What if the key to obedience isn't just hearing God's word, but fearing the God who speaks it? In this episode of The Word of the Lord Came, Rob Pine unpacks the remarkable turning point in Haggai 1:12 — the first time in our study that God's people actually obeyed. Lesson 9: Zephaniah — A Day of Judgment, A Day of Singing

"I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth." That's not a metaphor — it's God's own words in Zephaniah 1:2-3, and it sets the scope for one of the most sobering prophecies in the Minor Prophets.

In this episode, Rob Pine walks through the book of Zephaniah and its central theme: the Day of the Lord, a coming judgment so broad in scope — that small word "all" again — that it reaches every nation, every person, every era, climaxing in an end-times event still ahead of us. Rob traces the nations God calls out in chapter 2, the near-term fulfillment in Judah's exile and the 536 BC return of the remnant, and the two sins that provoke God's wrath most: idolatry and complacency.

That second sin gets special attention. Zephaniah 1:12 describes God searching Jerusalem with lamps for people who are "stagnant in spirit" — content, self-satisfied, and indifferent toward him. Rob unpacks why complacency is just as dangerous as outright rebellion, both for individual believers and for churches, and what real repentance looks like in response.

But Zephaniah doesn't end in judgment. Chapter 3 closes with one of Scripture's most tender pictures of God: a King who rejoices over his people with singing. For the remnant that seeks the Lord, there's restoration, security, and delight.

Think of the most righteous person you know — honest, humble, trustworthy, someone of unquestionable integrity. Now consider what the Bible says: that person doesn't exist. Not even one. So how can Habakkuk 2:4 say the righteous will live by faith — and mean it? That's the question Rob Pine tackles in this episode on the book of Habakkuk. It's one of the most quoted lines in all of Scripture: Paul anchors it at the doctrinal center of Romans (1:17) and Galatians (3:11), and the writer of Hebrews echoes it just before the great Hall of Faith in chapter 11. But if no one is righteous — not David, not Abraham, not anyone — who exactly are these righteous people living by faith? Paul's answer, drawn from Genesis 15:6 and Galatians 3:6, is that righteousness isn't earned. It's received. Abraham believed God's promise, and God reckoned it to him as righteousness. That same exchange is at the heart of the gospel: Jesus took our unrighteousness to the cross and gave us his righteousness. Rob also traces Habakkuk's own faith journey — from confusion and frustration to struggling belief to full-throated worship under any circumstance — and suggests that embracing our own unrighteousness is exactly where the fullness of God's grace begins. Every Rosh Hashanah, Orthodox Jews walk to the water's edge and cast bread into the waves, picturing a promise written centuries earlier: a God who tramples sin underfoot and hurls our iniquities into the depths of the sea.

That promise comes from Micah 7:18-19, and it's the hinge of this episode. Rob unpacks the ancient Jewish ritual of Tashlikh and traces it straight back to Micah's own words about the character of God.

But mercy isn't the whole story. Rob walks through Micah 6, where God puts Israel on trial — laying out specific charges of theft, fraud, deceit, and violence — and asks the question underneath it all: why can't God simply overlook sin? Drawing on Romans 9, Matthew 7, and the work of author Joshua Ryan Butler, Rob shows how the same God who judges is the God who delights to forgive — and why that's actually good news.

This episode also traces the doctrine of the remnant, from the Israelites who returned from Babylon to the disciples who walk Christ's narrow road today, and lands on the reason Jesus came to earth in the first place: to take the punishment for sin so the remnant could be saved.

What does it take to turn an entire city back to God—and what happens when the next generation forgets? In Lesson 6 of The Word of the Lord Came, Rob Pine pairs two Minor Prophets who both deliver prophecy about the same city: Nineveh, the powerful capital of the Assyrian Empire. Together, Jonah and Nahum tell one of the most sobering stories in all of Scripture.

Jonah's message sparked the greatest revival recorded in the Bible. The entire city of Nineveh—an empire known for ruthless cruelty—humbled itself before God in genuine repentance. Rob unpacks the three Cs of that repentance: conviction, confession, and conversion. God showed mercy. Nobody, as Rob puts it, is out of reach of God's mercy.

But Nahum's prophecy, written roughly 125 years later, announces total destruction. The city is gone. What happened? Rob traces the answer not to the passage of time, but to a single generation—one that grew up not knowing God. Drawing a straight line from Judges 2 to Nineveh to America today, this lesson asks a pointed question: could the same thing happen to us?

The answer, Rob argues, lies in taking seriously Christ's command in Matthew 28:19–20. Discipleship starts at home, with our own children and grandchildren. Political solutions won't preserve a nation's faith—families passing it on will.

Hosea's wife Gomer represents Israel's spiritual adultery — seeking identity, security, and blessing from sources other than God.

Rob offers two working biblical definitions that bring idolatry out of the ancient world and squarely into modern life. Idols in 2026 aren't carved from stone. They're the obsessions of our heart — the things we run to for identity, security, and worth when we should be running to God.

Have you ever read a verse in Scripture and moved right past it without stopping to consider the wonder behind the words? In this episode, Rob Pine takes two verses — one from Joel and one from Obadiah — and unpacks what they really mean, for the people who first heard them and for us today.

The first is Joel 2:32: "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." It sounds familiar. But what does it actually mean to call on the name of the Lord? Rob traces this phrase from Abraham and Isaac building altars in Genesis, to Moses at the burning bush, to the Ten Commandments, to Jesus praying for His disciples on the Mount of Olives the night He was betrayed — and to Paul quoting Joel directly in Romans 10:13 to the church. Calling on God's name isn't just a phrase. It's an intimate relationship. It's a life lived in a way that reflects who He is.

The second is Obadiah 1:15: "For the day of the Lord draws near on all the nations." Obadiah was written about Edom — a proud, fortress-secured nation that God said He would utterly destroy. And He did. There is no nation of Edom today. But Rob points out what's easy to miss: God didn't say the Day of the Lord was coming for Edom only. He said it was coming for all nations. What happened to Edom is a preview — a forerunner — of what will happen when Christ returns.
