Cycles of positive and negative experiences define our journey through life. To make progress, we need to learn how to keep moving forward and remain faithful whether we’re on top of the world or it feels like the world is on top of us. Psalm 40 reminds us how to feel gratitude in the middle of grief and cultivate qualities that result in faithfulness and progress in every situation.

The first song in the Book of Psalms provides an orientation to the entire book and teaches us what life looks like when everything works properly. However, we quickly learn (and many Psalms remind us) that life doesn’t always progress according to plan. This first song also gives us a new perspective to view all of life—the successes along with the disappointments—in vibrant colors we never could imagine on our own. Let’s hit the road together with the Psalms.

Jesus left heaven to come into our world and serve us. (Mark 10:45) He is our example, and, therefore, as we follow Jesus, we should be serving others. When we serve together as a unified church family, the world sees a powerful witness for the love of Jesus. (John 17:23) In August, we will have an exciting opportunity to send that exact message to our community.

Whether or not we’ve considered it carefully, we all have a connection with money that is far deeper and more important than receiving a regular paycheck or carefully balancing our accounts. Money can cause us significant pain and conflict. Money can also help us reach goals and enjoy life. More than likely, you have some complicated thoughts and feelings around money. That’s why we’re looking for discernment from Proverbs to create a healthy perspective on money.

How can we as Christians in the United States help people in need around the world? It's easy for us to make a list of all the ways we can go to other countries, especially third world countries, and solve many of their problems. But can we really solve their "problems"? Are we even asking them what they actually need from us? There's no lack of scripture exhorting believers to be generous to the poor and help those in need. But what do they actually need? What does the Church in America have to offer? What do we hear when we ask others what they need and we truly listen?

Have you found yourself working hard doing research on a purchase or planning a trip only to eventually see your decisions prove less than you imagined? Decision-making can be a complex and anxious experience depending on the gravity and consequence of the decision. When you include the desire to do God’s will and the desire to use wisdom to avoid pitfalls, the stakes feel high, and some decisions can feel daunting. Today, Proverbs will give us a good perspective about obtaining wisdom, avoiding foolishness and potentially reducing our tension.

Do you think of sexuality as more of a problem or a privilege. Consider how a biblical view of sexuality reveals it is a good-news, gospel-kind of privilege to be a woman, to be a man, and to enjoy the sexual part of our human experience. Our sexuality requires both form and freedom to maximize our pleasure and avoid pain. Your sexuality is a mysterious, wonderful, and powerful gift from God for his glory and your blessing. How can we wisely enjoy these blessings? That’s why we want to apply biblical wisdom from Proverbs to our sexuality.

Have you ever done something with good intentions only for the best of your intentions to explode into fire and ash? That is why we all need to keep growing in wisdom. Life is complex. To live successfully, we want to master the ways that people think and communicate, the ways that life rocks and rolls, and the general principles that create predictable responses in most situations.
