If you’ve ever thought, “I don’t even know what to do next,” you’re closer to wisdom than you think. We take Proverbs 4 seriously as a blueprint for Christian living, starting with Solomon’s backstory: a young, inexperienced leader who asked God for wisdom instead of pretending he already had it. That single decision ripples through the whole book of Proverbs and it can reshape how we make decisions today. 

We also push back on a loud message in our culture: “Look inside yourself and you’ll find the path.” Proverbs tells a different story. Wisdom is something we receive from the Lord, and James 1:5 makes it plain that God gives wisdom generously when we ask in faith. A tiny mustard seed turning into a sheltering tree. A pinch of leaven working through enough dough to feed a crowd. We love how Jesus uses ordinary, earthy pictures to describe the kingdom of God, because they confront our craving for spectacle and remind us that real spiritual growth often starts quietly. We talk through Luke 13:18-35 and trace how the gospel begins small, then spreads through a life until it reshapes priorities, character, and fruit.

Then the tone sharpens with a question that still hits hard: will the saved be few? Jesus doesn’t give a headcount. He gives a warning and an invitation: strive to enter through the narrow door. A familiar verse can become background noise until life turns the volume back up. After Pastor Mark returns from vacation, we open Proverbs 3 and sit with the line many of us memorized long ago: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” Not part of your heart. Some moments expose how we really think about God: a tragedy, a diagnosis, a sudden loss, a story we can’t explain. We bring that tension to Luke 13:1–17, where Jesus refuses the easy conclusion that suffering proves someone was “worse.” Instead, he turns the mirror toward every listener and presses a clear, urgent word: repent. Not fear driven panic, but a real turning back to God while there is still time.

Wisdom doesn’t arrive by accident, and it rarely comes in a neat, distraction-free package. A lot of us can read “be ready” and instantly picture a frantic spiritual sprint. Jesus paints something quieter and tougher: lamps lit, sleeves rolled up, a servant doing the work in front of them as if the Master could walk in at any moment. We open Luke 12:35 through the end of the chapter and talk about why readiness is a daily posture, not an emotional spike, and why a watchful life is actually a freer life.

From there, we get honest about stewardship and accountability. Jesus’ words about the faithful manager and the careless servant land on our calendars, our money, our relationships, and our integrity. “From everyone who has been given much, much will be required” becomes more than a quote, it becomes a mirror. We wrestle with what it looks like to serve people instead of using them, to stay faithful when no one’s watching, and to treat everyday responsibilities like spiritual assignments.

Grief hits the early church like a wave, and Acts 8 refuses to skip past it. Stephen is gone, the pressure rises, and believers are forced to scatter. We sit with that reality and talk honestly about what it’s like when you’re trying to walk faithfully and life still hurts.

From there, we trace a surprising theme: providential persecution. What looks like setback becomes spread. The gospel moves outward through ordinary people, including Philip, and we connect that to the hard seasons many of us know well: job loss, family change, unwanted transitions, and the kind of disruption that makes you ask what God is doing. We also talk about persistent proclamation and why believers around the world who face real persecution can expose how comfortable faith in America can become.

Then the passage gets even more personal. The Holy Spirit’s work in Samaria raises questions that require careful Bible study and context, not quick assumptions. And Simon the magician forces a heart check: he “believes” and gets baptized, yet still tries to buy God’s power. A missed handwashing ritual kicks off one of Jesus’ sharpest warnings about religious hypocrisy, and it lands uncomfortably close to home. We’re in Luke 11:33-54 and the opening of Luke 12, watching Jesus recline at a Pharisee’s table, read the room perfectly, and expose the gap between polished religious behavior and a heart still driven by greed, pride, and image management. 

We unpack the “woes” Jesus speaks to the Pharisees and why they still matter for Christians today: tithing tiny details while neglecting justice and the love of God, craving the best seats, and quietly becoming spiritual hazards to the people around them. Then the spotlight turns to the experts in the law, where legalism takes center stage. When leaders pile extra requirements onto faith, they don’t just burden people, they block the door, “taking away the key to knowledge” and discouraging those who are trying to draw near to God. 

Luke frames this whole confrontation with the language of light and darkness, and we lean into that tension. Jesus calls hypocrisy a kind of leaven that spreads, and He reminds us that what’s hidden will be revealed.
