Caught the Essence But Left Out Some Critical Details
Having both read the book itself and listened to it on Audible, I wanted to see if this abbreviated version might substitute for buying a considerable number of the full books to be able to distribute them to some key decision makers at state level. While this version was passable in catching the essence of the original, it did leave out some fairly important details and lost the flavor of being a well-told story by Ted Koppel. Perhaps the most important detail that was omitted was the failure to recognize Dr. George R. Cotter who played not only a prominent role in the book as one of the experts cited by Koppel but the essence of what he actually said. After all, one might assume that the former Chief Scientist for the National Security Agency might carry some weight in spelling out to politicians, high ranking government officials and the press that cyber conflict is not merely science fiction as some of them still seem to suppose.
~~ A review on the vulnerability of the US power grid ~~
Are you ready if a power station near you goes out? The original book by Ted Koppel is a journalistic report on what could happen if the power grids are attacked. Who is Ted Koppel AKA Edward James Martin Koppel? Ted was the anchor on Nightline from 1980-2005. There are 9 Key Takeways in this Instaread summary. Here are a couple to whet your appetite:
>>>#1 - "US power grids are vulnerable to attacks. These range from physical attacks to cyberattacks that target systems control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems and internet-connected controls used to operate devices remotely, as well as attacks by electromagnetic pulse (EMP).
>>>#7 - "Plans for disaster response in the event of large, persistent power outages are generally incomplete, impractical, and unknown to residents. In most areas, especially metropolitan regions, residents do not often have enough supplies stockpiles to survive a lengthy large-scale outage."
What does CRISP stand for? Key Takeaway #9 talks about the plans the Mormons have in place but does not go into detail. Instaread informs the reader that the author, instead of telling how the attacks would occur, focuses more on the motives of the attackers and the impact of blackouts on communities. Several chapters in the original focus on the strategies of "preppers" and preparation plans of the Mormons.
This Instaread summary is great for what it is, a summary BUT if you want to read/learn some of the 'How To's' and be more informed you are going to want to read the 288 page original. You can only fit so much into a 26 page summary. Important to note that my review is based on the quality of this Instaread review and not the original book. Summary provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz
