  • Embracing Growth Beyond Our Comfort Zones (2 Corinthians 12:9)

    When faced with ministry opportunities that make us feel insecure or uncomfortable, our first instinct can be to run away and say, “No!” But what if those uncomfortable moments are actually opportunities for God to grow us? This seminar explores how we can love God and others by being willing to step outside our comfort zones.

    I. Examine why we say no to serving outside our comfort zones

    a. Our excuses include I don't know how, the idol of comfort, fear of failure or criticism, comparing ourselves to others, and I'm just not gifted in that way.
    b. Many of these excuses involve a love of self, but we are already loved in Christ, so we are free to love God and others and do hard things.
    c. Rely on God's power, not our own, like Peter stepping out of the boat, and remember the people who stepped out of their comfort zones to love us.
    II. Our weakness is where God displays his power
    a. Moses and Gideon doubted they could serve God (Exodus 4:10; Judges 6:15), and God showed them his presence and equipped them, as he equips us (Philippians 1:6).
    b. Our sufficiency is from God, and we are jars of clay holding a treasure whose surpassing power belongs to God (2 Corinthians 3:4-6; 2 Corinthians 4:7).
    c. His power is made perfect in weakness, while staying comfortable tempts us to credit our own abilities (2 Corinthians 12:9).
    III. Growth often comes after we obey, not before
    a. We don't need to serve only where we feel gifted; we need obedience and a willing heart to love God and love others.
    b. Volunteers who stepped into new roles, and Erin herself in more than 20 years of teaching, have seen God grow their dependence on him and their understanding of Scripture.
    IV. Take the next step, following Jesus
    a. Pray, keep your eyes and heart open for opportunities to serve, and get help from fellow volunteers and leadership.
    b. Jesus is our ultimate example, leaving the comforts of heaven and sacrificing himself on the cross for our sins.

  • For Such a Time As This: Partnering with Parents during the Formative Years (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)

    The early years are BIG years! Children’s Ministry volunteers have the privilege of serving children during this formative season as they learn, grow, and discover who God is. How can we come alongside parents and help their families thrive in Christ? Come explore practical ways we can partner with parents and point little hearts toward Jesus.

    I. Setting the Stage: Our Role Alongside Parents

    a. Parents are called to teach their children God’s Word day in and day out (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)
    b. Children’s ministry servants support and partner with parents, serving both the children and the parents
    II. The 4/14 Window: How Spiritually Formative These Years Are
    a. Ages four to fourteen are especially open to the gospel and to forming a worldview
    b. There is no formula for passing on faith, but each Sunday children are placed in God’s pathways of grace
    III. Stewarding the Time We Have
    a. Move toward parents and children in love: learn their names and stories, and follow up on prayer requests
    b. Serve with excellence and sacrifice: be equipped, be trained, and be a good teammate
    c. Exemplify transformed lives, because teaching comes in many forms (Titus 2)
