  • Vapor of Vapors
This message opens a study of Ecclesiastes, written near the end of Solomon's life, a book Kent calls most unusual and often misunderstood. Solomon wants us to understand the obvious: how fast life passes and how we should live in light of it. Kent explains that the Hebrew word hebel means vapor, not "meaningless," and walks through three pictures in Ecclesiastes 1:2–11: our life is like the steam off a cup of hot coffee (vv. 2–3), the world is like a treadmill that cycles but never arrives (vv. 4–8), and our life is written on a chalkboard, erased and eventually forgotten (vv. 9–11). Along the way he draws on his own childhood memories, C. S. Lewis, Augustine and H. B. Charles. The application is that meaning is found not under the sun but in looking above the sun to God's Son. We are urged to "live life backwards," keeping our certain death before us so that each day counts, as a reason to be wise and not to despair.

  • Ordained Authority
The sermon explores the principle of submission to God-ordained authority as a method for determining the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God. Drawing primarily from Romans 13, the message argues that believers should set personal boundaries and standards not based on individual preference, but in recognition of positions established by divine order. This principle is applied across various spheres of life, including secular governance, marriage, family dynamics, and church ministry. The speaker emphasizes that honoring these ordained roles—such as parents providing for children or pastors teaching the Word—allows God to work through His appointed structures. Ultimately, the sermon calls for a posture of respectful submission that acknowledges God's sovereign design in societal and relational hierarchies.

  • Otherworldly Authority
The sermon explores the supreme authority of Jesus Christ as demonstrated in the synagogue at Capernaum, emphasizing that His words possess a wholly and uniquely authoritative power distinct from that of the scribes. By analyzing the exorcism of an unclean spirit, the message illustrates how the light of Jesus' truth exposes and casts out darkness, revealing His identity as the Holy One of God. The preacher contrasts the fate of Capernaum, which heard but did not obey, with the call for believers to submit to Christ's commands rather than merely observing them. This exposition serves as a pastoral exhortation to recognize Jesus as the ultimate King whose words sustain the universe and defeat spiritual forces, urging the audience to live in active obedience to His revealed truth.
