On the program this week, two interviews touching on two recent Supreme Court of Canada rulings.

TWU Case: The high court came down with a much-anticipated judgement last Friday, ruling against Trinity Western University’s efforts to open a law school in Langley, BC. The court found that Trinity's so-called “Community Covenant” - which governs the sexual conduct of students and faculty at the institution - discriminated against LGBTQ people. Therefore, the Court said, Law Societies in BC and Ontario were justified in denying students from that proposed law school admission to the bar. There were actually two cases; one from BC, and the other from Ontario. You can read them here and here. ARPA’s Director of Law and Policy, André Schutten - who appeared as an intervener in the case - analyzed the ruling.

Wall Case: And back on May 31st, the Supreme Court issued its ruling in the “Wall Case”, which involved the question of whether secular courts had jurisdiction to insect themselves into the process involved in church discipline and excommunication cases. ARPA lawyer John Sikkema had appeared as an intervener in that case, and he gives some analysis of the ruling.

On the feature this week, ARPA is out with a guide to the Ontario provincial election. While there are no candidate or party endorsements, the guide is designed to provide information to help focus on a number of key issues in the campaign.

RU 486:  As the pro-choice side continues to pressure government to increase the availability of the so-called “morning after” abortion pill, WNAL researcher Anna Nienhuis is out with a blog post highlighting the consistencies and dangers of those demands.

The State of Marriage in Canada:  A new survey shows Canadians are less and less convinced of the importance of marriage as an institution.

On the feature this week, an interview with a Quebec father who’s done some research on the funding for BC’s “Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” (SOGI) program.

That research has uncovered hundreds of thousands of dollars coming from at least two of Canada’s largest chartered banks. Tampier has now started an online petition to try to pressure RBC into eliminating the funding.

“It’s not a right!”:   Mike Schouten from WeNeedaLaw  weighs in on the controversy surrounding MP Ted Falk’s recent outburst in Parliament, in which he shouted at the Prime Minister that abortion is “not a right” in Canada.

Legal updates:  Updates on two legal cases of interest; the Ontario conscience clause suit, and a court challenge to a move to shut down a Christian school in Alberta

Euthanasia in California:  A judge in California has struck down that State’s new euthanasia law, essentially on the grounds that “euthanasia is not health care.”

On the feature this week, a conversation that discounts some of the media narrative about the resolutions that came out of the recent United Conservative Party (UCP) convention in Alberta. There was a lot of media coverage about leader Jason Kenney disavowing a policy resolution that passed; a resolution which allegedly forces the party to "out" children who join Gay-Straight Alliance clubs.

The controversy had some people re-thinking their support for the UCP. But on the feature this week, Donna Trimble of the group "Parents for Choice in Education" presents a considerably different take on what actually happened at that convention.
