Church leaders as early as Augustine used them to teach children and new believers about the Christian faith.  In the centuries following the Reformation, icons and crucifixes on the walls of protestant churches were replaced with the Ten Commandments.  For centuries, if you wanted discipleship instruction you learned three things: the Apostle’s Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Ten Commandments.  How do you live a holy life?  For a long time the whole Western world answered: follow the law of God summarized in the ten commandments. But they seem to have fallen on hard times. They are famous but unknown.
