.

Stat 1 – 76% of people are not comfortable ASKING A FRIEND how much they make.

If you can’t ask a friend, then who can you ask? Shocking results from this survey. The one silver lining is that younger Americans are more open to talking about money over dinner, but it’s still less than a quarter of them.

There are three types of groups where it is most natural (or not natural) to discuss money

1. inter-generational, in which parents and children don’t discuss money with each other, 

2. publicity, in which wealth is not publicly disclosed (to the dismay of charities), and 

3. peers, in which one does not discuss wealth with friends or colleagues so as not to either embarrass them or feel ashamed yourself.

Fact – Men are more comfortable than women talking to friends and family about money.

This hurts women when applying for positions because they have less leverage and understanding about what their skills are worth on the job market.

Point 2 – Student loan debt is the most uncomfortable financial topic to discuss (36%) followed by childcare expenses (30%) and living paycheck to paycheck (26%).

Point 3 – Only 11% of parents are likely to start a conversation about money with their ADULT children!

51% of Americans and 71% of Millennials think that society would be healthier if people felt they could discuss personal finances more freely.

75% of Americans admit to having made a financial mistake and most people listed “financial knowledge/education” as the primary cause for most of them.

So why? In our culture money is a measure of success. When people don’t feel as though they measure up, to even their own standards, it can create an anxiety that we will expose ourselves as failures to others and ourselves.

If we expanded our definition of success from being solely about money then we probably wouldn’t have as hard of a time talking about. I don’t consider “rich people” successful. A lot of rich people are divorced multiple times with drug addictions and aren’t contributing members to society. 

I consider a person successful if they have a life of purpose that doesn’t cause financial burdens on others. That’s a rough benchmark for me. You need to be working towards something. 

A thriving family. Being the best nurse on your floor of the hospital. Becoming the starting point guard for your high school basketball team. We should all be striving for something that matters to us. But, if you are an adult, there is a component of monetary responsibility in there too. 

So to recap the episode:

-       It’s primarily the British’s fault we don’t talk about money

-       But now, its actually all of our faults

-       Men are more likely to talk about it than women

-       And we don’t talk about it to hide potential feelings of failure and inadequacy

-       Success is not defined by money.

Bitcoin is the most popular buzzword in money right now and almost no one really knows what it is. But the only thing people ask me is whether or not they should invest. So…should you?

To answer this question, we are going to treat this like a video game. You have to pass certain “bosses” or “quests” in order to be able to advance to the next one. If you don’t pass one of these, then you can’t keep going forward in order to achieve the ultimate, imaginary, and highly sought after Stephen Courson stamp of approval on this topic

But before we dig in, I want to tease you with a few bitcoin facts. There are other cryptocurrencies centered around the technology of blockchain and I’ll cover that in a different episode, but for now, here’s some things to know.

Fact #1 – Satoshi Nakamoto is the creator of bitcoin and no one knows who he/she/they are. It could be a person. Could be a group. They think they found who it is…but its unconfirmed to this day.

Fact #2 – There will only ever be 21M bitcoin in existence. They are released on a schedule and it limits the supply which, in theory, will drive up the price over time if demand increases. As of now, there are over 18M of those in circulation.

Fact #3 – May 22nd is known as Bitcoin Pizza Day because on May 22, 2010, a programmer in Florida named Laszlo Hanyecz traded 10,000 bitcoin for two Papa John’s Pizzas. Today, those bitcoin are worth $185,000,000 dollars. I hope the pizzas were delicious. 

 Boss Question #1 – Do you have 6 months expenses in savings?

If the answer here is no, then you have no business in bitcoin. The end.

You should not invest in ANYTHING except your financial foundation and paying off credit card/high interest rate debt until you have 6 months expenses in savings. The one caveat would be a 401k with employer match.

Boss Question #2 – Do you have any other investments such as a 401k or IRA?

If you wanted to start doing karate, I wouldn’t put you in the circle with a black belt on your first day. Or even your 100th day. 

When you start investing, they may be boring, but proven 401ks and IRAs are the way to get moving. The tax incentives make them worth it and almost a can’t lose situation. This is key for your financial foundation. Start here first before you move on young grasshopper.

Boss Question #3 – Have you ever traded individual stocks before?

Bitcoin is very volatile and while it does go up, it really goes down too. The problem with most people trading is the fact that they are emotional about it and don’t hold through the downward spirals. Because of that, they lose.

I recommend trying to trade stocks first. They go up and down but depending on the stock, not nearly as much as cryptocurrencies like bitcoin.

Final Boss Question #4 – Can you lose all of this money and sleep okay at night?

This is it. Bowser in the castle guarding the princess. 4-armed Baraka ready to take you on. Big Boss from Metal Gear. Dr. Neo Cortex from Crash Bandicoot. Okay you get it. 

 The final question to ask yourself before you start trading bitcoin is actually the same question you ask yourself before you walk into a casino and put all your money down on a hand of blackjack. 

 Can I afford to lose all of this money and still sleep okay at night if I do? If the answer is yes…a TRUE YES, then get to it and go trade some bitcoin! 

The reality is, bitcoin will likely never go to zero. It has an important use case. But there is no guaranty it will continue to go up over time. There are new cryptocurrencies popping up all the time and while bitcoin is still king, they said the same thing about Nokia Phones, Netscape internet browsers and Myspace.

The point is, the first of a technology rarely wins in the long run.

On to Black Friday 2020!

1.     Start early 

So a few years ago, to minimize people literally trampling and fighting each other at the door, the stores starting spacing out Black Friday over a few days over a few weeks. This has reduced the loss of human dignity during the maddening retail buzz this time of year

Despite that, people seem to wait for the actual “Black Friday” which is the day after Thanksgiving. However, based on an analysis from Consumer Reports, its best to start early as some of the best deals can be found then and the items are more likely to be in stock.

Walmart, for example, just announced it will have three "Deals for Days" events staggered throughout November that kick off online and then move to stores. Target's "Deal Days" will Black also span the entire month of November

2. Skip the in-store sales and shop online. There will probably be fewer big in-store promotions this year—no reason to attract crowds—and more emphasis on online shopping, with either free delivery or ship-to-store programs with curbside pickup.

Most big time stores such as Target, Best Buy and Walmart have already announced they will be closed on Thanksgiving. (which is the way it should be)

I honestly hate that people duck out right after Thanksgiving lunch/dinner to go shopping when we should be falling asleep on the couch together, watching football and yelling about politics and family disagreements and dysfunction.

3. Use Websites and Apps. 

The Consumer Reports website lists the current prices at various outlets for the products in our ratings. You can also try Google Shopping, PriceGrabber, and Shopzilla. When you’re in a store, smartphone apps such as BuyVia, Shopkick, ShopSavvy, and Shopular let you scan bar codes or QR codes to compare prices, get discounts, and score coupons.

Browser extensions like camelcamelcamel and Honey for Chrome and Firefox can help with this and those are free!

4. Store loyalty programs offer early access and special coupons so use it them. They can have exclusive offers and make it worth your while.

5. Retailers are rewarding those who follow social channels with special offers 

Why? because it gives them access to you the rest of the year. Follow them for now and unfollow the rest of the year to avoid overspending. 

 6. Create a budget and STICK TO IT. 

 Otherwise you will end up like 39% of Americans who report regret over how much they spent on Black Friday. That’s 1 in 3 people have regrets over Black Friday! What a terrible thing. On top of that, over half of all Black Friday shoppers report stress after making their purchases. 

 7. TVs are one of the hottest items that people buy this time of year. The average price of a TV drops 18% during Black Friday sales and for larger TVs, it can be up to 35%. The new models and new tech for TVs are rolling out soon and they are clearing up shelf space for the new line ups. 

 8. Not ALL Black Friday deals are good deals. If you have a list or atleast an idea of what you are looking to buy, then start paying attention to the prices now. That’s because stores know people will buy these items regardless of discount so they take advantage of that. Some stores will even mark the item as on sale for $19.99 when its regular price is $19.99 just to create hype and urgency.

Have you ever made a big financial mistake? What was it? Listen up and I’ll give you mine… 

And by the way, I’m not talking about “should have bought bitcoin in 2012” or “wish I put my life savings in Apple stock in 2005”. Give me something legitimate because even if you had bought those back then, I’m willing to bet my amazing dog and partner in crime, Leia, that you would have sold out before it ever reached its all-time highs.

Give me something legitimate. Should’ve bought a property but didn’t? Skipped putting money in your 401k? Got stuck in a MLM scheme? Wasted money on partying too much for years? What was it? 

Here’s my top 3 doozies:

·      Lost $5000 to a MLM scheme that literally got shut down the week I signed up for it. 

·      I had an opportunity to buy an apartment I was living in for $30,000 back in 2009 when the housing market crashed but I didn’t for no reason other than ignorance! That same apartment is selling for $140,000 now. My monthly payment would’ve been $142…

·      And my favorite, stopped putting money in my employers’ stock purchase plan after a year in. That stock is now up, as of today, 646% since I started at the company and I would have over $1 million if I had just contributed what I was contributing for 3 years and then left it alone.

That enough screw ups for you? I’ve got more but those are my big ones. But here’s the thing. Those all happened to me early. Before I was 24. I learned my lesson and started learning lessons about how money and investing works and since then I’ve made more good decisions than I have bad ones. 

This study from TD Ameritrade was very telling. 

Third largest regret – Having a low credit score.

Really? This doesn’t seem so bad at face value. But it is a thorn that will keep coming up no matter how much cash you have in your bank account. Here’s a few ways how it’ll hurt you.

·      Poor credit can make it harder to get a car and home loans

·      It can make it difficult to get a credit card account

·      Even if you do get a loan, your interest rate can be 30-100% higher than a good score

·      Lower credit scores also usually pay more for auto, renter’s and homeowner insurance

·      Certain employers may run a credit check especially if your position requires handling money

Second largest regret – Not having an emergency fund  

Now the study didn’t confirm how much the “emergency fund” qualified for but it implied the larger 6 month fund. There’s the $1500 threshold we hold as a general rule here while you’re aggressively paying off debt. But overall, your emergency fund needs to be 6 months as part of your financial foundation. 

 The largest regret – Not investing in a 401k.

Truth #1 – Uncertainty sucks. Especially in 2020. 

Regardless of who wins, both candidates have been pretty vague about how their plans will work. There’s lots of promises and the outcomes are based on government efficiency which, outside of the military, has been proven over and over again to run as smoothly as a car with square tires on a gravel road. 

 Truth #2 – Local elections can have a bigger impact on your money than national elections (Marketplace.org)

 Local elections have to do with the things you use regularly in your daily life: schools, transit, water supply, waste and sewage, fire, police, etc.

Truth #3 – It doesn’t matter which party is in the White House, the stock market returns are basically the same when measuring 4-year terms after a presidential election. 8.6% for Republicans and 8.8% for Democrats. (Fidelity)

Truth #4 – If you are concerned about your tax bill this year, you can take steps to minimize it. (Fidelity)

• Converting a traditional 401(k) or IRA to a Roth
• Bunch several years of charitable contributions into this year
• Consider accelerating some capital gains
• Exercising stock options
• Revisit your estate plan

Truth #5 – Emotions ALWAYS get in the way of good, sound financial advice. Don’t let that happen to you.

Ever hear “buy low, sell high”? So why do so many people screw this up? Emotions. That’s all. And guess what? People are emotional right now for many reasons. Some good. Some not so good. 

Truth #6 – No one is coming to save you. No one. Be your own Superhero.

I don’t care who gets elected, politicians at the federal level don’t care about you, the individual. They care about numbers. They care about re-election. They care about their agenda. Think I’m wrong? Then why didn’t they pass the second stimulus package before the election for the most vulnerable of our nations people.

 We’ve been passing out food for months in record numbers in our community. And while the jobless have gone down since the early months of 2020, we are still at double digit unemployment. People NEED this. And don’t blame one party or the other. There’s more special interest stuffing in these bills than there is stuffing in your grandmother’s Thanksgiving turkey. 

Here’s a few items I compiled from the LA Times and Politico that were included in the first stimulus for 2020 from both political parties:

-       Provision for the FDA to approve innovative sunscreens (to benefit L’Oreal)

-       Casinos can tap government loans for assistance (a payback for tax breaks that weren’t extended from Hurricane Katrina in 2005)

-       Free video visitation in prison (and money to provide such services)

-       $25M for the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington

-       $50M to Institute of Museum and Library Services (whose sole purpose is to give money to libraries)

-       $75M for National Endowment of the Arts and another $75M for the National Endowment of the Humanities

-       $10B loan for the broken US Postal Service (and it was argued this won’t be enough to keep it afloat and will need more)

What do these things have to do with the average person in need during the pandemic? NOTHING. 

And after all that, what did THE PEOPLE get? $1200. Once.

Thing 1 – 68% of people said they would rather talk about their weight than money. 

Thing 2 – 34% of people said they’d rather sit in traffic for an hour than talk about money mistakes to a financial advisor.

Thing 3 – 27% would rather get stung by a bee than talk about money.

Thing 4 – 32% think it would be better to go to the DMV than work on a detailed financial plan.

Thing 5 – 20% would take an hour in jail than build a five-year financial plan.

Thing 6 – 26% would rather talk politics with someone they disagree with than write a financial plan with a family member.
