This week on the School Plus Kids Podcast host Arpana welcomes her first guest, Naina.

Naina talks about her week-long school trip in Aberdovey, Wales, where she participated in various activities such as canoeing and hiking. The main objective of the trip was to gain mental and physical strength.

Technology free 

Naina discusses how the camp was an unplugged experience where she had no contact with her family or friends for the whole week. She admits to feeling scared initially but later adjusted to the idea of being without her phone and social media.

Entrepreneurial values 

Upon arrival, Naina and her dorm mates had to climb up a hill with their bags and suitcases. They discovered that their bedding was not set up, so they had to do it themselves. Naina shares that her prior experience of doing her bedding during a family holiday helped her in this situation. She also saw an opportunity to help her friends and charged them with sweets for doing their bedding.

Arpana highlights the importance of entrepreneurship in Naina's experience and how she solved a problem for her friends and charged them for it. Naina reflects on how her mom's teachings on basic business skills and earning money helped her during the trip.

Time in nature

Naina shares that a hike and being in nature were significant experiences for her on the trip. It made her feel peaceful and helped her appreciate life more. She also shares that being able to practice mindfulness in nature was a unique opportunity for her.

The mindfulness pillar

Naina talks about how mindfulness is one of the pillars of the School Plus Kids programme, and it was essential to her growth during the week. She shares that mindfulness helped her stay grounded, especially when things got overwhelming.

Delayed gratification in parenting

Naina reflects on how the teachings and lessons she learned at home came flooding back to her during the trip. She realised that she had to go into survival mode and use everything she had learned to get through the challenges. Nina also shares that she never used to have a growth mindset and would often get anxious and stressed, but the experience helped her gain a new perspective.

Naina's experience at the campsite in Wales was a significant learning opportunity for her. Arpana is proud of Naina's growth and mindful behaviour and happy to see that the values she has been teaching Naina benefitted her when she needed them.

In episode number two of the School Plus Kids podcast, host Arpana will be discussing neuroplasticity and how to develop a growth mindset. Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to change and adapt in response to experiences and learning.

Neuroplasticity and a growth mindset are crucial for children's learning and development. By understanding these concepts, parents can help their children develop healthy habits and stronger connections in their brains, which can lead to success in the future.

Neuroplasticity plays a crucial role in the brain's development and learning abilities, which is particularly significant during developmental stages. Neuroplasticity is highly influenced by experiences and learning, so engaging in new activities and learning new things can help stimulate neuroplasticity.

During the first year of life, the brain doubles in size, and by the age of three, the size of the brain reaches 80% of an adult's brain size. By the age of five, the brain has already reached 90% of an adult brain size. This is why the first five years of life are considered the most important when it comes to learning. More than one million new neural connections are formed every second, which is incredible. While the brain continues to grow and develop, the neurons and parts get stronger until the brain reaches maturity around the age of 22, when the brain is most logical.

By learning the concept of how neurons work in the brain, parents can foster a growth mindset in their child. A fixed mindset is the belief that our abilities and intelligence are fixed and cannot be changed, while a growth mindset is the belief that we can develop our abilities and intelligence through hard work and effort. Children with a fixed mindset may avoid challenges, give up easily, and feel threatened when they see others doing better than they are.

Understanding the concept of neuroplasticity and fostering a growth mindset can help develop resilience and adaptability in children. To develop a growth mindset, children need to believe that they can develop their abilities and intelligence through hard work and effort. By simply adding the word "yet" to the end of the phrase "I can't do this," children can develop a growth mindset. It's important to avoid praising children for their intelligence and instead praise them for their effort and hard work. Repetition and consistency are also crucial when it comes to developing a growth mindset.

Welcome to the first episode of the School Plus Kids Podcast. In this episode host and School Plus Kids founder Arpana will explore the story of how School Plus Kids got started and the journey that led to the creation of the online membership platform. She will also introduce the five key areas of core life skills that School Plus Kids teaches through their masterclasses and that we will cover on the podcast. These are: growth mindset, emotional intelligence, money mindset for kids, entrepreneurship, and mindfulness.

Arpana's journey began in a supermarket with her 5-year-old daughter. She noticed young girls pouring over a magazine and realised how easily influenced young minds can be. She wanted her daughter to grow up with life skills rather than worrying about material things. She couldn't find anything, so she decided to create her own digital interactive magazine about growth mindset. After going viral, parents wanted a published version, but she didn't have the capacity at the time. During her maternity leave with her third child, she spent time working on ideas for the magazine. When the pandemic hit, she realised what skills her children were lacking from school and saw an opportunity to create School Plus Kids, an online membership with masterclasses that teaches children core life skills.

The School Plus Kids Podcast will cover all of these five pillars in depth, with some episodes being solo and others with guests and thought leaders in the space.
