Summary

In 2 Chronicles 6-7, Solomon completes the construction of the Temple, which his father David had originally planned but was unable to build. The dedication of the Temple is marked by a joyful time of sacrifice and celebration lasting seven days. Solomon offers a prayer of dedication, asking God to forgive the people if they ever stray from Him but later rededicate themselves. In chapter seven, God appears to Solomon and responds to his prayer, promising that if the people humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from wickedness, He will hear their prayers, forgive their sins, and heal their land. Solomon also mentions that even foreigners who pray towards the Temple will be heard by God. The promise of God's forgiveness and healing applies to all who sincerely seek Him. By confessing our sins, turning to Him, and humbling ourselves, we can experience the fulfillment of God's promise to heal our land.

Our gracious heavenly Father, how we thank You for Your Word. and we pray, Lord, that as we read today, you would bless us, teach us touch our hearts. I pray this in Jesus name, Amen. All right, let's begin.

Steve Webb 0:27Second Chronicles chapter six. Then Solomon said, Yahweh has said that he would dwell in the thick darkness, but I have built you a house and home a place for you to dwell in forever. The king turned his face and blessed all the assembly of Israel, and all the assembly of Israel stood. He said, bless it be your way, the God of Israel who spoke with his mouth to David my father, and has with his hands fulfilled it saying, since the day that I brought my people out of the land of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build a house in that my name might be there. and I chose no man to be Prince over my people Israel. But now I have chosen Jerusalem that my name might be there. and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel. Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel. But he always said to David, my father, whereas it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart. Nevertheless, you shall not build the house, but your son who will come out of your body, he shall build the house for my name. Yahweh has performed his word that he spoke for I have risen up in the place of David, my father, and I sit on the throne of Israel as y'all way promised, and have built the house for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel. There I have set the ark in which is you always covenant which he made with the children of Israel. He stood before Yahweh his altar in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands, for Solomon had made a bronze scaffold, five cubits long and five cubits wide in three cubits high, and had set it in the middle of the court.

Before we read, let's pray. Our heavenly Father, we thank you for this day and the opportunity to gather around your Word. Bless our time of reading today, we pray that you would teach us in Jesus' name, Amen. All right, let's begin.

Steve Webb 0:29Numbers, chapter 25. While Israel stayed at Shittim, the people were not faithful to the Lord and began to have sex with the daughters of Moab. They asked the people of Israel to bring gifts to their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor, and the Lord was angry with Israel. The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people, kill them, and put their bodies in the bright daylight before the Lord. Then the strong anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.” So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal of Peor.” Then one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family. Moses and all the people of Israel saw this while they were crying at the door of the meeting tent. When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the religious leader, saw it, he rose up from among the people. He took a spear in his hand and went after the man of Israel into the tent. Then he cut through the bodies of both the man of Israel and the woman. So the very bad disease that spread on the people of Israel was stopped. Those who died because of this bad disease were 24,000. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the religious leader, has turned My anger away from the people of Israel. He was jealous with My jealousy among them, so I did not destroy the people of Israel in My jealousy. So say to them that I make My agreement of peace with Phinehas. It will be an agreement for him and his children after him that they will always be religious leaders, because he was jealous for his God, and did what he was to do to pay for the sin of the people of Israel.” The name of the man of Israel who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri the son of Salu. He was a leader of a father’s house among the Simeonites. The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur. Zur was the head of the people of a father’s house in Midian. The Lord said to Moses, “Be angry at the Midianites and fight against them.

And the sun is the radiance of His glory, And the representation of his essence. And he sustains all things by his powerful word. And so when he had accomplished cleansing for sins, He sat down to the right hand of the Majesty on high, And thus he became so far better than the angels as he had inherited a name superior to theirs. For two, which of the angels did God ever say, You are my son today I have fathered you. And in another place, he says, I will be his father And he will be my son. But when he again brings his firstborn into the world, he says, Let all the angels of God worship Him. Steve Webb 1:03John, chapter 19. Then Pilate ordered that Jesus be taken away and whipped. The soldiers made a crown from some thorny branches and put it on Jesus’ head and put a purple robe around him. Then they came to him many times and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and hit him in the face. Again Pilate came out and said to them, “Look, I am bringing Jesus out to you. I want you to know that I find nothing against him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!” When the leading priests and the guards saw Jesus, they shouted, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” But Pilate answered, “Crucify him yourselves, because I find nothing against him.” The leaders answered, “We have a law that says he should die, because he said he is the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid. He went back inside the palace and asked Jesus, “Where do you come from?” But Jesus did not answer him. Pilate said, “You refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know I have power to set you free and power to have you crucified?” Jesus answered, “The only power you have over me is the power given to you by God. The man who turned me in to you is guilty of a greater sin.” After this, Pilate tried to let Jesus go. But some in the crowd cried out, “Anyone who makes himself king is against Caesar. If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar.” When Pilate heard what they were saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at the place called The Stone Pavement. (In the Hebrew language the name is Gabbatha.) It was about noon on Preparation Day of Passover week. Pilate said to the crowd, “Here is your king!” They shouted, “Take him away!

Steve Webb 0:55Amos, chapter 5. Listen to this funeral song I am ready to sing about you, family of Israel: “The virgin Israel has fallen down and will not get up again. She is abandoned on her own land with no one to help her get up.” The sovereign Lord says this: “The city that marches out with a thousand soldiers will have only a hundred left; the town that marches out with a hundred soldiers will have only ten left for the family of Israel.” The Lord says this to the family of Israel: “Seek me so you can live! Do not seek Bethel! Do not visit Gilgal! Do not journey down to Beer Sheba! For the people of Gilgal will certainly be carried into exile; and Bethel will become a place where disaster abounds.” Seek the Lord so you can live! Otherwise he will break out like fire against Joseph’s family; the fire will consume and no one will be able to quench it and save Bethel. The Israelites turn justice into bitterness; they throw what is fair and right to the ground. (But there is one who made the constellations Pleiades and Orion; he can turn the darkness into morning and daylight into night. He summons the water of the seas and pours it out on the earth’s surface. The Lord is his name! He flashes destruction down upon the strong so that destruction overwhelms the fortified places.) The Israelites hate anyone who arbitrates at the city gate; they despise anyone who speaks honestly. Therefore, because you make the poor pay taxes on their crops and exact a grain tax from them, you will not live in the houses you built with chiseled stone, nor will you drink the wine from the fine vineyards you planted. Certainly I am aware of your many rebellious acts and your numerous sins. You torment the innocent, you take bribes, and you deny justice to the needy at the city gate. It’s  Poetry Thursday, and we’ll read Proverbs 25. I’m calling this episode “Love Your Enemies?“

Summary

Proverbs 25, along with the following chapters, contains a collection of proverbs attributed to King Solomon. These proverbs were compiled by King Hezekiah of Judah, approximately 270 years after Solomon's death. One of the verses in Proverbs 25, verse 21, encourages kindness towards enemies by providing food and water to those in need. The subsequent verse, verse 22, has been subject to various interpretations. Some suggest that it refers to a burning conviction experienced by the enemy when they receive kindness, while others propose the idea of lending a burning coal to help them start a fire. Regardless of how the enemy perceives this act, the focus of the proverb is on the responsibility of being kind to enemies. This aligns with the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 5:43-47, where he encourages love and prayers for enemies. Although it may not be easy, believers are called to love their enemies and can rely on the Holy Spirit for the ability to do so. Love is not solely based on emotions but is demonstrated through actions. By choosing to act in loving ways, bridges can be built even in difficult relationships.

I'll tell you more about my surgery a bit later in the show. Plus I got some information. I've got an ept… I've got an update on Cassie's surgery as well. Before we read, let's pray. Our heavenly Father, we love you and we thank you for your Word. We thank you, Lord, for telling us about yourself in the Word. As we read today, I pray that you would bless us I pray that you would teach us and touch our hearts. I pray this in Jesus' precious name. Amen. All right, are you ready? Let's begin.

Steve Webb 1:16Proverbs, chapter 25. These are more proverbs of Solomon, compiled by the men of Hezekiah king of Judah: It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings. As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable. Remove the dross from the silver, and a silversmith can produce a vessel; remove wicked officials from the king’s presence, and his throne will be established through righteousness. Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence, and do not claim a place among his great men; it is better for him to say to you, “Come up here,” than for him to humiliate you before his nobles. What you have seen with your eyes do not bring hastily to court, for what will you do in the end if your neighbor puts you to shame?

Today is Psalms Wednesday. We’ll read chapter 111-113. I’ll have a brief introduction before reading each chapter, and after the reading I’ll have some comments. And of course I’ll have an “On This Date In Church History” segment for you, too. I’m calling today’s episode  “I Will."

Comments on Psalm 112

Praise the Lord! I will praise the Lord with my whole heart, In the assembly of the upright and in the congregation.

Psalm 112: 1 NKJV

Notice the psalmist says, "I will praise the Lord...". He does not say, "I feel like praising the Lord...". It is an act of will, not an emotion. 

Face it, sometimes we do not feel like praising the Lord. Maybe we have had a difficult week, or we've been on the outs with our spouse, or money ran out before the month did. Or maybe we are just in a dry spell with the Lord. 

Does any of that change who God is? Of course not. No matter what happens in our own life, God is still God. He is still worthy of praise, and when we decide that we *will* praise the Lord with our whole heart, 99 times out of 100, our emotions will be lifted up as we lift up the name of the Lord. I know, because I have experienced it myself, and have talked to others who agree.

When you are feeling down, or afraid, or lonely, or like God doesn't hear you, praise the Lord with your whole heart. 

Remember the old milk commercial? Milk. It does a body good.

Let's change it up. Praise. It does a spirit good.

Like my dad used to say, I'm just tickled to see ya. This is the daily show where we're reading through the entire Bible in a year. Today is Psalms Wednesday. We'll read chapters 111 through 113. I'll have a brief introduction before reading each chapter and after the reading, I'll have some comments. Steve Webb 1:00Psalm 111, like the rest of the Psalms we have today, has no title or author attribution. Psalm 111 is an acrostic which means that in Hebrew each of the twenty-two lines begins with successive letters except for the first line which begins with the Hebrew word "Hallelujah" or in English "Praise the Lord." Being an acrostic makes the psalm easier to memorize - if you speak Hebrew.

The works of the Lord are great, Studied by all who have pleasure in them. His work is honorable and glorious, And His righteousness endures forever. He has declared to His people the power of His works, In giving them the heritage of the nations. The works of His hands are verity and justice; All His precepts are sure. It's History Tuesday and we'll begin the book of 2 Chronicles with a reading of chapters 1 through 5. Steve Webb 0:512 Chronicles, chapter 1. Solomon son of David strengthened his hold on his kingdom. The Lord his God was with him and highly exalted him. Then Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to every leader in all Israel — the heads of the families. Solomon and the whole assembly with him went to the high place that was in Gibeon because God’s tent of meeting, which the Lord’s servant Moses had made in the wilderness, was there. Now David had brought the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the place he had set up for it, because he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem, but he put the bronze altar, which Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, had made, in front of the Lord’s tabernacle. Solomon and the assembly inquired of Him there. Solomon offered sacrifices there in the Lord’s presence on the bronze altar at the tent of meeting; he offered 1,000 burnt offerings on it. That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him: “Ask. What should I give you?” And Solomon said to God: “You have shown great and faithful love to my father David, and You have made me king in his place. Lord God, let Your promise to my father now come true. For You have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth. Now grant me wisdom and knowledge so that I may lead these people, for who can judge this great people of Yours?” God said to Solomon, “Since this was in your heart, and you have not requested riches, wealth, or glory, or for the life of those who hate you, and you have not even requested long life, but you have requested for yourself wisdom and knowledge that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king, wisdom and knowledge are given to you. I will also give you riches, wealth, and glory, unlike what was given to the kings who were before you, or will be given to those after you.” So Solomon went to Jerusalem from the high place that was in Gibeon in front of the tent of meeting,

It’s the Law Monday, and we’ll read Numbers 21-24. I’m calling this episode “Balaam’s Eager Disobedience.“

Summary

In Numbers 22, the story revolves around Balaam and Balak. Balak sends messengers to Balaam, urging him to come and curse the Israelites. At first, God instructs Balaam not to go because He has blessed the Israelites. However, Balak sends more distinguished messengers, tempting Balaam with promises of great honor and wealth. Although Balaam outwardly declares his loyalty to God, he expresses his willingness to see if God has any other instructions. This reveals a temptation within him. God grants Balaam permission to go with the men if they come to call him. However, Balaam acts out of eagerness and disobeys by immediately getting up and going with them. This eagerness, coupled with his pursuit of personal gain, angers God. God does not look favorably upon those who conspire to harm His people, and Balaam's actions go against God's instructions.

In Numbers 24, Balaam disappoints Balak once again, but he remains faithful to delivering the message God has given him. This narrative teaches us an important lesson. Despite our failures and sins, we can turn back to God, confess our wrongdoings, and continue to serve His purposes. Our credibility may feel tarnished, but by seeking forgiveness and allowing God to use us, we can still be effective instruments for Him. It is vital not to let the enemy discourage us or rob us of the blessings that come from following God's will. Throughout the Bible, we see imperfect individuals who failed at times, yet God accomplished His will through them. The same applies to us if we persevere, remain faithful, and do not give up or give in to despair.

Steve Webb 1:01In this letter, Paul is writing to a man named Philemon whom he had previously brought to the Lord. Paul's writing about an escaped slave named Onesimus. Onesimus had been a slave of Philemon's and had apparently taken some of Philemon's belongings when he ran away.

Steve Webb 1:22Philemon, chapter 1. From Paul, who is a prisoner for the cause of Christ Jesus, and our brother Timothy. To Philemon our dearly loved coworker, Apphia our sister, Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church that meets in your house. May the grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Philemon, I thank my God every time I mention you in my prayers because I’ve heard of your love and faithfulness, which you have both for the Lord Jesus and for all God’s people. I pray that your partnership in the faith might become effective by an understanding of all that is good among us in Christ. I have great joy and encouragement because of your love, since the hearts of God’s people are refreshed by your actions, my brother. Therefore, though I have enough confidence in Christ to command you to do the right thing, I would rather appeal to you through love. I, Paul—an old man, and now also a prisoner for Christ Jesus— appeal to you for my child Onesimus. I became his father in the faith during my time in prison. He was useless to you before, but now he is useful to both of us. I’m sending him back to you, which is like sending you my own heart.
