Today is Gospels Saturday. We’ll read John chapters 3-4! I’m calling this episode “Born Again - Salvation Beyond Merit.”

Summary of John 3

In John chapter three, Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council, visited Jesus at night. Jesus told him that unless someone is born again, they cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus was puzzled by this concept, as he thought being born into the Jewish race guaranteed a place in God's kingdom. Jesus explained that being born again refers to a spiritual rebirth, which is brought about by the Holy Spirit. He emphasized that human effort alone cannot achieve this new birth.

Jesus clarified that to be born again, one must believe in Him as the Son of God. He spoke of God's love for the world and how He sent His Son to save it. Whoever believes in Jesus will have eternal life, while those who do not believe are already condemned. Believing in Jesus means putting faith and trust in Him, surrendering control of one's life to Him. Jesus, as God Himself, is capable of guiding and lovingly caring for our lives.

The invitation is extended to everyone to invite Jesus into their lives and experience the new birth and eternal life that He offers. He stands at the door, ready to be invited in, bringing hope, purpose, and a relationship with God.

I'm so glad you're with me today. This is the daily show where we're reading through the entire Bible in a year and today is Gospel Saturday. We'll read John chapters 3 and 4. Before we get started, let's have a word of prayer. Our gracious heavenly Father, we thank you for the weekend. And we thank you for blessing us with your Word. And I pray, Lord, that as we read today, you would teach us, that you would touch our hearts and touch our minds. I pray this in Jesus' name, amen. Okay, let's get going.

Steve Webb 0:49John, chapter 3. There was a man named Nicodemus, one of the Pharisees. He was an important Jewish leader. One night he came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a teacher sent from God. No one can do these miraculous signs that you do unless they have God’s help.” Jesus answered, “I assure you, everyone must be born again. Anyone who is not born again cannot be in God’s kingdom.” Nicodemus said, “How can a man who is already old be born again? Can he go back into his mother’s womb and be born a second time?” Jesus answered, “Believe me when I say that everyone must be born from water and the Spirit. Anyone who is not born from water and the Spirit cannot enter God’s kingdom. The only life people get from their human parents is physical. But the new life that the Spirit gives a person is spiritual. Don’t be surprised that I told you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it wants to. You hear it, but you don’t know where it is coming from or where it is going. It is the same with everyone who is born from the Spirit.

Comments on Daniel

The book of Daniel was written during Israel's captivity and contains both historical and prophetic sections. The first six chapters are historical and tell of Daniel's life and his service to various kings, while the last six chapters are prophetic and contain visions of the future, including the coming of the Messiah. Despite the prophetic sections being difficult to understand, they offer hope to the captive Jews that God still had a plan for them.

In chapter 4 of Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar, who was once a proud and haughty king, gives praise to God near the end of his life. This serves as a reminder that God can reach anyone, even those who seem beyond His reach. The author shares a personal story of how he prayed for his unbelieving father for years before a neighbor was finally able to bring him to the Lord. This story encourages readers to not give up on their loved ones and to continue praying and being faithful because God loves them even more than we do.

Steve Webb 0:49All right, how about a brief introduction to the book of Daniel? The book of Ezekiel, which we completed last week showed us prophecies of the beginning of Israel's captivity. Daniel's book is of the latter years of their captivity. The visions God gave Ezekiel were meant to be a comfort to the Jews in the midst of their captivity. And the same is true of Daniel's vision as their captivity dragged on. Knowing that God was still speaking to them and had plans for them was surely something that helped them make it through. Now, Daniel is considered to be one of the most prominent prophets. He lived in the courts of some of the greatest kings, Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus, and Darius. The first six chapters of the book are historical and pretty easy to understand. The last six chapters are of a prophetic nature and not so easy to understand, but they do speak clearly of the coming Greek and Roman kingdoms, and of the coming Messiah. So with that introduction, let's begin.

I pray Lord today that you would teach us wisdom. Bless us as we read today in Jesus' name, amen. Okay, let's begin.

Steve Webb 0:39Proverbs, chapter 16. The reflections of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the Lord evaluates the motives. Commit your activities to the Lord, and your plans will be achieved. The Lord has prepared everything for His purpose — even the wicked for the day of disaster. Everyone with a proud heart is detestable to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished. Wickedness is atoned for by loyalty and faithfulness, and one turns from evil by the fear of the Lord. When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. Better a little with righteousness than great income with injustice. A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps. God’s verdict is on the lips of a king; his mouth should not give an unfair judgment. Honest balances and scales are the Lord’s; all the weights in the bag are His concern. Wicked behavior is detestable to kings, since a throne is established through righteousness. Righteous lips are a king’s delight, and he loves one who speaks honestly. A king’s fury is a messenger of death, but a wise man appeases it. When a king’s face lights up, there is life; his favor is like a cloud with spring rain. Get wisdom — how much better it is than gold! And get understanding — it is preferable to silver. The highway of the upright avoids evil; the one who guards his way protects his life. Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall. Better to be lowly of spirit with the humble than to divide plunder with the proud. The one who understands a matter finds success, and the one who trusts in the Lord will be happy. Anyone with a wise heart is called discerning, and pleasant speech increases learning. Insight is a fountain of life for its possessor, but the discipline of fools is folly. Comments on Psalm 93 and 94

Psalm 94 acknowledges God as the God of vengeance, recognizing that vengeance in the hands of humans can be negative because it is often not based on perfect justice. However, the author of the psalm implores God to let his glorious justice shine forth and punish the evil who wrong the innocent. While many people in our culture do not like to acknowledge that there is evil in the world or that ultimate punishment should be meted out, the author of Psalm 94 recognizes that God has the right to judge those who injure or wrong the innocent. 

On the other hand, Psalm 95 is a call for us to joyfully sing and shout to the Lord, recognizing Him as our shepherd who watches over us. The psalmist acknowledges that it is humbling that the Holy and Righteous God who created everything takes note of us. But they are reminded that God is love and that he gave his one and only Son to save the world through him. This is a call for us to kneel before Him and trust that we will be safe under His care. The psalmist is in awe of God's infinite greatness and acknowledges how wonderful His name is.

Steve Webb 0:46Introduction to Psalm 93. This Psalm has no title but of Psalm 93. James Montgomery boys wrote, Psalm 93 describes a theocracy as do the seven psalms that follow it. The words Yahweh Mielec, or Jehovah reigns or Jehovah is king, are the watchwords of these theocratic songs. Now, as we know most if not all, theocracies that have existed or exist today become miserable failures because they're instituted And enforced by man, flawed human beings. Only a theocracy with the perfect just loving And merciful God will ever be successful.

Today is History Tuesday, and we’ll begin the book of 1 Chronicles with chapters 1-4. I’m calling this episode “The Prayer of Jabez and the Power of Asking.”

Episode Summary

The first chapter of 1 Chronicles starts with Adam and goes through the generations to Noah, where all the different nations and races originated from. The Old Testament mainly focuses on Abraham's line, the Jewish people, who were chosen by God to teach them how to worship Him and show other nations what true worship is. As the genealogies continue in the coming chapters, there will be a lot of history, from Judah to David and his son Solomon, through all the kings up until Jerusalem was destroyed.

Chapter two has some important men and women listed, including Judah, Israel, Boaz, Jesse, and David. While some are remembered as the first to settle certain towns and regions, two are remembered throughout time for their sins. Jabez is introduced in chapter four as a man who was more honorable than his brothers. He asked God to bless him and give him more territory, and God granted his request. This shows that it is okay to ask God for things and that when one asks out of a pure heart, and their request is pleasing to Him, it is a good thing.

Steve concludes by saying that each person must decide how much to give in their heart, and they should not give reluctantly or because of pressure. He quotes 2 Corinthians 9:7, which says that God loves a person who gives cheerfully, and that God will generously provide all you need.

When Moses was on Mount Sinai, the Lord told him to say to the community of Israel: After you enter the land that I am giving you, it must be allowed to rest one year out of every seven. You may raise grain and grapes for six years, but the seventh year you must let your fields and vineyards rest in honor of me, your Lord. This is to be a time of complete rest for your fields and vineyards, so don't harvest anything they produce. However, you and your slaves and your hired workers, as well as any domestic or wild animals, may eat whatever grows on its own. Once every 49 years on the tenth day of the seventh month, which is also the Great Day of Forgiveness, trumpets are to be blown everywhere in the land. This fiftieth year is sacred—it is a time of freedom and of celebration when everyone will receive back their original property, and slaves will return home to their families. In the second chapter of 2 Thessalonians, Paul warns the church not to panic when people claim that Jesus has already returned. He emphasizes that there are things that must happen before the Lord's return, and it's crucial for believers to fulfill the Great Commission by making disciples and obeying Jesus' teachings. While it's important to be aware of the signs that indicate the end times, focusing solely on the return of Jesus can lead believers astray and negatively impact their lives and the lives of their followers.

One of the signs that Paul points out is the rise of the man of sin, who will oppose everything that is called God and set himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself as God. The world seems to be ready for this figure, with many turning away from God and religion. Despite the likelihood of the man of sin's arrival, believers should continue to focus on their mission of making disciples and living in a way that reflects the peace and hope they have in knowing Jesus.

Steve Webb 0:422 Thessalonians, chapter 1. I, Paul, am writing this letter. Silas and Timothy join me in writing. We are sending this letter to you, the members of the church in Thessalonica. You belong to God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. May God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. Brothers and sisters, we should always thank God for you. That is only right, because your faith is growing more and more. The love you all have for each other is increasing. So among God's churches we brag about the fact that you don't give up easily. We brag about your faith in all the suffering and testing you are going through. All of this proves that when God judges, he is fair. So you will be considered worthy to enter God's kingdom. I consider John 1 as the clearest declaration of the deity of Jesus. The chapter begins by echoing the opening of Genesis, stating "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Later, it says "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us," affirming Jesus' divine nature.

In John 2, Jesus drives out the money changers from the Temple. This is one of two instances in the Bible where Jesus does this. The money changers extorted money from people who came to worship God by exchanging foreign money at inflated prices and by selling sacrificial animals at high prices. Jesus drove them out because they were operating from a motive of greed and exploiting those who came to the Temple to worship God.

It is important to note that supporting those who proclaim the gospel is a biblical principle, as established in Mosaic Law and reiterated by Paul in the New Testament.

Today's Gospel Saturday, and we'll begin the book of John by reading the first two chapters. Before we get started, let's have a word of prayer. Our heavenly Father, we thank you so much for your Word, and especially we thank you for the book of John. As we read today, I pray, Lord, that you would open our minds touch our hearts and give us something that we can apply to our lives today. I pray this in Jesus' name, amen. Okay, let's get going.

Steve Webb 0:46John, chapter 1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. Today is Prophecy Friday, and we’ll complete the book of  Ezekiel with the reading of chapters 43-48. I’m calling the episode “The Future Temple.”

Comments on Ezekiel 43-48

These chapters are rich in detail, so I will only touch on a few generalities.

Because of the level of detail given, the temple that Ezekiel describes appears to be one that will certainly be built at some time in the future...Ezekiel's future and ours. To this date, this temple has not yet been built. The measurements are unlike any others.

Nowhere in the description of the temple are there instructions to build it, as there was with previous temples. The measurements given are the measurements that were taken of this already existing temple in Ezekiel's vision. Thus, it is more than likely that God Himself is the builder, and that this temple is the temple that will exist in the Millennial Kingdom during Jesus' thousand year reign on Earth after his second coming.

The identity of the prince who is spoken of is not made explicitly clear. There are some who think it is David. Others believe it is Jesus. 

Ezekiel 45:22 says that the prince must make a sin offering. Ezekiel 46:16 says the prince has sons. So in my estimation, the prince is not Jesus.

Ezekiel 37:25 says that David would be a prince over Israel, along with several other verses in Ezekiel, Isaiah, Jeremiah and Hosea. From these verses, it appears more than likely that the prince will indeed be David. 

To me, the most exciting thing about these last chapters in the book of Ezekiel is that this is something that those of us whose trust is in Jesus will actually see this temple, in all of the splendor described in its pages. We will see God's glory in this place, and hear His voice. How marvelous and awe inspiring that will be!

The visions were like the vision which I saw by the River Chebar; and I fell on my face. And the glory of the Lord came into the temple by way of the gate which faces toward the east. The Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court; and behold, the glory of the Lord filled the temple. Then I heard Him speaking to me from the temple, while a man stood beside me.

In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidenceand his children have a refuge.

In doing background study on these chapters that are so full of wisdom, I came upon some notes by Joseph Parker in “The People’s Bible”. Here are some excerpts of his comments:

“In no book probably is the fear of the Lord so elaborately described as to its nature and its application as the book of Proverbs. Throughout the whole of the Bible the fear of the Lord is declared to be the beginning of wisdom. It is not a servile fear; the worshiper here is not a croucher, waiting in an abject position in order to be noticed by a tyrannical despot: fear means reference, veneration, awe, a sense of the grandeur and majesty of the Lord, not only as that term stands for infinity, brilliance, and attributes of an intellectual kind, but as it stands for holiness, truth, purity, justice, and every expression that indicates moral supremacy. 

He who fears the Lord is strong in the confidence of ultimate justice; he is confident also in the final exposition of Providence, being assured that the way of God to man will be so revealed at last that it will be seen to have been the right way, the only true way, notwithstanding the varieties of the road, the steep hills, the bleak deserts, the stony paths, the cold rivers that had to be crossed in the dark night, the afflictions that had to be endured when the heart and flesh had failed and strength had been exhausted —at the last it will be seen that God has not given one stroke too much, taken away one treasure too many, or dug one grave too deep; the righteous will be the first to confess that God has done all things wisely, well, and lovingly.

A beautiful expression is “his children.” Here in the very midst of the Proverbs we find the sublime doctrine of the fatherhood of God. Here too we find that God's children need a place of refuge; they have often to flee from the storm, from the wrath of man, and from an apparently angry nature, for every law seems to fight against them; blessed be God, when all outward things are marked by an excitement of an apparently uncontrollable kind, are heaving and tossing as if shaken by an earthquake, the children of God can go not to law but to the lawmaker himself, yea, to the very heart of God, and there can rest in hope and confidence, and while the storm howls without around the rock of the sanctuary, that holy place can be filled with sacred and triumphant song. Have we really endeavored to find a refuge in God?”

There are many places where the fear of the Lord is spoken of. Remember Joseph Parker’s beautiful words the next time you read the phrase “the fear of the Lord.”
