We orient ourselves about the fact, yet there are too many faces
Example: more possible chess games on a single chess board than there are atoms in the observable universe. That’s how many branching possibilities you can play than single chess games.
The frame problem - directly associated with perception rather than action
There’s an infinite number of ways to look at a finite object
Why do you see one thing instead of many things
It’s difficult to draw a boundary between the whole and the parts that make up the whole
Interchangeable units of short-term gratification you’re trading yourself what is kin to being a psychopath/narcissist/saddistic - related to short term mating
The orientation of your life, finding someone to use along with you
You forgo the possibility of a long term relationship
⁃ alternative: find someone you can spend the rest of your life with, you can establish a relationship of reciprocal trust with, that you can twine your life with to establish a firm foundation with some probability it will be a successful endeavor
Fundamental of perception: No perception without action or intent. There’s no intent without aim, there’s no aim without value
The world lays itself out to you in consequence of your aim. AIM is motivation, desire.
What do you desire versus what should you desire
You had to orient your perception around an aim. When you go see a movie, or understand someone else, you go to a movie Andy or see a character in them movie in a variety of different situations and attending of their actions in a particular way and what you infer from that is his or her aim. You are there to understand the aim of the character it understand what it’s like to live in a world with that aim.
The portrayal of an aim is a story
As you come to understand the aim and experience the emotions relevant to that aim
Your emotional response to things that impede your aim is negative (confusion, anger etc) things that support your aim is positive (enthusiasm, happiness etc)
You use your body to duplicate the emotions and aim
“Should I adjust my aim?” You have to aim to perceive evaluate and feel emotion and understand. What should you aim at?
“Life is meaningless” aimless- no positive emotion.
“Too many aims”- anxiety, signals unmanaged complexity.
“I want what I want right now”- pursuing immediate gratification. Who is this I that wants? You’re radically immature. 2 year olds are possessed by the desire of the moment. Governance by whim is not a stable solution. Emotionally demonstrative.
The “I” is Integration of desire across time and communally. (“Don’t do something that you will regret or pay for in a week year 5 years etc) enables you to do things such as delayed gratification
They learn to negotiate their identity and take turns. Esp by the age of 3 as kids begin to make friends
Maturation pushes you towards an identity . Because you sacrifice your whim for the sake of the community and your future
If it’s not rectified by age 4, there is no rectifying it. Antisocial or aggressive behavior
The creative achievement questionnaire
55:16 - fundamental motivation of human beings
Cain and Abel - prototypes of satan and Christ
Why do you burn an offering - reduce it to its essence.
God is that which cares about sacrifice. Cain makes sacrifices, but doesn’t bring his best to the table. You don’t do as well when you don’t bring your best to the table. He cuts corners lies cheats steals and fails to walk with god in the garden. Presumption of pride. Cain is miserable dejected demoralized because he is working and nothing goes well for him. He is contrasted with his brother Abel
Abel brings his best to the table. Able the shepherd is a precursor to a shepherd later in the Bible. Protects the vulnerable. Is selfless. He thrives. He sacrifices properly.
