Hallo Alemaal,
Welkom terug.
De aflevering van vandaag is compleet anders.
Today’s episode is completely different
As I mentioned before, I’m pregnant with my second child and since I’m in my third trimester, my body needs extra care and attention
This means that I have to slow down on some things that I do on a day- to- day basis.
One such things is to temporarily stop making podcasts for a while until I get back from my post pregnancy phase.
Tot volgend jaar voor nog meer magie.

Welcome to another episode of our podcast. I hope you're having a great week.

Hello All,
Welcome back to the fifth episode of our podcast. This episode is going to be entirely in English because I'm going to discuss all the tips and tricks that I have used over the course of time to learn Dutch and this is aimed even for absolute beginners to understand.
So first of all, I must say that I'm still not an expert in Dutch language. I'm currently at B1 level. I make lot of faults, my pronunciation goes wrong at times, my sentence structure is incorrect. But that's totally okay. My main aim in building this podcast is to create a platform where I get a chance to speak to you all and that's the most effective way to learn a language. Isn't it?
So, here are some of the practical tips that I used and still use to improve my language skills based on 4 categories.
1. I first logged into Youtube and looked for basic videos that helped me to get started
2. I enrolled in some of the online language learning platforms like Duolingo, Dutchpod101 and started practicing there
These two steps laid foundation for my "listening skill"
3. I then started to read letters, posts and other magazines that came home.
4. I started to keep stock of Ah Allerhande magazines and read them whenever possible.
These two things helped me in building my "reading skill" to some extent
5. I picked few sentences from my daily life and started translating it into Dutch, of course I took help from google translate. However, I must admit that I didn't do it quite often.
This step helps in improving "writing skill" to a great extent
6. Finally comes speaking part. Initially, it is very difficult and daunting to speak. I was reluctant to speak in Dutch, was comfortable speaking in English with others and I took a lot of time to start speaking to others in Dutch.
I mainly concentrated on reading and listening at the beginning. Once I started to get the hang of the language, then I slowly started to speak to people in AH, other stores, parents of other kids etc
One realistic thing to note here is that learning a language is not an easy task specially as adults when we have so many other responsibilities and to-do lists to check every single day. Language learning needs consistent effort, time and patience just like any other skill. It took me 3 years to be able to speak without any hesitation and I still fumble a lot of times. That is totally okay. No one is perfect right. Our leaning curve will not be linear all the time. Some days are super cool, sometimes things don't happen as we wish to. Life comes along the way and we totally skip learning or we tend to procrastinate due to various reasons. All of this is natural human tendency. What is important is to bounce back again and keep going no matter how tiny our progress seem to be
Well, good news is that you are not alone in this language learning journey. We are all together in this process and let's use this platform to leverage our skillset. One most important and non-negotiable thing that you need to do every Wednesday is to listen to this podcast. Apart from that, pick just one thing among all the tips that I have shared in this podcast and keep going at it. Start small and then increase your pace and speed. That way you will save yourself from being overwhelmed.
Dat was het voor deze aflevering. Tot volgende week woensdag. Pas goed op jezelf, doei!
Hallo Allemaal,
I'm Ramya and welcome to the fourth episode of our podcast. Today, we are going to learn some words that appear in the lyrics of a popular Dutch children's song.
Why are we doing this? It is an effective way to improve our vocabulary, which in turn helps us learn the language very easily.
voorkomen = appear/present
woordenschat = vocabulary
verbeteren = to improve
makkelijk = easy
betekenis = meaning
kleuterjuf = preschool teacher
My son used to sing a line "Amerika, Amerika" every night before he slept when he was 3 years old. So I asked his preschool teacher as to what song it was, so that I could also sing along with him. I learnt it now and present to you with its meaning.
It is a well-known nineteenth-century children's song and there are several versions of it.
bekend = well-known
negentiende-eeuws = nineteenth-century
verschillende = several/various
Het liedje gaat als volgt:
Berend Botje ging uit varen
Met zijn bootje naar Zuidlaren
De weg was recht, de weg was krom
Nooit kwam Berend Botje weerom
Een, twee, drie, vier, vijf, zes, zeven
Waar is Berend Botje gebleven?
-------------------
Berend Botje ging uit varen -> Bear's bone went out sailing
Met zijn bootje naar Zuidlaren -> With his boat to Zuidlaren (Zuidlaren is a village in the province of Drenthe in the Northern Netherlands). I'm not sure how much this information is valid.
De weg was recht, de weg was krom -> The road was straight, the road was crooked
Nooit kwam Berend Botje weerom -> Berend Botje never came back
Een, twee, drie, vier, vijf, zes, zeven -> One, two, three, four, five, six, seven
Waar is Berend Botje gebleven? -> Where has Berend Botje gone?
He's not here, he's not there
Hij is naar Amerika. -> He went to America.
Amerika, Amerika
-> One round of your hopsasa!
Amerika, Amerika -> America, America
->Twice around your hopsasa!
->Three times around your hopsasa!
NOTE: In Dutch, "hopsasa" is used when dancing or jumping. It expresses excitement and encouragement similar to saying "let's go!" or "hurray!". The word is derived from "hopsen," meaning "to hop" or "to jump".
Hello All,
I'm Ramya and welcome to the fourth episode of our podcast where I'm discussing again on the same topic: Kids. Since it is a vacation time, I thought this would be an apt topic to discuss about
Today, I bring to you an interesting real-life situation. A few days ago, my son was having a play date with a kid who speaks Dutch. I was naturally having a conversation with both the kids in Dutch. I struggled to find some words along the process. Like "You both should not fight, you need to play together" or "Do not disturb papa, he is working" or "Finish this task, only then jump onto the next one"
So this episode is all about having conversations with kids in Dutch. Come, let us learn together and make use of it in our day-to-day lives.
The conversation goes like this:
SCENE 1:
Kid: Hello..Can I play with him?
Parent: Yes, come in
Do you guys prefer playing outside or at home?
Kids: At home
Parent: Do you want to color or do some activity?
Kids: Coloring
Parent: That's good. Take the coloring pencils from the drawer
SCENE 2:
After 5mins, they jump on to playing a dice game. Parent comes over and says "Finish coloring first, only then play a dice game", "After coloring, tidy up the space"
Parent: Do you guys like to drink or eat something?
Kids in excitement: Yey...We want to eat OR We want to drink
Parent: What do you want? A cookie or a fruit OR What do you want to drink? Orange juice or apple juice.
Kid: Cookie.
Parent: Here you go..
SCENE 3:
They start fighting over the game. Parent comes and says "Do not fight. You must play together"
Parent: Let us do some activities together. Take this book and do some maths. You do first, next is his turn.
Kids get bored and tells parent that they want to go out and play.
Parent: I have set a timer for 10 minutes. Finish this page and leave
After 5 minutes kids say "We are done"
Parent: Okay.Good.I will apply sunscreen first. Carry a hat and a water bottle before you leave. Have you also applied sunscreen?"
He says "No. I will go home, apply and come back again"
Parent: You are small. It is dangerous to cross the road alone. I shall accompany you to your home.
Kids start playing outside in warm summer.
I hope this episode was useful to you too. Do apply these conversations whenever and whenever possible. See you all soon in the next episode on Wednesday. Until then take care, bye.

Hallo Allemaal,
Ouder: Ja, kom binnen
Spelen jullie liever buiten of thuis?
Kinderen: Thuis
Ouder: Oke..Willen jullie kleuren of een activiteit doen?
Kind: Kleuren
Ouder: Dat is goed. Pak de kleurpotloden uit de la
TRANSCRIPT IN HET NEDERLANDS:
Hello allemaal,
Als we onze thuisland bezoeken, zouden kinderen zich prima vermaken (kids would have a lot of fun). Toch?
Bezoeken = to visit
Thuisland = home country
vermaken = to entertain
enorme = huge/ enormous
bezig te houden = to engage or to keep busy
enkele = a few
voorgelezen = read aloud
proberen = to try
achtertuin = backyard
opblaasbaar zwembad = inflatable pool
kopen = to buy
genieten = to enjoy
wateractiviteit = water activity
leuk = fun
gevoel = feeling
zwemles = swimming lessons
Tekenen = drawing
kleuren = coloring
schilderen = painting
huishoudelijke taken = tasks
uitvoeren = perform
levensvaardigheden = life skills
ongeacht = regardless/irrespective
geslacht = gender
Afhankelijk = depending
afdrukken = print
wiskunde = mathematics
wetenschap = science
muziekinstrument = musical instrument
leerzaam = educational

ENGLISH TRANSCRIPT:
Hello all,
I'm Ramya and this is the second episode of our podcast where we speak about kids. It is summer now and vacation has already started or about to start in a few days time.
If we travel back to our home country, kids would have lot of fun. If not, engaging them throughout the day is a huge task for us as parents. Isn't it?
Below are some of the activities that we can try together with our kids at home. These are nothing new, but since it is narrated in Dutch, we could pick up some Dutch words and use them whenever needed.
1. If your home has a backyard, you can buy inflatable pool and engage kids into a water activity. It is fun and a nice feeling to be in water in warm summers
Plus, if your kid hasn't joined swimming classes yet, this could be a good start.
2. Drawing, coloring and painting are one of the best all-time summer activities to engage kids with.
3. Bakin
Episode 1: Caring for the environment
This is the first episode of our podcast where we discuss about how we can care for our environment.
Before proceeding further, we may have a question:
What is caring for the environment and why should we care it?
Our planet earth is million years old and it must stay good for another million years. The future generation must enjoy everything that our planet earth offers us everyday.
It is very important for us to be conscious about the natural resources that we almost always take for granted.
As per the research, our planet has damaged beyond repair in the past 100 years because of the industrial revolution and the invention of plastic.
So it becomes even more important in the current day and age to restore our planet earth as much as possible, to teach our kids to use the resources wisely, keep the surroundings green and clean, minimise the usage of plastic as much as possible etc.
This is the end of today's podcast. Next time I'll talk to you again with an interesting topic. Until then, take care, goodbye.
Dutch
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
bezighouden -- care about
(It must stay good for another million years) De toekomstige generatie (future generation) moet elke dag genieten (enjoy) van alles wat onze planeet aarde ons biedt. (offer = aanbieden).
Ramya.
