1. Believing Before Behaving

Romans 4:3 NASB

For what does the Scripture say? "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS."

Romans 4:9-10 NASB

Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, "FAITH WAS CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS." 10 How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised.

Genesis 15:4-6 NASB

Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir." 5 And He took him outside and said, "Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them." And He said to him, "So shall your descendants be." 6 Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.

2. Circumcision Is A Sign And Seal

Romans 4:11-12 NASB

[…]and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, 

12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.

Ephesians 1:13-14 NASB

In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation -having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.

3. Faith Is Just A Vehicle That brings Us To Gods Grace

Romans 4:13-16 NASB

For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified; 15 for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation. 16 For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

4. Faith Is Always Challenged

Romans 4:19-25 NASB

Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb; 20 yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform. 22 Therefore IT WAS ALSO CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS. 23 Now not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, 24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited,  as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.

We are measured not against human standards but against the unblemished perfect character of God

God’s only purpose in giving the law is so we’d see how sinful we are.

Romans 3:19-20

19 Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God. 20 For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.

God drew clear lines of right and wrong to introduce grace, not wrath


It was always God’s plan to make us right with Him

Romans 3:21

21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago

Faith in Jesus is the Only Way to be Made Right, No Matter Who You Are


Romans 3:22

22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

We all fall short of God’s standard but we still try to justify ourselves

Justification & Grace

Romans 3:24

24 Yet God, in His grace, freely makes us right in His sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when He freed us from the penalty for our sins.

Romans 3:23

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Grace (Charis)

God’s gift that forgives believers and frees them to live new lives by the Spirit

Grace empowers us to serve God and others.

Justification

Romans 3:24

“freely makes us right in His sight”

Justify (Dikaioo): Legal status of Not Guilty. Being declared righteous

Propitiation

God Justifies making us right in His eyes by providing a Sacrifice in our place 



Romans 3:25

25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.

Against God’s Holiness, we’re all off color

Romans 1:1-2  (NLT)

This letter is from Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, chosen by God to be an apostle and sent out to preach His Good News. 2 God promised this Good News long ago through His prophets in the holy Scriptures.

The hero of Paul’s epistle is the Lord Jesus, not a religious system

Romans 1:3  (NLT)

The Good News is about his Son.

Romans 1:4  (NLT)

and He was shown to be the Son of God when He was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus holds everything together…

Colossians 1:17 (NLT)

Everything was created through Him and for Him.

17 He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation together.

Through Christ, God has given us the privilege and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey Him, bringing glory to His name.

ESSENTIAL TRUTH #1:

I am called to belong to Jesus Christ

I am loved by God

ESSENTIAL TRUTH #3:

I am called to be holy as He is holy

who are loved by God and are called to be His own holy people.

You are called, you are loved and you were created to be holy

Only the Power of God displayed in Jesus’ resurrection can rescue me from wrath and self-destruction 

Romans 1:16

For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes 

Only the Power of God displayed in Jesus’ resurrection can make me right in God’s sight

This Good News tells us how God makes us right in His sight.

God does not ask me to behave but to believe

God Condemns Mankind because…

We suppress (hold down) the truth about God, even though it’s obvious 

Romans 1:18-19 (NLT)

But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness.  19 They know the truth about God because He has made it obvious to them.

Romans 1:20  (NLT)

For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see His invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature. 

In God’s eyes, I am without excuse

So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

God condemns mankind because…

We pervert God’s Glory (Holiness) 

We pervert God’s glory when we ignore Him, and refuse to thank Him

Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship Him as God or even give Him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like.

As a result, their minds became dark and confused. 22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. 23 And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

Peace happens when Jesus is with you

Luke 24:36-53 (NIV)

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 

I have God’s PEACE when I have a relationship based on faith

The Peace of God and the 
presence of God are inseparable

I have God’s Peace when I have the reassurance that I am His forever

Jesus reassures us through physical evidence

Luke 24:39 Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself! Touch Me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

Luke 24:40-43 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

Jesus’ sends us out to model repentance & forgiveness

Jesus’ primary mission was to find and restore people into relationship, and rescue them from hell

Instead of a parade, Jesus paved the way with a call for radical repentance and divine forgiveness

Luke 3:3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

Arrival of Holy Spirit was about Repentance & Forgiveness

Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus rebukes unbelief rooted in stubbornness

19 “All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 “What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and You can rebuild it in three days?”

… but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.

5 He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve.6 After that, He was seen by more than 500 of His followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. 7 Then He was seen by James and later by all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw Him.

Jesus Appeared after His death for 40 Days

II.  I receive the Future Promise when I put my faith in the Facts of Easter

The promise is for a life after this one…

25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in Me will live, even after dying.

Easter promises you a life far better than the one you have today.

1 Corinthians 6:14 (NLT)

14 And God will raise us from the dead by His power, just as He raised our Lord from the dead.

I have a treasure stored and waiting for me that no one can touch

1 Peter 1:3b-6 (NLT)

…Now we live with great expectation, 4 and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.

I can endure trials because of the joy ahead

When I embrace the Facts of Easter by Faith, I receive the Future Promise which allows me to then… 

III. Plug into the Force of God’s Power that will transform my life forever 

The power of the resurrection is the power to start over.

I can do more with God’s power than with my willpower

God provided a Substitute for Isaac

Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.

“This is what you are to offer on the altar regularly each day: two lambs a year old. 39 Offer one in the morning and the other at twilight. 40 With the first lamb offer a tenth of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with a quarter of a hin of oil from pressed olives, and a quarter of a hin of wine as a drink offering.

41 Sacrifice the other lamb at twilight with the same grain offering and its drink offering as in the morning—a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord. 42 “For the generations to come this burnt offering is to be made regularly at the entrance to the tent of meeting, before the Lord. On 10th day of the month of Nisan each family chose a lamb to sacrifice


Exodus 12:3 (NIV)

Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. 

Lambs brought to temple on the 10th day were held 4 days for observation

Exodus 12:6 (NIV)

Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.

The Power is in the blood of the lamb

Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the door frames of the houses where they eat the lambs.

After the 4 days of observation, Jesus found innocent by Pilate and Herod (the Court)

Then Pilate called together the leading priests and other religious leaders, along with the people, 14 and he announced his verdict. “You brought this man to me, accusing Him of leading a revolt. I have examined Him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find Him innocent. 15 Herod came to the same conclusion and sent Him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty.
