In Episode 9, Paige explains what a death doula is.

Death doulas can act in many different capacities, and not every death doula offers every type of support surrounding death. End of life is a time when a village is necessary, and death doulas help facilitate and coordinate that village.

Some of the ways death doulas can support include:

Healthy individuals

• Creating a comprehensive end-of-life plan
• Acknowledging and processing fears around mortality

Those with a known cause of death or terminal illness

• Creating a personalized plan that supports their beliefs, values, and aspirations for their ideal death
• Honoring their wishes through emotional and practical support
• Sitting vigil
• Providing respite for loved ones
• Supporting legacy projects

After a death

• Finalizing affairs and providing practical and emotional support to ease the burden of closure around the deceased's personal matters
• Creating meaningful end-of-life celebrations

What if imagining your death bed wasn't about death at all?

This episode was inspired by a recent experience on a plane where someone asked me what advice I would give them as they were on their way to see their dad who was on hospice.

In this episode, I walk through practical and digestible support for 3 stages of hospice — because the way we show up can change depending on where someone is in their dying process.

The advice I would give depends on if their loved one:

• Is awake and eating
• Is spending more time sleeping than awake
• Is no longer waking up

One of the most important things to remember throughout this process is:

This is their death, not yours.

Do your best to honor what they want, what they need, and how they choose to move through this experience — even when it’s different from what you would want. (I know this can be incredibly hard.)

If you have cared for, or are caring for, a dying loved one, please know this:

Your presence is enough.

Positive changes, though exciting, are still a death of what we once knew.

You may wonder whether these new things are truly in your best interest, but really, it could just be that it takes time for us to acclimate.

What I'm exploring in this episode:

• Can we give ourselves grace during times of transition?

• Can we see these moments of transition as opportunities to practice the art of letting go?

• Letting go is one of the hardest things for people to do on their deathbed. If we practice it along the way, will it make the final letting go easier?

Before we get into conversations around death and dying, I felt it was important to introduce accessible, quick practices to help ground the nervous system.

Conversations around transitions can be confronting for some, so I want to encourage awareness of bodily sensations and ways to shake off energy when and if it feels dense.

Some of what is mentioned:

• Journal speak — for more, check out Nicole Sachs
• Tailoring the concept of meditation to your needs and time constraints
• Ways to use elemental energy (air, fire, earth, water) to support releasing energy and returning to self

Wellness rituals can be long and slow, but they can also be done on the go or within the everyday moments of life, which is what I emphasize here.
