Psalms of the Summer (Week 1) - Psalm 85 - Canada Day can be a day that is a paradox for many. It is a day when we can genuinely give thanks for our freedom and for the country in which we live. On the other hand, it is hard not to be reminded of parts of our nation’s past where we have participated in oppression and hatred. Psalm 85 is a psalm which acts as a prayer of Israel to God asking that He remember them and restore them as His people. It likewise can be a prayer for us and our nation that we would again be a place of justice and righteousness and know God’s favour and blessing.

What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 10) - Acts 8:26-40 - The story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch displays the fact that Christ has come to bring all people to the Father and that the manner by which He wants to work is in the faithfulness of His servants. Philip is shown as one who listens to the Spirit’s leading and in doing so is used to bring others to Jesus.

So... What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 9) - Acts 8:4-25 - The book of Acts reveals that many of the things that plague the Christian faith today are not new issues. Where the Gospel is proclaimed and the Spirit brings about powerful change there are those who wish to acquire such influence for their own gain. The story of Simon the sorcerer acts as both a warning to be on guard for this as well as a reminder that God’s work in our life is the result of grace and not merit. Therefore we ought to carry ourselves with humility.

So... What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 8) - Acts 6:8-8:3 - The mission of God will eventually bump up against the powers of the world and meet conflict. Here in the story of Stephen we meet the first Christian martyr, whose devotion to the resurrected Jesus is stronger than his fear of death. We meet Saul who will go on to be used by God despite his rocky beginning and the church is scattered beyond Jerusalem as God’s Spirit pushes them further outward.

So... What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 7) - Acts 6:1-7 - As the community of faith expands so does the ongoing needs of its members. We see here the counter-cultural nature of the community being multi-cultural as well as participation in the ministry by more than just the apostles. We are reminded that God is making for Himself one body of all people who He is calling to play their part in His work.

So... What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 6) - Acts 5:12-42 - As the community of faith grows they begin to grow a larger reputation within the city - in spite of their strange ideas around the crucified Jesus, people regard them well and they are a blessing to their neighbours. Unfortunately this is a threat to the religious establishment (even as Jesus had been) and try to stop them. Here we find wisdom coming from one of the Jewish leaders, who counsels the others that if this is not a movement from God it will die out but that if it is, nothing - not even them - could stop it. This is a good reminder that what we do for God in His will has staying power, even when we face obstruction to it.

So... What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 5) - Acts 4:32-5:11 - The account of Ananias and Sapphira is a troubling one but speaks to us of God’s heart for His people to be generous while also revealing the serious nature of hypocrisy and the reminder that we cannot fool God. We mustn’t think that it is ok to carry on how we like and not expect some measure of accountability. This isn’t a passage intended to stir up fear but as a stern reminder of the call to be holy as He is holy. If we are in fact the new Temple of God, this is a vocation we must enter into seriously and with great care.

So... What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 4) - Acts 3-4:31 - The Spirit at work in the people of God will always result in the mission of God being worked out through them. Just as the ministry of Jesus was characterized by bringing wholeness to those He encountered in many ways, so this is evident in the work of the apostles early on in the book of Acts. We are invited to be people who preach the good news of Jesus and help bring wholeness to those that we encounter as well.
